Here are 3 S to keep an eye on in 2009 College season. Looks like a great year to get a game changer in 1st round.
Taylor Mays (S) USC
- Mays looks to be the top senior defensive prospect available for the 2010 draft by a decent margin. He's a huge safety who can really cover.
Eric Berry (S) Tennessee
- Eric Berry just screams Raiders. He's the type of defender that made the team so feared in the 90's. Berry's going to be a very good one
Morgan Burnett (S) Georgia Tech
- Burnett is simply too good to stay on the board past the first round, he's an outstanding talent.

With Dunta presumably leaving next year, CB should be a bigger priority. I do like the Safeties you mentioned there...especially Mays.

Give me Eric Berry and Major Wright over Mays anyday. I would say Berry is definitely a more complete prospect than him.
Free Safety will be on the Round 1 radar, as well as CB. SS not so much, because D Barber is going to show up in a big way this season! I've got that feeling....

Oh yeah, don't forget about the overrated Longhorn.
Vince Young, Derrick Johnson, Ricky Williams, Cedric Benson....
What NFL bust will they dish out next??

Ricky Williams isn't a bust, he's just got in trouble and couldn't pan out in his prime.

Why is DJ a bust, starting NFL LB. Might not be the best in the game but still a really good, solid starting caliber LB.

Not to mention prior to Ricky going all druggie, he was a pretty dang good RB. No one could have lived up to his hype with the Saints trading pretty much every pick they had just to get him.
There was a post here sometime before that talked about Texas actually producing some of the better players in the NFL and not so many busts.
Back on topic, I wouldn't mind any of those safeties. I am curious though as to how Mays will do this year without the LB core coming back as well as some D-linemen. He's already rated high on some people's draft boards, but all it takes is a bad season and he might regret staying another year.

A few have been successful in the past...just off the top of my head:
Doug English
Steve McMichael
Jerry Gray
Eric Metcalf
Limas Sweed
Kenneth Sims
Earl Campbell
Ricky Williams....don't know that I'd call him a bust, and VY and CB are still young...they may surprise you down the road.

The ones I listed were off the top of MY head. I don't do research back to 1950 when I try to make a point.

Eric Metcalf - 90s
Limas Sweed - present
Kenneth Sims - 80s
Earl Campbell - late 70s - 80s

Doesn't make your point any more valid. The only recent player in your list is Sweed and he hasn't done anything. Look up his stats. He had a whole 6 catches for 64 yds in 2008 regular season and 2 catches for 20 yds in the post season. Kinda of tough to say he is a success with those kind of numbers.
Not all recent UTex players are busts but most of them that have entered the league in the Mack Brown era have either been busts or take 3+ years to adjust to the league. 3+ years is a long time when you are talking about spending 1st round money on a player.
If I am the Texans draft guys I wouldn't touch a player from UTex before the 3rd or 4th round. Just too much money invested in these players to risk them taking so long to adjust if they ever adjust at all.

I like to over-exaggerate things every now and then. It really adds an exclamation to whatever point I may be trying to make. You get the jist of the argument I was making.

The only recent (within 3 years) UT draftee I can think of that's had any immediate success is Justin Blalock. I like your train of thought.
I mean, unless Rashad Bobino pans out this season!!

hmmmm we have Eugene Wilson who is pretty good, troy Bolan had outstanding numbers in college and I hope he gets a crack at the starting job. we'll see if Barber can push ferguson who is a sound tackler at SS. john Busing will be cut most likely. with the team being pretty good talent wise, we have the luxury of drafting at many positions, not really having a greatest position of need.

I'm not sure who Troy Bolan is, but man, that Troy Nolan sure does look good!

my bad typo! lol if i read correctly he had 10 interceptions and had either two or four returns for td's and was a strong tackler from the safety position in college. if he can make that type of impact in the NFL he will be a big time star!

I'm with you man. He had 10 interceptions in 2 seasons IIRC. He has all the physical tools to be a beast in the pros, but he's got some dogs ahead of him he's going to have to beat out.
I say he makes the roster and pushes Brandon Harrison out.

i completely agree, and john busing will be gone as well. What was up with that signing?

If we don't get taylor mays or eric berry I'm going to be really upset. Eric berry is simular to ed reed and taylor mays is simular to sean taylor. I really really hope we can nab one. But I know both as of right now with their draft stocks are top 10 picks, and we r going to be a playoff teams which means we will be picking 20's hopefully 32. So its going to take a lot to move up and get eric or taylor. But I hope some how we do. I don't want to settle for major wright or barnett or earl thomas or reshad jones.

Cory Redding
Roy Williams, despite playing for Detroit has played well (over 800 yards 3 times and over 1300 in '06)
Derrick Dockery
Quentin Jammer
Derrick Johnson (once again, a very solid LB)
Michael Griffin (one of the top young safeties in the biz)
Aaron Ross (started in and won a Super Bowl)
Cedric Griffin (starter on a very good vikings d)
Bo Scaife
Shaun Rogers
Jamaal Charles (averaged 5.3 per carry last year)
and thats just like the last 8 or 9 years
But on topic, dont think we get a shot at Eric Berry or Taylor Mays, even though I think Taylor Mays will be a beast at the next level.
People I would like for us to target are as many said, Major Wright, but also Reshad Jones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kP5nmyNSgk). Big physical safety that had 5 picks last year. Athletic and was allowed to return some punts because he can be dangerous after the pick. Always brings the hat. If I were Smith this is who I would be looking at. Check the link.

I believe that both Berry and Mays will be Top 10 picks. With only 5 or 6 wins then the Texans might have shot.

The last 2 or 3 years cb/safety has been a high-priority need area and the coaching staff for whatever reason has decided these slots can be filled with lower round picks. No reason to think that will change. Time will be better spent looking at what TEs will be available when we pick.

we will have to wait till next year before we find a true weakness on this team we may be going in a few different directions,

I agree, the coaching staff has totally ignored this aspect of the team with any kind of quality talent and it shows cause our secondary sucks. Hopefully we can address CB in the 1st round with Haden or Lindley and then Safety in the 2nd with Wright or Burnett, maybe even try to trade up in the 2nd round to guarantee a quality pick. Kubiak needs to start spreading those high round draft picks around and add some talent to this secondary.

I really like Mays, I think he's going to be an excellent NFL player, probably a guy who will end up playing in pro bowls, but Eric Berry right now is my NUMBER 1 player in the 2010 NFL draft. I'm talking a guy who could change an entire defense in his rookie season. This is my fourth year of doing draft rankings, and he is in my top 5 for players i've seen. Comparisons to Ed Reed, seriously.
