View Full Version : Jags now in Salary cap hell

The Jags just realeased both Jerry Porter and Drayton Florence. So they have 19 million in dead money out there, so since they are prior to June 1 cuts they can take it over two years (I think) but man that hurts, it is like having two Ahman Greens on your team for two years. This plus the huge contract they gave to Garrard wil keep them from pursuing to much this year to improve.

Anyone else hoping the Jets sign Kerry Collins to get him out of the AFC, I would love to see Vince and his 40 passer rating back under center.

They can designate two players (probably these two) as June 1st cuts even though they release them before June 1st. Should kick most of the dead money into next year.

From everything that I've read so far, any cap penalties incurred this year must be paid this year since the 2010 season is (at the moment) uncapped. This is regardless of being a pre or post-June 1st cut.

Well, I hope they enjoy being in the bottom of the AFC south because I do not plan on seeing us back down there anytime soon! :)

Question 1.9b

Wow so that means the Jans have 12-15% of their cap 18.4 million in dead money ouch that hurts. That is like having 4 Ahman's on your team without out them suiting up.

According to Adam Schefter, the Jaguars have effectively freed up $4.1 Million by cutting Porter and Florence, not an incredible amount considering what it cost to bring them in for a single season.

They may have freed up the 4.1 million they would be paid this year but they have to absorb the rest of the GTD money, so they are still hurt by this.

Interesting. Rotoworld says Porter received $7.5 mil last year and Florence received $8 mil. Sounds like the Jags paid roster bonus money and took the full hit last year rather than signing bonus and pro-rating.

I tried to hint at this in my previous post. Although they technically gained 4.1, the money they lost in signing/releasing them with nothing to show for it is crippling. Quite a turn of events from what the buzz was surrounding the Jags last offseason.

They had Porter 10 and Florence 12 in GTD money plus they each got a 1 million salary so $24 million needs to be accounted for, I can't beleive the Jags were so far under the cap that they could have taken the full GTD bonus up front or ever the numbers rotoworld is quoting there were both 6 year deals.

Well it may not have been the full amount. If the numbers are correct and your $1 mil salary is correct then it appears $6.5 of bonus money went on the cap for Porter and $7 mil of bonus went on the cap for Florence. If like Reeves, the first year salaries were part of the guaranteed money then $15.5 of the $22 mil of guaranteed money has been accounted for. That leaves them with $6.5 mil to account for.

I saw on ROTO world the money figures you mentioned, but I am not sure that is what the salary cap numbers were. Is there a site to see the 2008 salary cap numbers? You may be right, it just sound too good to be true for them that they were able to eat so much of the salary cap last year.

I haven't seen a site like inthebullseye for the Jags cap numbers. I am just speculating on how the cap hit doesn't appear as big as it should be if everything was pro-rated signing bonus. Shefter's number may be off as well if for instance the remaining guaranteed amount was in guaranteed 2nd year salary.

As much as I would like to see the jags in cap hell, I think they are supposed to have over 20 million in cap space this year so they should be fine. I wouldn't expect them to make a big splash in FA or anything but they should have plenty of space to build their roster.

Now, the Colts are a team that is probably going to be strapped for cash untill the CBA runs out but with Polian's luck they will get out of it some how. I read somewhere that the Eagles have a riduculous amount of cap space so I expect them to be big time players if FA.

I hate to break it to you but the Jets are in the AFC. And Kerry Collins sucks! Did you see how badly he played against us? The rest of the team is so good that any mediocre QB will be good there.

Yep. People are still all over how "great" his arm is at this age.....NOT! Any time he tries a strong throw, it's very inaccurate. He's being smart by looking for a paycheck before he retires.

He already corrected his mistake once.

They are better with Collins than Vince Dung hands down, I want them to be forced to play Vince

Collins was in the probowl, he didn't have a bad season

Don't say that. You know we all want Vince to start. ;)
