I am a fan of NFL players from my college (Wisconsin) and am a member of a number of boards but only read this one and had not registered until now, but I have a question that doesn't seem to be in threads that I can find already on the board.

Owen Daniels is a RFA this year. What do you folks see happning? Will he be tendered (if so, what level would you expect?) or will they work out a real contract.

What level tender do you guys see him as rating? (I admit to a little prejudice in his favor :) )

High tender and work on an extension.

my guess would be a quick extension with no real drama. We're a very vanilla front office (in a good way most of the time). This might be the first year we even consider using the franchise tag. I guess we haven't ever had the threat of real talent getting away before since there didnt used to be any talent.

So, which NFL team do you work for and do you really think you can get Owen Daniels from us?

LOL...I am just kidding. He is valuable to us, and I would think the FO would do what is necessary to keep him in a Texans uni.

I doubt any team would really even try to sign Owen. The Texans have shown over the past few season that he is going to be utilized very often. If a team were to offer him a contract, the Texans would surely match it. I am not an expert on how RFA works and what draft pick we would get if he got away but unless it was a high first rounder, he will be here. My belief is that the Texans will go ahead and negotiate a long term deal for him. We have a lot of cap room and will be looking to lock a number of players up with it (including Dunta and Demeco).

On a side not, what Badgers should we look out for in the draft. You guys always have great RB's and I believe you have a solid DE coming out too.

Owen Daniels will be tendered at $1.85 million, 1st RD draft pick or $2.35 million 1st and 3rd RD draft picks. If he doesn't sign an extension before being tendered.

Thanks for the info. You always seem to know your stuff Texian.

There are four tender levels:
On 2008 numbers, the tender and compensation were as follows:

$2.562 mil - 1st and 3rd picks
$2.017 mil - 1st
$1.417 mil - 2nd
$927 k - same round as original draft pick

Teams can negotiate and sign offer sheets with RFA's. The original team then has seven days to match the offer sheet. If they do not match, they receive the draft pick contribution above.

Owen Daniels will be tendered at $1.85 million, 1st RD draft pick or $2.35 million 1st and 3rd RD draft picks. If he doesn't sign an extension before being tendered.

The numbers have gone up from that.

Thanks folks...I see the Texans as a team definitely on the rise (though I have to say I am not exactly thrilled with your QB situation) and I am happy that OD seems to be appreciated.

As far as Badgers coming out this year...from your point of view, our best guy is a position you don't need much. Travis Beckum is OD's successor at TE and actually had a better college career with 2 seasons over 900 yards before going out this season with a broken leg. Interestingly enough, he was originally recruited as a top HS DE/OLB prospect and played OLB for us in '05. With OD gone the next year he switched to TE and immediately played like that was his position all along.

There is a rumor going about that Jr. RB PJ Hill is considering going out early...it's extremely rare though for a Badger player not to play his full eligibility, but to be honest the prospects for next year may not be appealing. PJ has been an excellent RB, but I have reached the point after Ron Dayne, Michael Bennett and Brian Calhoun that I don't try and project what our RBs will do in the NFL. It seems our receivers and linemen are the only good bets... odd for a team that lives and dies by the run.

Remember Leach, Texans vs. Giants.

Sure. Is there a point I am missing?

No, just pointing it out to those who don't know.
