View Full Version : Are we trading O.D.?

After we made those 2 TE picks in 4 and 5 today, my buddies and I started thinking that maybe they were looking at trading O.D. with Winslow getting all of that cash and driving up his price. Casey seems like he will be a fine replacement.

I don't know about trading OD, but this certainly does send a strong message to him.

No, I seriously doubt we get rid of him. I think one of two things will happen, either we cut Dreesen or we don't resign OD to a long term contract this year. That way if James Casey proves to be a legit TE, the Texans can look to move OD after the season.

I was thinking the same thing. Why draft all these TE's? Your either trying to send a message or trying to trade Owen Daniels for another RB that we didnt draft for.

No way will we get rid of OD. We will most likely clear the other TEs for these two. Nothings wrong with having two TE formations. Our running game will flourish with the kid out of nc state being able to set a wide edge for Slaton to get around. We could also use Casey in many other ways than at TE allowing us to have maybe an extra WR/DB/RB on our roster. No worries...

It probably puts Dreesen on the outs and gives the Texans options regarding Daniels and his contract but not this year. The other TE is a blocker to replace Bruener. Also Casey could be the long snapper as well so it might free up a roster spot.

Come on people, OD isn't going anywhere! Look at what type of players these guys are. One is the big time blocking TE that we have needed for the short yardage situations. The other guy really isn't a TE, but actually an H-back type guy and will be used that way, even talked about by Kubes as playing some FB. The only guy that might be on the move MIGHT be Dreesen, as he is pretty much the same type of TE as OD is, just a bit slower.

Let's just break down the current TE situation.
Little recognized fact, the long snapper we ended last season with was a TE, which means we had 4 TE entering the offseason.
Anyway on the latest pick ups, Bruener who was our main blocking TE for years has officially retired after really not playing and basically being a player coach for a season or two. So they pick up Anthony Hill a legit blocking TE, because as nice as Dressen has been for us, there have been more then one occasion where he or Daniels cost yards or even touch downs because they had to hold the player they were blocking. Daniels is pass catching TE without a doubt and he has been trying to learn to block well for his entire tenure here but it would be better to have a TE you know can get that done for you rather then gamble. Also it means less work for Owen so he can focus on improving his strengths as well.
With the Casey pick up, the guy has only been playing football for about 2 years and he has played various positions on the field during his tenure at Rice, including some defense. Right now, he is no where near ready to take over for OD at starting TE, heck, he might not even be ready to be a NFL TE but there are other positions he might fit into. Longsnapper or full back come to my mind and word has it, he will be definitely spending most of his time initially on special teams. All this means is that none of the drafted TEs are capable of playing OD's role on this team right now which means OD is safe.
Stop the crying!

i don't think so, I think they were just adding depth and insurance, just in case.

Bruener is gone so they needed a blocking TE like Hill, who should be a very good one.
Casey was a great pick in the 5th round. I think he was worth taking regardless of need. I wouldn't read so much into the fact that the Texans took two TEs as evidence of Daniels being on the outs, as again, they did need a blocking TE.

I agree ... just going back to 4 TE's .... but at the price of "NO" running back ? I still don't understand .... the minute Steve Slaton has an injury , we become pretty much impotent !i don't think so, I think they were just adding depth and insurance, just in case.

Reaching on a RB just because you need one doesn't make that much sense. In Foster and Johnson I believe they've gotten the same caliber of RB talent as if they used one of their later round picks on a RB. Reaching on a pick is how teams end up with eventually nothing to show for their drafts.

Good lord. Here we go again. Folks Owen Daniels ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE. He is a MAJOR, KEY part of Gary Kubiak's offense.
He is not going anywhere. Repeat until you believe it, so we can stop these ridiculus threads.

People are understandably freaking out with our draft.
We're not used to spending picks on players we don't have a gaping hole of need for. This is the first draft that we didn't have to do anything but pick the best player on the board and when one was a beastly blocking TE and another a TE in name only (jack of all trades), it's no surprise that some freaked out badly.

OD is going somewhere, to the bench a bit more so that he can come in fresher. With the new talent they can rotate TE's a bit more and run some 2 TE sets effectively. With OD getting a little rest he will be much more likely to get an extra step on the defenders late in the game and his numbers could soar this year. So Owen, pack your bags for Hawaii again and prepare to be leied.
