The team's official website confirms that the Texans are in negotiations with DeMeco Ryans about a contract extension.
Ryans is skipping voluntary workouts to expedite a deal. The 24-year-old is probably using Lofa Tatupu's six-year, $42M extension as a benchmark. Source: houstontexans.com

We know they are going to sign him. I am guessing if they are starting them up again, the media attention over Ryans, Daniels and Robinson being less then satisfied has reached the point where Smith and the front office can't put it off anymore.

That or he was really holding off until he got his last FAs, they felt they needed before the draft. I am guessing the former though.

Edit: Just saw the thread about Demeco firing his agent, that probably also factored into renewed negotiations.

I have a feeling DeMeco's former agent was getting greedy and filling his head with false hopes (top 5 MLB money). I am hopeful that the firing means DeMeco has opened his eyes to his true value (Tatupu/Vilma money) and a deal will be done soon.

It's great to hear they are in negotiations again and if he truly is using Tatupu's contract as a benchmark then I say Demeco is well worth that kind of money and contract.

6yrs 42 mil is not bad for our middle LB who is out there callling our Defense and he is quite an impact player for our team. His contributions to this team go far beyond his stats (which I know are down from his previous year, but he was dealing with nagging injuries all year long AND WE GOT BETTER LINE PLAY IN THE 2ND HALF), he brings an intensity and attitude to this team that we have sorely needed. Not only that but his non stop motor and leadership are duly noted on the field and in the lockeroom

Now if we could just get Drob to pull his head out of his agents arse then we could all go back to football and focus on the happy days ahead. Playoffs with a statement baby!!

Good deal. Maybe AJ told him that the front office will give out extensions if you man up and don't act foolish.

Get it done, Rick Smith.

the one thing that is kinda exciting for me as a fan is that for the first time in team history we have several players that we have to sign who could be considered as being in the top 10 in the league at their position and the top 5 in the conference at their position

the one thing that disturbs me with this is can we sign all of them and keep the salary cap in a state where we can still be able to make some moves via FA for the next few years if needed not like the colts now

i expect all three to be signed to long-term deals by seasons end...unless dunta is just that upset about being franchised which still makes me think he just doesn't want to be a texan anymore...basically if we have a good year and make the playoffs i think he'll warm up to the idea of signing his contract...if we don't make the playoffs i think he'll just keep trying to find a way out of town

very true coach...and dont get me wrong I loved me some Dunta...but after this fiasco...I dont know how his reception will be once the season begins. Especially if he's still talking out of his rear end and is blinded by dollar signs...

If you ask me, I would say "See Ya!" to Dunta. He wants top corner money, but is not a top corner. He may be the best we have, but when was he on a pro bowl roster?
Especially since he has not been back from his injury that long, he sure is acting like a knucklehead. He should just accept the lofty price gained from the contract extension and then play his butt off. It will pay off in the end by either getting the contract he wants next year from us or someone else.

Has anyone found a link on this story? I looked all over the texans web site and can't find anything. I would have expected this to be on chron.com as well but nothing is there.

Yeah I wondered about that when I read it this morning. I then searched the original post on Google and it comes up with 4 results, and 2 are from the fantasy sports section of the USA Today and NBC. Then if you click that, it takes you to an article in the news archive here at HT.com, so either it is false or it is true but was taken down. Can Nick or anyone confirm anything?

This is a good measuring stick for Demeco.

This comes from a Rotoworld report. If you look at the article it references (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?STORY_ID=5214), it doesn't say they are currently negotiating but that it happened earlier in the season.

Those negotiations stalled (http://blogs.chron.com/texanschick/2009/02/demeco_ryans_joins_dunta_robin.html) and recently Ryans fired his agent (http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2009/04/07/linebackers-karlos-dansby-demeco-ryans-fire-agent-kirk-wood/). Who knows what will happen?

Typically, we don't hear much from the HT.com website about on going negotiations. Usually when they are i's dotted and t's crossed and totally signed.

I'm not sure. I know for a fact that we never reported anything about Lofa Tatupu and his contract being a benchmark for anybody's negotiations.

On Sportsradio 610 they were discussing the renewed discussions that Demeco is in with the team since releasing his agent. I would assume that means that they are currently in negotiations right now because they said specifically that Demeco firing his agent means that he was not happy with the agents efforts and wanted to strike up a fresh discussion about his contract.

Demeco is definatly one of the members we need to extend. The one person I would think about letting go would be owen daniels. No way is he worth a contract around 20 million guaranteed. I think alot of his production is kubiaks system.

Im sure Owens numbers will come down after the draft and his options are even more limited.

you guys are right. A guy that made the pro-bowl and had top 3 TE numbers last year doesn't deserve a better contract than the one he has.

Your right...does anyone think that if we let him go that our offense would be less prolific? He is a major cog to this working offense! The only one I would be ok to let go would be Dunta and even then I would have a problem with him leaving. If we drafted Jenkins or Davis it would alleviate the pain....but these three that are "unhappy" don't need to leave.

Agree totally. People seem to think pro bowl players are available on every street corner!

Thats why its called contract negotiations.. :p

Its all part of the negotiating process you can't make everyone happy that plays for you. Im sure they can meet in the middle we have oodles of time to do so. Demeco is obviously our top priority right now.

OD is definitely deserving a new contract just not the same one Kellen Winslow got, which is what OD is going for. that my friends is not cool.

NO TE deserves what kellen Winslow got. I am sure OD knows this. At the same time his agent is going to try and use that contract as a bench mark. doesn't mean it will happen though.

Kellen Winslow doesn't even deserve the contract he got

first of all, i want to make it clear that owen daniels is one of my favorite nfl players. however, i think he can be replaced. its a fact that he made the probowl and put up top 3 numbers for a tight end last season, but before we lobby for kellen winslow money on his behalf, lets not forget he had fumblitis his first two years and last season was his coming out party. i dont think you pay someone who had 1 great season out of three that type of money. he needs at least one more great season to earn his pay imo. besides, our offense is very TE friendly (shannon sharpe, tony scheffler), not to mention how attention payed to andre johnson and steve slaton last season helped his cause. again, he is a very good player for us, but i believe even joel dreessen would have had a pro-bowl season if he had the same opportunity that daniels had, mainly because of the type of offense we run, and help from andre and company. with all that being said, we still need to pay him for morale and continuity sake.
