View Full Version : 5 Round Mock Draft (Harder than it looks)

When doing this mock draft I went based on an AVG. Mock Draft Position from a website.

http://thefootballexpert.com/2009nflmockdraftadp.html

When I selected for the Texans I didn't choose anyone above what our picks were but did at times grab someone alittle bit below our picks. Now for our picks and reasons why I selected them.

Round 1 15. Vontae Davis CB, Ill.
With Daunte still upset and us still needing some more help at corner if he stays or goes I believe that this would be a good pick. Would have selected Malcolm Jenkins from OSU but he is gone at this point. I don't select an USC OLB here but you will get one later on.

Round 2 46. Patrick Chung S, Ore. I would have liked Delmas here but he again is gone by our pick here. Maybe would have gone in another direction if I could have had Jenkins in the 1st since he or Daunte could move to S at a later date but still like having a play maker like Chung at this point at S.

Round 3 77. Chase Coffman TE Mizzou.
With OD being upset about his situation the Texans could use another play maker at the TE spot and could not pass up on someone with his ability and he could make OD expendable.

Round 4 112. Kaluka Maiava OLB USC.
Well for you USC OLB fans here is your guy. With the offseason moves we have made I believe that we can wait until this point to take an OLB and he has a great bloodline. Uncle is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Round 4 122. (via Minn.) Ian Johnson RB Boise St.
I know there are some other RB that people would like us to take but again I am going by the website that I linked above and he could be a good back up for Steve Slaton and look at what happened this year. He got moved to a back up role to better his team and you didn't hear him say a thing besides he just wanted to help the team win and that is the type of players we need.

Round 5 152. Lydon Murtha OT Neb.
Yes I know what you all are thinking we don't need an OT and I know this but he could move to OG and at 6'7 306 and the teaching of our zone blocking scheme and cut blocking could really help our line. Has good feet and is very athletic.

Would like to hear what you guys or gals think and again if you feel like doing so you can use the same website I did with the link above. Don't mind positive or negative comments but either way feel free to try for yourself when you give feedback.

When I looked at the player rankings and strengths and weaknesses and stats I used this website.

Since you asked. We've already got a Pro Bowl TE why would we take a backup TE in the 3rd round, it doesn't make sense. You take backup TE's in the 6th or 7th round. In the 3rd round we're still looking for starters. I'd take an OG/C here like Andy Levitre, Trevor Canfield, Antoine Caldwell. Our O-line needs some help and these guys are perfect for the ZBS system. In the 4th round I'd address the RB need and take James Davis or Glen Coffee and the other 4th round pick would be a good place for several positions maybe a backup FS like David Bruton, Derek Pegues, or Emanuel Cook or an OLB like Zack Follett or Deandre Levy, maybe a rotational DE like Matt Shaughnessy, Kyle Moore, or Henry Melton, or a good CB like Mark Parson. You've got us taking Kaluka Maiava in the 4th, this guy will most likely go very late or undrafted. He's 5'11" and 229 lbs. and ran a 4.68 on his pro day which is slow for someone his size, he's too small to play OLB, maybe he can play SS if he can add a little speed. Ian Johnson wasn't a bad pick but I think he can be had in the 6th round and the Lydon Murtha pick was very good, he's got great speed for his size.

I would take James Davis with either of the 4th's instead of Ian Johnson. Davis had average speed, but his size is what we are looking for to compliment the S.S. Lighting

My bad, I was responding to the original mock by Filoman. As for your mock I like all the picks except #2 Robiskie. We've got quality and depth at WR there's no need for a 2nd round WR, in fact we matched the offer that Denver gave to Anderson to keep him and he's our #4 WR. I really like the Davis, McKenzie, and McBath picks. Ehhhh on Shipley and Johnson, not bad but I think we could do better, replace them with Tyronne Green and James Davis, and I don't know anything about Frantz.

Frantz Joseph could end up having Tom Brady-like success in the NFL, seeing that he's a likely 5/6 Round pick. He's as physical as Ray Lewis in that you don't 'see' him make tackles, you 'hear' him make tackles.

Making a mock from that website was actually pretty entertaining, thanks to the OP for that. Here's what I came up with...

15. Vontae Davis (CB, Illinois)
- A great prospect at CB, pretty self explanitory.

46. Connor Barwin (OLB/DE/TE, Cincinnati)
- Am impressed with his athleticism. I see him as a situational pass rusher that can be brought in as a gimmick on offense until he grows into his new position. Will do well having Cato June, DeMeco Ryans, and Mario Williams to learn from.

77. Andre Brown (RB, NC State)
- 224 Pounds, physical, a good short yardage back.

112. Tyronne Green (OG, Auburn)
- I really think he'd excel in a ZBS. Has already faced tough competition and will provide depth until he's ready to start.

122. Kevin Ellison (SS, USC)
- Put up 32 reps at the combine, works well in run support and can make some game changing hits. Will show up in special teams if he doesn't earn a starting role.

152. Frantz Joseph (LB, Florida Atlantic)
- What can I say? I'm all for getting bigger and more physical on defense.

Needs not addressed:

DT - I'm hoping that Deljuan Robinson does what I think he will this season. Jury is still out on Okoye as I loved his rookie year and was underwhelmed last season. Hopefully his ankle will treat him better this year.

Backup QB - I make no excuse for Orlovsky, but I just couldn't see a QB I'd take over any of the above.
