View Full Version : My 2009 Mock (Verison 1)

1. Detroit Lions – Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest
In most mocks, you will see Stafford or Andre Smith here, but allow me to explain myself. Over the past decade, Detroit has made blunder after blunder trying to piece together a competitive team. Now that Millen is out, the last thing the new GM wants to do is make a mistake with his first ever draft pick. Couple that with the fact that the Lions have hired a former defensive coordinator for their head coach, and you have the recipe for a nice, safe, defensive pick here. Curry is one of the few (there might be 2) “can’t miss” picks in this draft. He has prototypical size, amazing athletic ability and he started 3 years for Wake without missing any time due to injury. Ideally, Detroit would like to trade down here, but it will be extremely difficult to find any takers.

2. St. Louis Rams – Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
The Rams allowed 45 sacks last season. Crabtree is a tempting pick here, but you can’t throw the ball if Marc Bulger is on the turf. Andre Brown has been a dominate lineman since high school, so there’s no reason to think he can’t handle the NFL.

3. Kansas City Chiefs – Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
With Aaron Curry off the board and the Chiefs making Arizona’s former offensive coordinator the new “Chief”, something tells me they will want to address the quarterback situation quickly so that the new coach and Stafford can take their lumps and grow together within the organization.
Note: With former Patriots GM Scott Pioli in charge in KC now, a bid for Matt Cassel is a possibility that could change the outlook of this draft.

4. Seattle Seahawks – Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
If they were to have a camera on Matt Hasselbeck after this pick is made, you’d probably be watching him pop open a bottle of champagne. After struggling with mediocre receivers for years now, the ‘Hawks finally get him a legitimate threat to fire to. Enjoy Matt…enjoy.

5. Cleveland Browns – Aaron Maybin, OLB/DE, Penn State
The Browns need help on defense and Maybin fits nicely into their 3-4 scheme as a pass-rushing outside linebacker. Chris Wells is also a possibility here, but with Mangini being a defensive-minded coach and the likelihood of some good backs falling into the later rounds, I think they will address the defense first.

6. Cincinnati Bengals – B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
The Bengals need offensive line help pretty badly, but Raji’s stock is soaring right now and he is way too intriguing to pass on here. Besides, their run defense was horrible last year and that all starts up front.

7. Oakland Raiders – Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
Now that they have a new horse in the stable, they need to make room for him to gallop. McFadden has loads of potential just waiting to be unleashed, but he can’t go anywhere without an offensive line in front of him.
Note: If they let Asomugha go this off-season, this pick could very well be spent on a CB (Jenkins) to replace him.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
David Garrard was on his back more than Jenna Jameson last year, and the Jags will look to remedy this situation in order to find out if he really is the long-term solution at quarterback. Smith has the quickest feet of all of the OT prospects in this draft and his stock is rising quickly.

9. Green Bay Packers - Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
The Packers would have liked Raji here to plug up the middle in that new 3-4 alignment they will most likely be running, but with him off the board I believe they will look to sure up their aging secondary. Jenkins is a very promising corner and almost a steal with the 9th overall pick.

10. San Francisco 49ers – Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
Mark Sanchez would be the trendy pick here (California kid from the big-time, pro-like school), but I just don’t see the 49ers taking a chance on another first round quarterback just yet, especially in what is a very shallow group of them this year. I’ve read that Alex Smith is willing to be a team player and take a pay cut and we all know how much Mike Singletary likes team players. I believe he will give him one more chance to prove himself with another weapon on offense to go to besides Frank Gore.

11. Buffalo Bills – Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas
The Bills are in need of another defensive end opposite the aging Schobel to help get pressure on the opposing quarterback and Orakpo is the guy. He has been one of the most dominate pass-rushers in college football and should slide nicely right into the 4-3 scheme played in Buffalo.

12. Denver Broncos – Rey Maualuga, LB, USC
This is a no-brainer for new Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels. They had one of the most abysmal defenses in the league last year and guess what, Maualuga lead one of the greatest defenses in the history of college football. Insert a guy like that on defense, along with a new coordinator and let’s see what happens…

13. Washington Redskins – Brian Cushing, LB, USC
Let the run on USC guys begin. The ‘Skins are aging on defense and need help at outside linebacker, and Cushing has helped himself immensely during workouts in the past month.

14. New Orleans Saints – Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
We know the offense is ok, but the Saints had some of the worst corners in the league last year and desperately need help in the defensive backfield. Davis is a very solid player and a great pick-up at 14.

15. Houston Texans – Everett Brown, DE, Florida State
Everyone got to see what Houston’s offense is capable of last season. Now the defense has step up if they are going to take the next step in the Bayou City. An end like Brown opposite Mario Williams will surely create havoc in any opposing team’s backfield, and when you play Peyton Manning twice a year, that’s a welcome addition.

16. San Diego Chargers – Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State
With LT hurt all the time, and Sproles leaving due to free agency, it’s time to draft a running back to take some carries. We’ve seen the two-back system work wonders in many other organizations, why not San Diego? Say hello to the LT-Beanie one-two punch.

17. New York Jets – D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt
You can bet that with Rex Ryan moving in as head coach, his fist priority will be to strengthen that secondary. WR is an option, but the guys they have are decent enough for now.

18. Chicago Bears – Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
They finally figured out who will be the signal caller in Chicago, now they need a few targets for him to throw to. Enter Percy Harvin…

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
It happens every year…a highly touted quarterback falls in the first round. This year the award goes to Mark Sanchez. If he makes it here, the Bucs will surely grab him. Without John Gruden running the show, the quarterback carousel can finally rest in Tampa.

20. Detroit Lions – Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss
The defense was addressed first, and with Oher still on the board here, it’s a good opportunity to address another huge need for Detroit, the awful o-line.

21. Philadelphia Eagles – Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
This is pretty simple. The Eagles need a defensive end and Jackson is the best one left on the board here.

22. Minnesota Vikings – Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan
When Taylor Mays decided to remain one of the BMOC’s at USC Delmas’ stock shot up. With his work at the Senior Bowl, Delmas proved that he was the best safety in this year’s draft.

23. New England Patriots – Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
The Offense is set in New England, but the defense is aging. After losing Samuel last year to Philly, the Pats still need some help in the secondary here.

24. Atlanta Falcons – Clay Matthews, OLB, USC
With Ryan and Turner settling in nicely on offense, they have to address the defense with their first round pick. Peria Jerry is also a possibility here, but Matthew’s is a top-flight OLB and he fits the bill.

25. Miami Dolphins – Larry English, OLB/DE, Northern Illinois
Looking at Bill Parcels’ history of drafting these type of linebackers early in the draft and their need for help on defense, it is a pretty sure bet that English will be their guy if he is available here.

26. Baltimore Ravens – James Laurinitis, LB, Ohio State
Somehow I just don’t see the Ravens having the funds to pay Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis and Bart Scott. I see blue and silver in Lewis’ future, and I don’t mean Detroit…

27. Indianapolis Colts – Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss
This is a huge need for the Colts, and they would be thrilled to see Jerry fall to them in this spot. The truth, though, is that a trade up to grab him before the Colts pick is likely. For now though, lets assume there are no trades.

28. Philadelphia Eagles – Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
With Grisham staying in Norman, Pettigrew becomes the best TE available in this year’s draft. I’m sure Donovan won’t mind the extra target considering he’s had to deal with mediocre receivers his whole career.

29. New York Giants – Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina
With Plaxico shooting himself (*****), the Giants will need help at WR. Assuming that they don’t score an Anquan Boldin or T.J. Houzamazilly, expect to see them address the need early in the draft.

30. Tennessee Titans – Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
The defense is solid and if Vince Young is going to get his mind right he’ll need some help at wide receiver.

31. Arizona Cardinals – Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
With Edge complaining and Hightower falling off through the last few weeks of the season, the Cardinals will need a new running back to bolster their backfield. If Moreno falls, he should be their guy here.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers – Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma
The offensive line in Pittsburgh is about the only aspect of the team that is, well, offensive. Big Ben is great at throwing on the run, but a better line will help both Roethlisberger and Parker stay on the field longer.

prolly the best mock i have seen so far. but if mark sanchez is available @ 15, i say we take him and say bye to sage rosenfels. he would be better value @ 15 than everette brown. worst case scenario, we use mark sanchez as trade bait.

What???? You want to draft a guy in the first to be a backup? Teams don't draft players in the first round to have trade bait either. If he were to fall to 15, we would have trade bait to trade that pick but that is it. If he were to fall to 15 I would attempt to trade back with a team like the Jets (Farve announced his retirement today) and see if we can't trade back in the first and pick up possibly a second as well. In this draft though, with E. Brown available, I don't know if I could pass on him.

I actually don't know if the Jets would be our best trade-down partner in this scenario. They draft at 17 only two spots behind us and San Diego's Phillip Rivers pretty much guarantees that unless someone else trades up, Sanchez would be there for them at their original draft spot.

Tampa Bay and Detroit on the other hand are two teams that are a couple more spots behind the Jets that may be interested in playing leap frog. I know the Bucs just signed McCown to an extension, but I think QB is still probably one of the biggest question marks on their team, so they might be willing to roll the dice with Sanchez here. I feel like I don't even have to offer an explanation for why Detroit would need to take Sanchez, but here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVVzLQvmt_g

Minnesota may even be interested.. at least I would be if I were them and Gus Frerotte was my quarterback..

I hope he slips and we can trade with Detroit at 20/21 (from Dallas) I wouldn't even require an extra pick, just swap 2nd,3rd and 4th rounders with us, we would get some 45 picks over the 3 to move back 5 in the first. there is some great talent that will be drafted just in front of us in that 2nd round, would like to be in that 33-38 range

if no team is willing to trade with us for this pick if sanchez is available, i would take him with the 15th pick. imo, sanchez is the #1 QB in this draft and could very well be worth the #1 overall pick. he played in a pro style offense in college just like matt ryan and would be able a great fit for our play action offense. he is more mobile than schaub and looks to be tougher, not to mention that he has a live arm. if we pick him, we can trade sage rosenfels to the vikes for a 5th rnd pick. matt schuab has shown he has problems staying healthy and the competition at QB will make both players better. the eagles drafted kevin kolb with a high 2nd rnd pick to back up mcnabb, and the 49ers traded for steve young, a 1st rnd pick for the buccaneers for a 2nd and a 4th round pick to back up joe montana and in return, they became arguably the best team of that decade. no offense to everette brown, but i we would get more value for the 15th pick if we took sanchez. we can pick a DE like robert ayers or tyson jackson in the 2nd rnd, or try to get peppers or suggs through free agency but QB's like sanchez don't come around too often....think about it.

The Eagles drafted Kolb because they were looking to get rid of McNabb in the very near future. The 49ers traded for Young to come in for Montana when he left. Shaub is still young and showed great promise down the stretch. Sanchez may be the best qb in this draft but this is a weak draft for qb's imo. Sanchez doesn't have all the throws. You also have to consider that he played at a school where they were better than their opponents at every position. Wait until he goes to the nfl and everyone is on the same playing field.

I like that mock draft a lot better than others I've seen. Even as much as I hate to have another 1st rounder on the D line I'd take Everette Brown with open arms. Look at what the Giants did two years ago.

joe montana was still the starting QB for the niners when steve young was brought in and the greenbay packers drafted aaron rodgers in the first round to be the backup QB and brett favre's successor. schaub did show some promise but he also showed he is injury prone and sanchez can make all the throws.

Carson Palmer also had more than 16 starts in college and USC wasn't the power that they are now until his senior year. Palmer also other than a season or two hasn't really done much. Granted he was injured but he is coming close to receiving that bust label.

As far as Rodgers and Young, they were both qb's brought in to be eventual successors to the OLDER starters that were soon to RETIRE or LEAVE. Schaub is young and likely to be the starter for a long time. Granted he is possibly injury prone but his injury last season was legit, anybody would have been hurt by that. Your talking about causing an immediate QB controversy and also failing to fulfill our many defensive needs for a QB that many experts have rated in the 10-20 range of a weak draft class. Remember, David Carr and Joey Harrington were also the top QB's of their draft. Teams will take first round qb's whether they have talent or not, the Texans do not need to do that.

I think that Detroit really really really does not want to pick a qb number one, but I don't think they'll spend their number one pick on linebacker, unless the combine and interviews add more questions than answers for all the offensive linemen available.

I think that if the Texans drafted mark sanchez, Bob McNair would send HPD to the war room to give field sobriety tests to everyone in there.

Call it value or whatever you would like, but there is no way in hell that we draft a 1st round QB. You draft a 1st round QB becuase you expect him to be your starter, either immediately or as an heir apparent to an aging starter. Schaub was brought in to be our starter and was paid starter money, plus he is still young. There is no way they abandon him after just 2 seasons.

Unless Schaub breaks his leg between now and the day of the draft, there is no way we draft a QB in the first round. Schaub has shown to have talent and right now, everyone and their mama knows what the Texans are in desperate need of is help on the defensive line, not another offensive player, they will have to groom to be ready for his first NFL season where we want to make playoff run.

IMO it wouldnt be smart to take Sanchez at 15 if he were there. We have more importantn holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball. When San Fran and Green Bay brought those QBs in the intention was to replace the current guys due to their careers beginning to wind down and the possibility of those guys retiring. If I'm not mistaken Schaub is not very old and has a pretty lucritive contract in place that he is only 2 yrs into. To waste a 15th pick on a QB to be his backup?? From what I know the QBs from that program dont fare very well in the pros i.e. Carson / Leinart. If the talent isnt there at 15 I hope Smith will find a trade partner thats willing to move up for some extra picks. The offensive talent difenitely wont be there but I think the defense has some pretty solid guys I wouldnt mind getting to help our team.

Draft a QB in the first round!? let me guess, we should draft Chris Wells if he's there too! we had the 3rd ranked offense in the league last year, the last thing we need to draft in the first is offense.
