View Full Version : Question on D-Rob
I hope he doesnt.. but
If he leaves... do we?
1. Get anything for him via picks (meaning, the picks the NFL give you for losing certain players, cant remember the name but teams get extra picks)
2. Franchise him to keep him a extra year (If we can, not sure of the rules for that either)?

If we franchise him and he leave yes we get draft picks, two first, so realistically we don't want to franchise him as nobody would give up 2 first for him IMO I hope we make him a fair offer and nobody else goes crazy making him a ridiculous offer, we have to be competitive, but not necessarily the highest, I'm sure he would accept a lesser offer to be here than leave, but not too much less, hey we do have the income tax advantage (no state income tax on half his pay)

Do we get anything from the NFL for lost players.. I have seen some teams pick up 2nd-7ths for lost players.. but I admit I dont know the circumstances.

I don't have a clue on how compensatory picks work, but yes i do beleive you get them since D-rob was a first round pick we would get the highest amount as a compensatory pick, but as I said I don't have a clue how it works, just that it has something to do with Free agents.

I could be wrong but I think the compensatory picks only work from restricted free agents. And those picks are awarded by the NFL not someone elses picks and they are almost always in rounds 4-6

Zanth Which statement are you saying "WHAT" to. If we franchise Dunta and somebody signs him we get two first round picks. And since we play half our games in Texas half his salary is not subject to state income tax as there is none in Texas, actually guys would get 9/16 of the salary tax free as Florida doesn't have state income tax either. If we make a 7 mill per year offer for Dunta I bet he leaves for 9 but not 8. JMHO

Actually, compensatory picks are awarded for unrestricted free agents, like Dunta - but they aren't awarded until a year later. Compensatory picks are added on to the ends of rounds 3-7, and teams get these picks when they lost more free agents than they gained in free agency during the previous year. For example, partly because we signed Ahman Green as a UFA in 2007, the Packers got a compensatory draft pick in 2008.
The placement of compensatory picks depends on the UFA's salary, playing time and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. Teams can get up to four compensatory picks in a single draft, and the picks are awarded at the NFL annual meeting in late March.
For restricted free agents, like Owen Daniels, a team is compensated with the actual draft pick of another team based on how the RFA was tendered. So, if we tender O.D. at a first round level and he signs with another team, we would get their first round pick.

So its kinda like going nil in spades. If you can make it through with out getting any and let every one else pick them up, you can actually end up getting more (potentially).
