Who are the Undrafted FA Signings you would like to see R. Smith bring in?

a RB would be nice. I cant count on Chris Brown and the other veteran FA RBs are not too appealing either.

I suspect we'll bring in Marlon Lucky - maybe Tyrell Sutton or Kory Sheets too, as I'm surprised they've not been taken - but what I'm really hoping is that we snap up Ian Johnson. He may not be the out and out thumper I was hoping for but he's a team player who can really play. He'd be a great addition.

...I think the FO feels THEY can count on him. I have to believe them. He was a horse before he got here, although ya'lls rebuttals are WAY more than valid. Anyway-- if that one, two punch somehow happens-- I think we all are happy.

Here's who I'd like to see us bring in from those who weren't drafted (*means I'd be happy if we get them, **means I'd be thrilled, no stars means 'worth a look').

Not all of these, obviously, but a selection from this group:

QB - *John Parker Wilson*, Drew Willy
HB - **Ian Johnson**, Kory Sheets, Marlon Lucky, PJ Hill
FB - Marcus Mailei
WR - **Quan Cosby**, Aaron Kelly
TE - Travis McCall (although we have about 23 TEs already)
OL - don't know - all the ones I know anything about were drafted
DT - Khalif Mitchell
DE - **Mitch King**, *Ian Campbell*, Rulon Davis, Michael Bennett
LB - *Darry Beckwith*, *Frantz Joseph*, Corey Smith, *Jonathan Casillas*
CB - *Derek Pegues*, Domonique Johnson
S - *Emanuel Cook*

Where to start. First, check your facts. The FO has been 1-3 with veteran backs. I am being kind to Dayne and giving him a pass. Green and Brown were terrible. How bout that year Brown had with us last year? A real brute. Brown was far from a "horse" before he got to Houston. He averaged 38 ypg in 2007, 31 ypg in 2006, and 57 ypg in 2005. In 2004 (his best year) he averged 97 ypg. Ain't no horse here. Just a worn out mule.:(

Quotes from Kubes on Chris Brown:

“He can provide a big back for us,” head coach Gary Kubiak said. “Steve’s a smaller guy. We need somebody who can do a little more pounding, red zone, short yardage, those types of things. That’s easier said than done, but we have that guy here with him if he’s healthy. So the key is whether or not he can stay healthy.”

“When he’s had his opportunities in this league and he’s been healthy, he’s been productive,” Kubiak said. “For us, it was a little bit of a risk (to sign him), knowing that he had struggled physically, but he’s doing everything he can do and we’re going to give him an opportunity to come back and help us.

Look - Kubes knows that he is making a big bet that NOT ONLY Slaton stays healthy BUT ALSO Chris Brown stays healthy. Just read his own comments above. The bet has so much more downside than upside, however, that I just can't understand such a bet. It is really, really strange to see this almost irrational behavior. I think there are some egos on our coaching staff that think their run blocking coaching is the end all be all and Kubes has been brain washed into believing that anyone can run in the system. What are we going to grab in FA -someone else's left overs? Is this how you win a super bowl - relying on a 200 pound guy to carry the load all season and a guy that has been injured every season that he has carried the ball? Hell no.

I certainly hope they have a trick or two up their sleeves for the remaining FO. Someone like Edge is the only guy I think that could shore up our RB situation. He is a real winner.

I would like Lane because of his quick feet just tell him to run straight forward and push the pile. But I've also always liked Ian Campbell, he reminds me alot of Grant Winstrom, and could possibly make the 53-man roster

Brock Christopher - Practice Squad LB that could develop into a solid backup at MLB.
Domonique Johnson - Excellent athlete that could contribute on special teams.
Justin Brantley - Work on his technique and let him compete with Turk.

I hope they're not counting their change and putting their money on Brown being a reliable backup yet alone staying healthy. The guy didnt even play a down for us last year and he got hurt in what TC or practice? They better be scouring the FA RB market.

Texans also signed Jeremiah Johnson RB (Oregon)

SCOUTING REPORT: Rebounded from torn right ACL that ended his 2007 season with an outstanding 2008, rushing for 1,201 yards and averaging 7.1 yards per carry to go with 13 touchdowns. Suffered a separated shoulder in the second game last season, but went on to play in all 13 games. Powerful and solidly built and runs low, tacklers have a tendency to bounce off him. Hard to bring down and has low center of gravity and good balance. Quick and deceptively fast, as evidenced by per-carry average of 6.7 yards in four college seasons. Makes sharp cuts, and combined with strength and compact build, has a multitude of ways to break off the big run. Also possesses good open-field vision. Never had more than 168 carries in college, a result of playing in Oregon's spread offense, which kept him from taking a pounding. Showed ability as a receiver, catching 36 passes for 303 yards in college and exhibiting good hands. Solid in pass protection. An effective and experienced kick returner, he brought back 30 kickoffs for 626 yards and 13 punts for 127 yards at Oregon. Despite strong build, will have to prove he has the ability to function as a short-yardage back in the pros. Like other successful college backs, has developed the tendency to sometimes dance and wait for a big hole to open, or bounce it outside looking for the big play - which won't work as well against the faster defenses in the NFL. Success of former teammate Jonathan Stewart, who's developing into a star running back with the Carolina Panthers, might help alleviate any concerns about whether Johnson can become an effective NFL player. A likely mid-round selection.

Just curious...whats the deal with PJ Hill?? I recall him being a hell of a bruiser at Wisconsin. Hell he used to drag 2-3 people into the endzone and all of a sudden he went undrafted??? Did he have an injury or some issues??

04/21/2009 - P.J. Hill remade his body, but nobody cared. During three seasons at the University of Wisconsin, the Poly Prep grad established a reputation as a bruising tailback, using his 240-pound frame to barrell through defenders and become the third-leading rusher in school history. But when the Queens product arrived at last month's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, he'd shed more than 20 pounds, weighing in at a svelte 218. NFL scouts, however, weren't impressed. "I think Hill was a little disappointing," says scouting analyst Gil Brandt, a former vice president of player personnel with the Cowboys. Indeed, Hill drew only tepid interest; few scouts even watched him run the ever-important 40-yard dash. His stock continued to fall when it was reported that he spent a night in jail after a March 14 incident in which he allegedly led police on a short chase while driving drunk (criminal charges have since been dropped). Hill has worked out for just two teams - the Browns and Bengals - and Brandt says he'll likely be a sixth- or seventh-round pick this weekend. Here, Hill talks about how he's stayed positive through the draft process: "I played the game really well at Wisconsin, so I'm very confident in my draft position. A lawyer has taken care of the (drunk driving) situation, so I've got to move on about that. It happened, but I'm glad it happened now. It made me grow up a lot. - New York Daily News

So let me get this straight....had a very productive career at wisconsin, hasnt been injured, lost weight and people were turned off by this???

I can understand him losing weight for the combine, its what everyone tries to do especially a 5-9 to 5-11 rb thats has to run the 40, but the reality is that his fram can handle 240 and we already know he can run well at that weight and run people over...he's proven it time and time again for 3 years as a badger....I just dont get it....

He hadn't pushed a pile since 06 when it looked like he still may have cared some about football instead of eating. If you can't move some front 7 in college, you can't move a safety in the NFL.

Smart runner, who stays low to the ground. Excellent vision, although he does seem to dance a little bit much. The guy can fly when he gets open though. Very intriguing.

Arian Foster I'm not too sure about. I like everything apart from the laundry list of injuries. I really don't want another back that's constantly injured - we should already have dropped Chris Brown IMO.

Jeremiah Johnson

He is talented enough to have been a 3rd Round pick. Check out the YouTube video of him.

I'm sure Casey will get the ball most of the time we're on the GL.

Also, I don't know why everyone buys into the "we need a big RB" myth. Nonetheless, Arian Foster is here and should do a fine job in Camp.

Looks like the Texans plan on addressing the running back need in FA. Johnson and Foster both had pretty good college careers, both rushing for over 1,000 yds and 10+ TDs. Not to mention the fact that other RBs will become available in FA as teams begin to unload RBs on their roster to fill other needs. RBs now come a dime a dozen, and aren't as highly coveted as previous years. IMO the Texans are having a strong offseason. With the draft, along with these rookie FAs, along with the offseason FA we definitely got better, addressed our needs and we got quality players from quality schools. No more players coming from Paw Paw, Michigan (Babin) or anywhere else off the map. I'm now ready for camp. Ready to see Cush bring havoc to our D along with Mario, Adibi, Demeco, and Dunta. Great job Rick Smith and Kubiak. Go Texans!!
