Nothing like a little shakeup in the energy sector to make Texans fans wonder about the name of their football palace.
But the sale of Reliant Energy's retail power business to NRG Energy (isn't that redundant?) doesn't appear to affect the naming rights to Reliant Stadium, at least in the near term.
The Houston Chronicle reported earlier today that "NRG absorbs 1,300 Reliant employees [and] will also continue all sponsorship arrangements, including Reliant Park and Reliant Stadium."
The only confusing thing, to me at least, is that the Chronicle article stated that Reliant Energy Inc., would be changing it's name to RRI Energy, while this item from Houston Public Radio, said that Reliant "will continue to function as a self-contained business unit doing business as Reliant Energy."
Maybe RRI will be a subsidiary of the Reliant Energy business unit - who knows - but there's no indication that the Texans will be playing in "The RRI" or NRG Stadium any time soon. Maybe Bob McNair can chime in and clarify.
NRG (if pronounced 'energy') stadium wouldn't be all that bad - if it came to that.
It fits with the current theme and would still have a better ring to it than the University of Phoenix or Lucas Oil Stadiums of the world.
But if Exelon is successful in its bid for NRG, all bets could be off.
I'm not sure I would like the sound of 'Exelon Stadium,' although if they were to pick up the tab on that $10 million per year for the next 23 years deal to hang a couple signs on the stadium, it's not like we'll have much choice.
