Georgia senior cornerback Paul Oliver has has been declared academically ineligible for the 2007 season and plans to petition the NFL for entry into the supplemental draft this summer. Oliver started 15 games in his career and was fifth on the team with 57 tackles and had three interceptions last season. His stock rose after shutting down Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson in the season finale last season. Johnson had only two catches for 13 yards in the Bulldogs' 15-12 victory.

he applied to the advisory committee for early placement in the NFL draft but did'nt even get a 3rd rd. grade. the Texans drafted Fred Bennett in the 4th rd. & he is a better prospect. so maybe some team in Detroits division would use a 4th but I would be hard pressed to give up a 5th. in the supplemental draft.

Do we have any picks in the supplemental draft? If so, how many?
If I remember correctly, the supplemental draft is kind of like an auction. Teams bid a draft pick for the right to pick a certain player, and whichever team has the highest pick gets the rights to that player, and then forfeits that pick in the next draft. Wikipedia has a pretty good overview of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Draft#Supplemental_Draft

here's some stats
6'0 208lbs
57 tackles-46 solo
3 INT
6 PBU
6.5 TFL
2 Sacks
Seems like he's not a big playmaker against the pass, but handles the run well and can be used on corner blitzes.

the kid has talent...some draft websites have him as the number 2 corner in next years draft right behind cason...what does that say...nada darn thing...at this point last year marcus mccauley was supposed to be the number one corner in the draft and he fell to what round 3 or 4...this kid is probably worth a 6th round pick right now...maybe a 5th...maybe...do we need him...i would say not at this point...because he's not going to be any better than bennett...probably not any better than alexander, wynn, or hutchins...so i pass

I don't know if I like the idea of FORFEITING draft picks just to get a player in the supplemental draft. But you never know, you could find a great player in the supplemental draft. Wasn't Steve Young or Warren Moon a supplemental player?

What's so strange about it? It's basically like spending your draft pick almost a year early. I guess you can't later use it for trade purposes, but you only give up what you bid for a player (if you win the bidding).

Although prior supplemental draft picks didn't pan out (Milford Brown & Tony Hollings)...I would be interested to see if this kid could be worth a pick. Unless we have our eyes on a possible June 1st cut that we could add for our other starting CB, we might want to look into this guy.
Has anyone seen him play and has thoughts on his ability?
I know he held Calvin Johnson to 2 catches for 13 yards last year...but then again, how much of that was due to Calvin's QB?

I would pass on a lot of these players, academically ineligible I think that to me can come back in the form of a character issue later. You want smart guys on the football field not just gifted athletes. I wouldn't risk it on a corner who has all of 1 claim to fame.

Nope I don't agree with putting players who can't keep good grades in classes designed to keep them playing football. If you cant pass the Collegiate equivalent of P.E, you shouldn't think of opting for the NFL.

Warren Moon was a FA from the CFL. Steve Young had been in the USFL and the NFL had a special Supplemental Draft for defecting players from the faltering league. Not a true supplemental type pick as it is used now. http://www.oursportscentral.com/usfl/draftsup.htm
Bernie Kosar was a supplemental pick that succeeded, as was Chris Carter, but he had a false start and a drug problem that todays rules would have changed his career.

Yes but wasn't Bernie's Reason because of a certain Vincent Testaverde was going to be the starter for Miami? Not due to his grades,

I don't see us using picks to get players unless we are actually picking that player in the draft. That said, I think we will only go for June cuts where the player has some experience playing at this level.

Ummmmmm........that's kinda what "June 1st" cuts are referring to. Typically it's league vets with a cap number considered too high for their current team to justify paying. That does not apply to guys without "experience playing at this level".

Well, no wonder he nearly shut down Calvin Johnson two years ago. [:P]

Wonder if I could've 10 years ago? [:)]

HJam.....sorry...but read back a few posts. It appears you're lost. Oliver isn't a 2nd year player. He is the player referenced as a possibility to be drafted during this year's Supplemental draft. He is currently a Junior at Georgia, but no longer eligible for 2007's academic year. The game where he shut down Calvin Johnson was not 2 years ago...it was November 25th, 2006.

Not very impressive if you ask me, I really don't think he is worth it after looking at these numbers.
Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver conducted a personal workout for 27 NFL teams Wednesday. He was reportedly clocked between 4.5 and 4.58 seconds in the 40-yard dash and registered a 33 1/2 vertical leap. Oliver has already set up meetings with the Falcons (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/1) and Chargers (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/24) and is considered a potential third-round draft pick

Yeah, I thought he was supposed to have 4.32 speed? Not worth losing our 3rd round pick over. The highest we should bid for this kid would be like a 5 or 6 rd, and if hes going in the 3rd then it doesnt matter anyway. 4.58 is very slow for a corner. Hes not even as fast as Big Walt

In Oliver's defense, he did only have 2-1/2 weeks to prepare for this. Most people who prepare for the combine get 3 months or longer. My point being that he ran a 4.5/40 out of shape. He was under the impression that he would be returning to college football and just now starting to get into shape for the upcoming season. He just learned a couple weeks ago that he would not have the opportunity to play ball at the college level next year. In shape, he may very well run a 4.3/40. And the Big Walt comment is ridiculous. Big Walt, supposedly, ran a 4.9/40. Which is fast for a defensive tackle, but is sure as hell not faster that a 4.5. The main difference is Oliver can run a 4.5/40 out of shape all day long, while Walt can run a 4.9/40 but will pass out from exhaustion when he hits the 40 yard mark. LOL. Oliver's 40 time is much faster than he ran this past week.

Yes but wasn't Bernie's Reason because of a certain Vincent Testaverde was going to be the starter for Miami? Not due to his grades,
Kosar graduated early, and yes Kelly and Testaverde shorten his college career. I don't think it hurt him to much.
