View Full Version : Steve Slaton 100 Yards

The Titans have only allowed one player to rush for a hundred or more yards this season, and that man is Steve Slaton.... twice.
100 Yards on 24 attempts, matching the 100 total yards that the Tacks had rushed as a team. ROTY indeed.

Yup.....ROTY! This NEEDS to happen for this young man, he deserves it.

I think you have to win a rookie of the week before you can win a ROTY dont you?

Again, what a freaking steal. On top of that, this looks like it's his 3rd 100+ yd game in a row.

I thought he has won rookie of the week once? Didnt he win after the Jags game?
Oh well. I would say he's rookie #3 realistically. Flacco and Ryan have been great. He's the best rookie running back though. He'd have maybe 200 more yards (or more) if we had started him the first few games

He won't win ROTY, but he should. Still, next year he can play for MVP. Just imagine what he could do with a chip on his shoulder.

I just hope the coaches are smart enough to vote him to the pro-bowl. slaton is a beast

While it is very unlikely that the ROTY award will go to anybody besides Matt Ryan, Slaton has been more than impressive as a rookie. I meant to focus more on the fact that not another player has rushed for 100+ yards against the Titans, and this kid has done it twice.
This game was nothing short of what I expected it to be, a hard fought contest that came down to the very last possession. It doesn't quite make up for the 0-4 start, but it helps a great deal.
Didn't the Packers end their 2006 season on a 6 game win streak before making it to the NFC Championship game in 2007?

Why not? He rushed for more than Forte and Johnson this week, really closing that gap.

It will probably be Ryan or Flacco. First of all, QB's are always going to get more attention. Also, the Ravens, Titans, Falcons and Bears (to a lesser extent) are all in the playoffs or at least in the hunt. That does matter. It means you get more stage time. It is that simple.
No player has really played as hard as Slaton, but he is under the radar.

I'm not so sure about being under the radar. We're not in the playoffs but the media is still talking about him more than Forte and Johnson each week lately.

Maybe over Forte and Johnson but don't ignore Flacco and Ryan. QB is the glamour position and making the playoffs does matter. Unbelievable numbers would matter too but all in all, it's probably going to one of the QB's this year. IMO it will be Ryan

Regardless of ROY award honors that I think will go to Matty Ice and Flacco as AFC ROY, Slaton still has a very good shot of passing Johnson and Forte to become leading rookie rusher is a year of great rookie RBs.
Through 14 games:
Johnson:1159
Forte: 1149
Slaton: 1124
Slaton has to makeuo for 35 yards in 2 weeks which means averaging 17.5 yards more over the last two games than Johnson 12.5 more than Forte...thats very doable. He had 35 more than Johnson today and 64 more than Forte

It might be considered a dubious honor if they rest Johnson in the final week, but heck... I'll take it!

You are correct. I think it will probably be Ryan as well. His story is just too compelling. It is hard not to root for the guy. He came into Atlanta after the Michael Vick disaster, had to earn the respect of the fans the hardway, and has taken a very bad team to within a hair of playoffs.
The upside to fantasy football is that it can bring good players on bad teams to the attention of a wider audience. That will help Slaton. I guarantee he will be one of the first 5-10 guys off the fanstasy draft boards next year. Since we are going up against the pitiful NFC West next season, he should have a monster year.
You know what made today's 100 extra special? The number of times he was wrapped up at the line of scrimmage and, with the help of the OL, pushing the pile forward for nice yardage gains. I think on one of them I actually saw what looked like one of our own lineman tackling him, except he was pulling him through the pile, hehe.

Going from those moments when he was seemingly carrying the Titan's LB's and Linemen for extra yards, I was shocked when I saw one of their corners making a solid tackle on this kid for little gain.
Week in and week out I've been impressed with Slaton's presence and patience in the running game, just waiting to break one. Prior to his 30+ yard run, I was happy enough with his performance just because of the heart, power, and determination it took for him to gain those few extra yards and first downs.

One play, Winston was pulling him, backpedaling, about 3 yards

My other favorite play involving Winston was the final run for a first down, Winston's upfield block took out three potential tacklers.

I'm not sure about the packers, but the dolphins ended their season in 2006 with a 6 game winning streak, then, 2007 happened. Let's hope the pendulum swings the other way.

What made it special to me was when he got the 3rd and 8 at the end, then just took a knee. That was so disrespectful to the Titans...I loved it.

i dont necessarily agree that it was disrespectful - just a heads up play. Slaton is wise beyond his years. he eliminated any risk of fumbling the ball and kneeled down - like westbrook last year on the one. didnt need anything but the first down and that sealed the game. even last week, a lot of young rbs would have kept running but slaton knew where we were in the game, on the field and ran out of bounds to save enough time to kick a fg.
to correct one of the stat lines earlier - slaton is now second among rookie rbs with 1124, 35 yds behind johnson at 1159. forte has 1115. johnson plays a stout pittsburgh defense while we play a lack-luster oakland run d. and we'll be head to head with forte in week 17.
slaton should surpass johnson next week and hold on to the rookie rushing title and at least in the conversation for rookie of the year. the only thing that could sway the vote is slaton was a third round pick and you cant ignore what he has accomplished versus the 10 rbs taken before him.

he did the same thing last week and basically won the game for us. he ran out of bounds with 3 seconds left in the gb game even tho he had a good 5 yards ahead but he ran out of bounds insted of potentially getting tackled and having the clock run out

He may not make ROTY, but he sure should make SOTY (steal of the year). Pretty good for a player that was only a third down back that might make some yardage if he got the ball in the open field. Wonder if any of those media guys that were knocking us for picking him are paying attention. Probably not... they are problaby still worried about saving face for knocking us on the Mario pick.
Even if the Front Office drafts my dead granny to play DE next year I won't critisize them for it.

Man Slaton is a bad man, you guys stole him in the draft. I think ROTY is between him and Ryan but I think since you guys wont make the playoffs it will hurt his chances. How smart do you guys look now not drafting Reggie Bush a few years ago? You got a monster DE and still got your money Tailback at a great price.

It is awesome how things turned out. Id take Slaton over Bush any day. I have yet to see Bush carry a pile of TITANS linemen and still get the first. This guy is a little monster!!!.

Slaton is everything Reggie was advertised to be. We got a Slaton on a budget instead of having to pay Reggie out the nose to feed him and his ugly girlfriend.

Slaton has really earned his place as one of the top rookies (period) this year and there have been a lot of great rookies in this last draft. A lot of his runs are far more physical then you'd expect a RB of his size to handle. Ten running backs were taken ahead of him in the draft and only one barely surpass him in rushing yards. Slaton is a God-send to the Houston offense.
I personally think Flacco should probably get it, he was originally not even supposed to play until min-season but Troy Smith who won the job was ill and Flacco had to start the season and then has done a pretty tremendous job. I personally still hate the Ravens for what they did to us but you can't deny they have a talented and skilled QB right now.

I loved it when Slaton to a wallop of a hit about two yards past the line of scrimmage and then he kept going for about 7-8 more yards.
His two runs at the end of the game is that Barry Sanders type running I'm talking about. Only averaging 2 ypc and then BOOM, 40 yard run!
However the one thing that I love about this kid is the past 3 weeks he has done something that basically put the team on his shoulders and sealed the deal for us to win the game. We've never had that guy. Sure, we've had Andre but you can't do that with a receiver at the end of the game. Slaton gives us that other dimension to help us seal wins.

What are you talking about? you must not have been watching in the Stacey Mack "truck" days when we were dominating teams with our rushing attack.
seriously though, how good slaton has been gives us more and more reason to go out and get a serious compliment back to take some of the bruising for him. Imagine if barry sanders had a brandon jacobs or lendale white to go with him. Its a different league these days.
It's amazing to me how Slaton gets stronger and stronger as the game goes on. It does make me nervous though to see him getting 20+ carries a game.

Lets hope that Steve can make the Pro Bowl this year. I am glad that we have a great, young running back. Now, we just need a big bruiser to share the workload with Steve to prolong his NFL career.

In understand the team calls him SLEEPY which is pretty cool: Sleepy Slaton.
I noticed though that Mark Vandermeer took a page out of my book yesterday and used SPEED Slaton there at the end of the game. Personnally, after the hits he took throughout yesterday's game, I think Steve STATEMENT would have been more appropriate.
I'd say its:
Steve Statement, when he gets us a first down on third and long, or
Speed Slaton, when he turns a short screen into 40 yard touchdown scamper.
Although yesterday (except for that fumble) he was Cheese Gratin' Slaton.
As an aside, until our last set of downs, it looked to me like we got away from the run in the second half, and it seemed to hurt our offense on the whole. I was actually worried at one point that it was because Slaton got knicked or something, but fortunately he still had the limber legs at the end of the game.

If you look at this 4 game win streak you can see where Steve Slaton has only gotten stronger for us in the 4th quarter. Can you imagine a fresh Steve Slaton in the 4th quarter after a bigger bruising back is there to pound the rock for us? Get this guy a complimentary back and you will see us kneeling the ball alot more at the end of games.
