Honestly I've never heard anything impressive about the Buffalo Bills' defensive line so I have no idea who he is.

Edit: On another note Jethro Franklin was hired by USC apparently so congrats to him on landing the job.

His 3 years in Buffalo have had 40, 26 & 24 team sacks. Don't like that the numbers have been going down but I think that has been due (in part) to player personell changes and injuries.

the more i read about this guy the more excited i get. the Texans are fortunate to have gotten Collar. his style seems to fit Frank Bush's to a T. If someone can get more production out of Okoye, i think its Collar...

I think a big (effective) run stuffing NT would help get more production out of Okoye as well.

This is why i have written in the draft section that we might should draft B. J. Raji.

Btw Welcome Bill Kollar.

That decline could have to do with personnel changes on the line, but also in the secondary. Nate clemmens left 2 years ago, and the only other DB i know of theirs is Terrence McGee. Clemmens left some big shoes to fill, even if you think he did get overpaid by SanFran.

A good perspective from Lance Zierlein.

Bill Kollar: He's what's for defense

If you are wondering what to expect from the Texans new defensive line coach, then wonder no more. He wants his defensive line attacking and getting up the field. Read and react? Give me a break.

Bill Kollar coached under defensive coordinator Lovie Smith in St. Louis and under defensive coordinator Perry Fewell in Buffalo. Fewell coached under Lovie Smith in Chicago and Lovie is from the Tony Dungy school of defense. What does that all mean?

Bill Kollar's defensive lines are going to shoot the gaps, play with a tremendous motor and do everything in their power to disrupt without having to run twists all day. Look for the Texans to upgrade that defensive line somewhat because they aren't exactly built for Kollar's style of coaching just yet. A new defensive end with speed could change all of that.

Kollar's hiring also signals to me that you can throw out the idea that the Texans will be looking for a great big space eater at NT. That isn't going to happen. In fact, guys like "Ziggy" Hood or B.J. Raji would be the type of guys the Texans would look at on the interior and Paul Kruger or Everette Brown would be who they might look for at DE. This isn't Kollar's defense, but his background is explosive edge DEs and high motor DTs.

Sounds like a nice hire. Aggressive, upfield attack. Exactly what Bush said he wants to do.

Many will disagree , but i have no problem with Raji at 15. If we go that route a free agent on the defensive side is a must.

I DO like this part of the chronic article though:

In 19 consecutive seasons as the line coach with the Falcons, Rams and Bills, Kollar has worked for defenses that averaged 37½ sacks. The Texans had 25 sacks last season, and they've averaged 28 in Gary Kubiak's three seasons as coach.

I'm not sure what other teams average, but HIS teams have averaged more sacks than OUR team. Not that sacks are the end-all be-all, but it'd be nice to improve in that area.

I also like the talk of his "aggressive" style for our line!

Did you see the Vanderbilt game? He wasn't even in the game during critical points. And when he was in, he didn't do anything special. There's no doubt he has his great moments, but I seriously question his motor. It's Travis Johnson-esque.

Alex Gibbs is Assistant Head Coach Offense and this guy will be Assistant Head Coach Defense. Just games with no substance.

I'll take the 37.5 sacks. is at least 2 a game. I'll take that in a second.

With 2 sacks a game, I wonder how many knockdowns and the like are caused.

The NFL frowns upon teams bringing over coaches in lateral moves that are still under contract. I'm not sure if there are any actualy penalties to pay, but they will add the "Assistant Head Coach" title with whatever their coaching job is to avoid any interference.

The best thing I heard about him, is that he will have the defensive line shooting the gaps rather then running those awful x stunts that never worked. Those stunts slowed the linemen down and gave the offensive line an advantage.

That's like music to my ears. The key is to put your defensive linemen in 'almost unblockable' positions when they fire off the ball.

I think we are looing at a good [ick up. Kollar is a known commodity. I like how Kubes has been able to bring these types in. Gibbs is a legend as far as O-Line goes and you can see how improved the offensive line was just after one season. They will get even better this year I imagine. Reading about our D-Line shooting gaps and being aggressive makes me look forward to football season even more. I think with the line we have we might be built for a more attacking line. Mark my words, Amobi will have a break out year. Heck we might even finally see something out of Travis Johnson. This will in turn make the 2nd and 3rd levels become more effective. Alright, I better lay off the Battle Red Kool-Aid.

I was reading lance's article and got goose bumps when i read this.....

"So, mano a mano, does Kollar's d-line beat Larry Zierlein's o-line? Ha, congrats to your dad."
(Lance Z)
"His Bills line is the kind of line that would give this year's Steeler's line trouble because they have such high-motor DEs."

If he can do for our D line what alex gibbs did for our O line the AFC South is ours baby

I like the idea of an attacking D-Line. I think DE will be our first selection to pair with Mario. I actually like the Brace guy from BC better than Raji if we go DL on 1st pick. In BC's bowl game Brace was everywhere and Raji was non existent.
As far as O-Line and their improvement. I think you have to give Matt Schaub and Steve Slaton some congrats. Schaub for getting the ball out of his hands to the playmakers early and Slaton for hitting the holes quicker than our previous backs. Since our O-Line had trouble sustaining blocks in previous years the speed in the backfeild has helped them improve as well as Gibbs Coaching.

I love how everything is lining up for our defense now having said that i think Everette Brown would be a perfect fit for what we are trying to do on defense...And teaming him up with Mario coming around the other side and amobi shooting through the middle Peyton Will freakin soak his trousers. I think this guy can come in and start for us he kinda reminds me of Mario in college.

Wow! I never realized how fast this guy's acceleration was. He may need to beef up a bit so he can handle every down better. What's his current draft status?

if Brown is a natural RE, then Mario might move to his native LE position if that were to happen.

Screw this native position s#$--stuff that has folks wanting to move Demeco and stick Mario in one spot. Leave him doing what he is doing which is deciding where he wants to be. Mario is talented and versatile enough to decide which side he wants and until someone steps up to have a defined role for himself, Mario gets to define the role for them both. Even then, swapping is probably a good idea to counter rhythm and get the OL off.

Exactly what im thinking.Mario playing both sides in his rookie year, is paying huge dividends now. E. Brown to me is some1 who can also handle moving between ends & also be very effective. This guy is also very stout against the run, too!!!
