Great news: DeMeco Ryans coming back to Houston for voluntary conditioning program
Craig Roberts of 790 am The Sports Animal and Sports Off Center on Channel 55 is reporting that DeMeco Ryans is coming back to Houston to participate in voluntary workouts next week. I have no link for you to that information, but he reported it on both his morning show yesterday and on his broadcast last night.
As you may know, Ryans was unhappy that he and the Texans could not agree to terms of a long term deal in the offseason. Ryans sat out the beginning of voluntary workouts as leverage to get a deal. TE Owen Daniels is participating in voluntaries even though he also wants a new deal and considered sitting out. Reports say that Daniels' rep is in negotiations with the team.
Shortly after, Ryans fired his agent. Arizona linebacker Karlos Dansby fired the same agent around the same time.
Roberts reports that Ryans is going to hire the same agent that represents Mario Williams. Williams' agent is Ben Dogra.
So I am hoping that it is "great" DeMeco Ryans news that he is coming back to the team and working out with them. Just as I am hoping that Ryans getting a new agent will help get him a deal. John McClain noted in a blog comment that he heard the offseason offer that was already rejected by Ryans was top 5 MLB sort of deal. Hard to say without looking at numbers or guaranteed money, but perhaps the agent change will help Ryans and the team finish a deal.

Well good move by ryans seeing as how he is STILL under contract. Also if he WANTS to be a leader of this team and make the money LEADERS make he needs to be there. I wasnt worried about it if he didnt show up eventually for mandatory workouts he would be fined and those fines are pretty hefty considering the contract he is under now. Im glad he fired his agent kinda goes to show he may not be as greedy as I once thought

Greedy or not, it's easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar. Showing up shows the team that he wants to be a Texan which in turns helps the team break out the checkbook to make him a rich Texan.

i need DEMECO to stepup and be the man this year:D....his intelligence and leadership must be more aggressive, for the $ he wants:D i think we will give it to him, but he must stepup bigtime. people on this team must be held ACCOUNTABLE :D and him as 1 of our leaders should make certain of that:D

Give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it was his agent that turned down that offer. DeMeco is actually a smart individual, he has terminated his agent, and he is showing good faith by showing up for workouts.
They will work out a deal soon.

My guess is he feels left out after seeing all those footage of the team doing yoga and jujitsu ;)
Either ways its good to have him back and definitely a good sign...take a hint Dunta.

Agreed. I think keeping in touch with other texans....he has found out that they enjoy the Jujitsu and yoga, and he doesnt wnt to miss out on something that can potentially help him to perform better, and perhaps in the long run, earn him a bigger pay check.

I dont understand these players...If we went to our boss and said that we weren't going to do any work until we got a pay raise we would probably be fired. I dont care if it was "voluntary" if the rest of the team is there you should be too. This goes for all of the players on any team, except the Cowboys because they suck and I hope they fail at life.

That's what I was thinking. Though, if it's true that he turned down top money, it's on him and his new agent. What more can a person want other than to be considered one of the top five people in their field?

To be the top [paid] person in their field.

Amen houstonsportsfan09 i am glad someone gets it, and maybe Ryan was thinking wait top 5 is better than 1.5 million or whatever this yr.

Perhaps, but Demeco hasn't earned that yet. He's been in the league, what, a few years? And he wants to be the top paid person in the entire NFL at his position? If so, he's smoking some hefty stuff.

Nothing personal but the difference is that people in normal jobs are more easily replaceable. Sure, they could refuse to deal with DeMeco and he could either play while pissed off or he could sit out (then he wouldn't be paid), but then the team still has a problem at linebacker. Theoretically, he is one of the best 32 MLBs in all of football. Not too easy to replace.
The negotiations just got off to a bad start. I expect that they will reach an agreement by the end of May at the latest.

Yeah I know, but just saying. That's how the NFL works. He obviously wants top pay if rejected top 5 money. Same could be said for Dunta. If player A becomes the highest paid player at his position(we'll say Kellen Winslow for example) and though he's not necessarily the best at his position, player B (say OD) who is looking for a new deal, is going to base or try to base his new contract off of player A's contract because he feel's he deserves top money and feels he is just as good, if not better than player A. But anyhow, hopefully all our players that need/want new deals, get their new deals and are happy.

Well, sure, reach for the sky and ask for the moon. That's a basic part of negotiating. But another part of negotiating is the possibility of the other side saying "F You" and walking away.
Dunta may think he needs to be the highest paid, but the truth is he's coming off a major injury, and a lot of people have called him undersized anyway. So, the Texans may be better off letting him test the market. No way he'll get top money elsewhere.
Sure, Detroit will pay him a zillion dollars, but Dunta also wants a Super Bowl Ring NOW instead of later.
I like Dunta, but I wish he had the guts to just admit he no longer wants to play here.

Maybe he is using us to get more money? Hmm I dont know. It'd be interesting to let him walk and see that he's not worth as much as he thinks he is, but comes back to sign with us. That's only in a perfect world.

I think we should definitely give DeMeco and Owen Daniels some new contracts after the draft so they are happy going into the season, and therefore keeping out team together mentally. This is the year we have to make a run so there is no reason to deny these guys what they really have earned.
On the other hand, at this point, I would not mind seeing Dunta leave. I'd like to see him play this year as a Texan, but if we can get some value for him draft pick wise in a trade, I would be all for it. He was good for a while, but he is NOT the best, and certainly not as good as he obviously thinks he is. With his injury and all, it is not really worth the risk to give him a huge contract or to let him cause any trouble in our locker room.
Here's to the Texans getting this all figured out far before the season starts!

I guess he wants a house in the bahamas, Houston, and his hometown. That explains why he needs all that money. Also store his dozen cars he owns...
