With training camp around the corner we will see things hit up as position battles and players looking for a roster spot hit the field in full pads. we have somethings to watch. Orlovsky and Grossman, JJ and Arian Foster, Andre Davis Jacoby Jones and David Anderson, Casey and Hill, TJ Deljuan and Okam, Diles and Adibi, Bennett and Reeves, Barber and Ferguson. Which is of most intrest to you and will be most important to team success this year?

CB. I want to see which CB's step up after losing Robinson and Faggins. Molden will likely still be injured, and Bennett still has plenty of room to impove. And we can't forget to see what Quinn does.

Robinson barring injury will play every game this season. Assume he wants to leave the Texans and it means this is his audition tape, plus teams don't like petulant players and when was the last time a player held out any significant time into the regular season?

I was going to watch the Punter competition. However, now that Brantley was waived there won't be much competition in that position.
I think I'll keep an eye on the running backs situation. I want to see who is going to back up Slaton and whether the UDFA's can make the team.

I cant say that im going to be watching a certain position battle, but i want to see the defense as awhole unit. Im anxious to see this new aggressive, Bush-syle of defense. Jus got a gut feeling we are going to see the type of D we all been craving for--WRECKING HAVOC!!!:D

I really want to see the DT position battles. This barring major injuries will be our biggest need along with FS. With FS, we just don't really have a battle going on there so I think DT will be where I want somebody to step it up.

Running back. I wanna see if Brown survives to the opener and if not, which one of the rooks takes his spot.
CB and DT will be interesting also. Will Bennett be back to his rookie production? Will Quin break into the starting lineup or at least break in as a nickel or dime DB? Will Travis Johnson get cut? (the voices say "yes")
Can't wait to get a live look at Cushing either. Wonder if he's really "all that"?
The last mega-hyped USC guy we were interested in was Reggie Bush and we've seen that he wasn't quite as advertised. Neither was mega-hyped QB Leinhart. I hope that's not the case with Cushing, but then again, outside of Polomalo (sp?) what recent USC player has been all that their hype machine has advertised?
The whole defense. Need to bring that PAPG down just a tad.

I'm gonna be watching all the positions with players in their last year of their contract. So TE (Daniels) LB (Ryans) and CB (Drob). I will also be watching the Defensive line, mainly Okoye, Smith, and Barwin, but hopefully Okam also if he can get on the field enough.

best battle will be for weakside linebacker. A three way between Diles, Adibi, and June. Our LB depth is going to be amazing.

The cornerback situation is sure to be the most interesting of the season.
Aside from who starts, who sees the field more will tell what the coaches think about some of the rookies and those younger guys who have been here for a while. Although from what I have heard it absolutely sucks for Molden.
He was being praised very highly in his rookie off season and for his special teams work. Sadly his injury at the end of last season appears to still be lingering which seems to be taking him out of the running to compete. Which might not be vital right now but the good graces that Quinn and McCain are earning could go a long way next off season if/when Dunta walks and its open competition for a starting spot.

schlauton I'm with you the cornerbacks seem to be the biggest question mark going into this season and the entire secondary as a whole will be carefully placed under the microscope as its Gibbs first year with us as the db coach. everyone is closely monitoring the D-rob contract scenario as this could have the biggest effects on the secondary, but I am also intrested in seeing Eugene Wilson more actively involved in this group. The guy was a big boon for us and brings needed experience at the Safety position. as to the recently drafted calwell, he wont see much time at center unless Myers is injured, but he might be able to push Breseil at rg.

I want to know if TJ and AO can step up and solitfy one of those spots.
and id lk to see what we got in okam and robinson.
plus im looking forward to seeing smith move to inside on passing downs and mario and barwin on the ends. Im looking forward to that line and seeing how they attack the opponent's offense on passing downs.

Im excited to see who comes out at WLB. Diles was playing at a very high level before his injury last year, and if Adibi can hold on to that spot ahead of him, that says a lot about what the coaches see from him.
Im also watching Frank Okam, who is supposed to be around 30 pounds lighter, but still extremely big. If he can be the run stuffing NT he has always had the potential to be and just has a breakout camp, we could be looking at a great a DL.
Lastly, I think Caldwell takes someones spot.

from what i hear caldwell will be a back up.
his is just a 3 spot guy. back up center and both guard spots.
so if anyone gets injured then he will start but far as his rookie season it sounds lk they want to keep the same 5 from last yr since they started all 16 games with those 5.
I dont have a problem with him being a back up. and i do believe he will be a starter through injury or a starter next yr in 2010-2011

I hope that's not the case with Cushing, but then again, outside of Polomalo (sp?) what recent USC player has been all that their hype machine has advertised?
Carson Palmer, Lofa Tatupu, Mike Patterson, Keith Rivers, Steve Smith, Lendale White, Ryan Kalil, Justin Fargas, Matt Cassel, and Sedrick Ellis. Here are some that are pretty salty players. I don't like USC, but they have turned out some very good talent through the years.

I am basically keeping my eye on the defensive side of the ball. SS, CB, D-Line, and the LBing core to be specific. There are not any positions on the offensive side that I am concerned about, but I am interested in seeing how the RBs shake out during TC and preseason. We have some potential for the number 2 spot even if it is simply fielding Brown to rest Slaton.
I am nervous about the D and cannot wait to see them in action!

this will be interesting to see also. we have Ryan Moats who is bringing a physical element to his small compact style, how well will Chris Brown return from injury and will he be able to stay healthy will be something to watch. Which of the un-drafted rookie free agents will have the chance to make an impact? Arian Foster has looked good in OTAs. Johnson has been picking up the pace since joining the teams for mini-camp. If one of these rookies cant crack the roster I should think with Brown's history, he will most deinitely be signed to the practice squad.

What I will be looking forward to most in the preseason games will be the dl play. Is Smith the guy we thought, is Barwin more than a one trick pony, can Okoye step in up and be the penetrating force in the middle.
In my opinion it is going to be much more important to put pressure on the other teams passing game than it will be to stop the run because our offense will be scoring in bunches and our ability to stop them from quickly answering back will decide most games.

Coog if we average 8 more points a game (31) I think you could be on our defense and we still go 12-4
Anyway you look at it I think we are better at RB (slaton speaks for himself) Chris Brown will be goo d for say 6-8 games this year so once he is done we bring the kid from Tennesse up and we are solid, Moats is are emergency guy as well.

Slaton is a superstar, but we still do not have a guy who can pound it in. If we are relying on Chris Brown we are in serious trouble. So we are putting our faith in Chris Brown (who has never been particularly spectacular), Ryan Moats (who did not sparkle last season), and the undrafted Arian Foster (who is so great that you could not remember his name.) Sounds more like desperation than a real strategy to me.
Other than Vonta and Slaton I see a big dropoff in our scoring potential.

Last year we had a solid rushing attack with Ahman Green 60-80 carries which I expect Brown/Foster can duplicate, I feel better about Slaton in 09 than I did in 08 so what are you looking for if we rush for 1600-1800 yards we are golden. Foster was lead back in the SEC the SEC is as close to NFL football as any conference. So yes I feel comfortable, just like Denver being able to still have great rushing from 5-6 backs last year. We won't need that many but as long as they know the system we will be OK. Next year we probably need to invest a higher draft pick on a RB but for now I am comfy with the Offense.

So in your opinion, does a fan have to have an ounce of faith in their team in order to be a fan or can they be full of doubt and still be a fan? Because to be totally honest, if I disliked a team as much as you appear to dislike the Texans I would not refer to myself as a fan. I would refer to myself as a person that dislikes the team and everything they stand for.
I used to like the Cowboys because my dad grew up in Dallas and always talked about the good ol' days. I now hate everything about the team and would not call myself a fan. The way you talk about the Texans is the way I talk about the Cowboys now.
I am coming to the conclusion that you are either nuts... or just a troll here to screw with people.

I will be keeping my eye on 2 different positions this season of importance.
1st and most important, is QB. I would hate to think of where we would be if Matt goes down as he has in the past several seasons.
2nd, I will be watching the RB position. Same reasons, if Steve goes down, will our back-up, whoever that is, will he be able to step right in and not miss a beat?
I know we signed a few players for back-up, but can they provide the punch as our starters can? We are deep every where else. Those are my 2 major concerns for the upcoming season...

Iv followed fosters career since he was a freshman out of high school
imo
he doesn’t have what it takes
he lacks true passion and he is fine with being a back up and collecting a pay check.
they guy is a fumbling machine!!! Lk bad as it gets. MAJOR FUMBLING ISSUES!
if he fixes the turnover issues I’m sure we can use his services for something but there is better out there.
to me...he is a waste of a roster spot and will be surprised if makes it past the final cuts.
but he does have potential and I wish him the best.
I prefer J. Johnson.

actually Moats has shown the ability to run with authority between the tackles even with his short stature and is in competition for the #2 spot behind Slaton. i think in all likely hood we will drop dawson before training camp. and before the preseason one of the undrafted rookies will be on the practice squad.

I'll be watching a few "things" , not necessarily positions.
In order of importance.
1.) How long we give opposing QB's time to find his wr's. In the past we not only didn't get pressure but without Mario the opposition could pretty much just stand back there all day and wait for someone to get open. Mario at least ot some pressure but he can't do it all by himself. I'm anxious to see whether we have any kind of pass rush including line stunts, lb blitz's corner blitzs and basically all that encompasses gettign after the QB. We have been horrible in the past and that has to change to improve our defense.
2.)Duane Brown- I'm anxious to see whether he can do his job this year and keep guys off Matt.
3.) Kubiak- I'm hoping his time management mistakes, his throwing the challenge at the wrong time and not throwing it problems have been resolved. I also hope i don't see him throw in the towel when there is still a possibility of a miracle win. Go for it on 4th and 25 if we have to instead of punting when the game is on the line. I also want to see him get a little bit better in game preparations and also at halftime changes. He often doesn't seem to have a good gameplan and he doesn't always make correcting adjustments at halftime. Thats got to change for us to win those tough games.
4.)As always i want to watch our CB's which is lookign like Reeves and Robinson. I saw enough of Reeves to know he has the speed and recovery ability to keep up. But i want to see if he has learned to feel the ball coming ...turn his head around, and make a play ont he ball, instead of waiting for the completion and then making the tackle. Robinson , i will be lookign to see if he is still grabbing and holding in order to keep up with the recievers like he did last year. In my opinion, he was lucky he didn't get a flag thrown huis way on every passing play because from wghat i saw he deserved one. I don't see how he is going to be any different this year with all the time off and not being prepared. No one can hold out and then just jump right in. It's bull. He is going to suck for longer the longer he holds out. It's a proven fact, that players who hold out...do not get their groove on for several weeks and sometimes 2 months into the season. I'll be watching him.
5.)Matt Schaub- Early ball decisions. He made too many early mistakes which put us in a bad position last year. To be an elite QB, he needs to be a little more intelligent with his decisions. I'll be watching for that.
6.) Jacoby Jones fumbling. We can all watch that.
7.)Cushing- Can he cover? I'll be watching that.
8.)Of course i'll be watching the rest of our new guys. I have high hopes for them to help the team in the years to come.
9,) Demeco- I know..i like him too...but his weakness is playign too much instinctively. I hope he continues to improve his mental game in figuring out the play early. Even his devoted fans have to admit , his first year he was fooled by every fake. He got more disciplined last season but was still not holding his position and often got fooled by misdirection. I'll be watching him to be smarter this year and i hope he starts watching a lot of films so he can be the guy who yells out what the play is before it happens. He just gets burned too easily and although no one wants to admit it...it was Demeco who got faked out by Vince Young. He had that play and Young faked him out and scored on that long run because he beat Demeco. We need him to be more solid in his decisions and keep his good instincts. I'll be watching him to improve as a complete defensive nightmare for the offense.
10.) If i knew who our safety was i'd be watching him but i think that position is still up in the air.
Thats abotu it for my top 10 things i'll be watching this season.

Have to admit? - not even close. Demeco is both instinctive and intelligent. That is why despite his less than stellar athleticism he makes sideline to sideline plays and is often there outside the hashmarks making a play in front of one of the OLB's.

Demeco and Morlon ran a crossing blitz with Demeco running inside out and Morlon vice versa. Morlon got taken out by the RB and it was Demeco coming from in between Morlon and Mario that caused VY to bring the ball down and run.

right on the Mlb thrives on his instincts1 demecos instincts is why he has over 100 tackles every year. his instincts are we he is around the ball making plays. demeco is undeniably a top 5 mlb in this league. i think only Lewis and Urlacher are better than him, but he is fast closing the gap!

If you don't think that was Demeco's play to make then i am not sure what you were seeing. Demeco had a clear shot at Vince and blew it.
But mostly i am refering to Demeco going for fakes. Not getting burned by Vince. He gets fooled a lot because he goes for what ever the fake is before he reads the play. Misdirection is Demeco's weakness. Also he has a tendency to over pursue and get lost in the wash.

demeco averages over 100 tackles a year. He can sack the qb, he can jar the ball loose with hits, he can drop into coverage and make ints! The guy is in the top 5 of all lbs! Even Ray Lewis and Urlacher can still bite on misdirections and play fakes, but Demeco is only in his 4th season. The guy is the complete package at mlb! there are so many other positions of weakness on this team, demeco's play along with Mario's has been the only consistants on this defense!

Being undersized and still able to recover and play sideline to side line is what makes him great. Mostly his leadership skills and his work ethic are what i appreciate the most. But go watch any game since he has been in the league and maybe you will see what i mean about him getting fooled easily.

i have watched every Texans game. I have seen himget fooled occasionally by the mis-direction and counter plays, but he makes more plays on his instinct alone and makes more plays than he gives up. nobody is perfect. i respect your opinion and am just giving you mine. he is still a relativly young player and will only get better with time1 (which is the scary part being he is rated the third best mlb in the NFL)

He has improved every year even if the stats don't show that. imo.
His rookie year he fell for every fake. Which is a testament for how good he can recover. Considering his stats in his rookie year.
I think like you do as far as him being one of the best but i want him to be the unquestioned best at his position. He has a few things he can improve upon.
I've enjoyed watching his progress. He is a great football player and we were lucky to get him. Not too many people realized just how good he was and i think we agree that within a year or so he will be the best at his position.
When he and Mario were rooks they seemed to really compliment each other. I like watching their bond and the way they seem to know what the other is going to do.

true and we have two of the best defensive players in the league with mario and Demeco! as far as I'm concerned those two have been the heart and soul of this defense for the past 3 years! if we can establish a descent secondary and at least finish in the top 15 we should be in the playoffs this year!

quite honestly I looked at the video over and over and it looked like Demeco was playing the blitz then pulled up on a pump fake. I think if he goes strait for Young he would have made the play, but you have to give some credit to Young on the play he didnt panic and was able to evade and make a big play. I think if Ryans had a chance to do it again he would just make the sack. Nobody's perfect though that's how you learn, by getting burned a few times.

thank you! thank you!
That's how i saw it too and i have a clean video of it. Not that blurry utube one.
And i agree that everyone gets burned...but a little discipline would have gave us that game on that one play. That's why i will be watching demeco...to see how much better he gets.

I believe Demeco is the last person we will have to worry about the secondary is our major concern!

I didn't say i was going to worry about him, only that i'll be watching him as the thread is about what we will be watching. Maybe i misunderstood the thread topic?

well we have been talking about groups as a whole, like the cbs or dts. the lb corps will show a lot of intrest to many. demeco is one of the key players. but the battle for rolb spot between Diles, a beefed up Adibi, and veteran cato june, how well brian cushing transitions from the college to pro game, and how productive he will be for us, alll of these things make the lb corps exciting to watch and i will be keeping my eye on the lb corps throught this season.

To be honest, I'm going to be watching the Head Coach. Gary has to make better decisions about a lot of things.

the staff will be under heavy observation, but i belive more so the defensive side. i believe we will all be paying attention to how well shannahan handles the play calls in certain situations on offense especially in the red zone.
