He deserves to be higher that that.
Arguably so....hopfully all the recognition isn't all going to his head. If he thinks he deserves Kellen Winslow type money then he is crazy. With that said, he is a huge asset to our team...

I could maybe maybe see putting him at 4th ahead of Dallas Clark, but the other 3 were spot on.

idont think he is better than dallas Clark yet. clark also has benefitted from the attention to reggie wayne and the healthy marvin harrison. this list is pretty close to the real deal. i cant argue his top choices. witten and gates will eventually leap frog gonzalez in playing ability. i think if witten stays productive he could take some of gonzalez's receiving records. As much as i hate the cowboys, I like witten cause he isnt in that cocky mold like some former cowboys.
If you include blocking, recieving and route running skills, I'd rank him in the top 3 with Witten and Clark, with Gates and Gonzalez taking up the 4 and 5 spots.

LOL, Clark also benefitted from having Manning being the one throwing him the ball. Gonzalez is just plain good no matter who throws it. I think Witten might be close to Gonzalez talent wise. Daniels is not quite the blocker Gonzalez is. So definately Daniels is in the top 3 or 4. We'll see if he get a pro bowl starting spot a few years in a row before I put him any higher.

people tend to forget Gates has come along way in his blocking as well.

Dallas Clark really wasn't very good for his first four years barely able to catch 1 or 2 balls a game. Only the last two seasons has he really started to become a guy who gets the looks and produces the big numbers. Is he better than Daniels? Not according to the numbers. try comparing their first 3 years in the league and Daniels out shines Clark by a long shot.
Daniels-167 catches-1982 yards(Missed 2 games in three years)
Clark-91 catches-1251 yards(of course Clark didn't play all 16 games-he missed 8 games in these 3 years)
Of course if you want to compare them now..i'd say that OD still gets the edge because he is younger and has improved faster and is already at the point that took clark 6 seasons to get to.
Just one opinion but I never thought Clark was very good. He benefitted a lot having Harrisson and Wayne and Peyton and still sucked his first 4 seasons. Although i do see he has developed into a pretty good player the last two years how long can he last and sustain his high level now that Peyton is aging and Harrisson is gone?
Would i draft Clark in my fantasy league....sure...but not if OD was still on the board.
I agree with the others on the list and rankings. Gonzo and Gates are interchangeable. But OD should be #4 and Clark #5.

You can not be serious Gonzalez is the be TE to ever play football so as long as he is stillout on the field he will be number one although he does not have a ring he is still number one.

Dont forget clarks numbers early were modest because Marcus pollard was still a colt. He will be the #2 focal point in the Colts passing game this year.

They were crazy to pay Winslow what he is getting, now he just has to play... I'll never draft him in my league..... OD & Witten are the goto guys....

My top 5 is..
Tony Gonzalez
Jason Witten
Antonio Gates
Owen Daniels
Kellen Winslow (when healthy)
.... then
Chris Cooley
and Dallas Clark

Yes, I am serious.
He's not the blocker Witten, Daniels, Clark or Heath Miller is.
He's about on par in terms of pass catch ability with Witten, Daniels, Winslow and Gates.
Best of all time, perhaps.. But we're talking RIGHT now. Sorry, I don't have him in my top 3.

Have you ever seen him play!? He's a WAY better blocker than Daniels and Clark! IMO he's as good as the other two as well, but thats debatable. And since you know so much, Gonzo led all TE's in recieving yards and TD's (5th in the entire NFL) last year. So yes, "today", he is the best in league.

No I've never seen him play in my life..
Sorry, but I disagree with you. That doesn't mean I "know so much", it's called having a ****ing opinion, so get off your high horse.

Gonzo is definitely one of the best, but let's be honest here. He was on a team that sucked and had a shaky at best QB. Shaky QB's with no WR's look to their TE as a woobie. Swap OD and TG last year and both would have played well for their teams and while they wouldn't likely have literally swapped stats, they would likely have inverted overall results.

I didnt mean anything by the "know so much" comment. I just thought it was funny that you didnt think the no. 1 tight end in football (statistically) is a top-3 tight end. I was assumption that you didn't know the stats. Didn't mean to offend.

Thigpen actually played surprisingly well last year IMO... also he has duwayne bowe. Ask any d-coordinator, if the TE is the most productive reciever on your team, they're not gonna ignore him... Gonzo was not some second/third option, he was there go-to guy with Bowe, and trust me defenses treated him like one. Daniels might be at Gonzalez's level receiving wise but 88 has him in blocking IMO.

relax and breath easy man, everyone has an opinion, not everyone is of the same opinion. when you make a post be ready to backup why you are of the opinion. even these boards are competitive! God ya gotta LOVE FOOTBALL!

Okay. You are right and i get your point.
But Clark started with indy's 2 tight end formations and when he (marcus) left 2 years later Clark continued to stink for 2 more years.
But point well taken here. I get it that he shared catches with Pollard who was the consumate veteran and made contributions to indy int he waining part of his career. I would have thought that Clark would have benefitted with pollards years of experience and exploded after he left but that didn't happen.
You still make a valid point about Clarks first 2 years and i was wrong not to bring that up in my assessment of Clark. It certainly could have delayed his progress. Thanks for the heads up on this fact. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. I don't always know what i am talking about. lol duh.

thats ok i enjoy your posts and some of the issues we have debated on and seen eye-to-eye on. pollard was mannings safety net for a while and left dallas with some big shoes to fill it took time but i believe he has finally out-grew those shoes

Yup, the last 2 years Clark has really looked like the real deal. Let's hope Cushing can cover more than they claim he can. or those indy games are going to again be rough.

Great news I have been Open Daniels biggest fan since day 1. (nickname is trademarked sts circa 2006) Once he got past the dropsies he became one of the Texans biggest threats.... he is always open and cand do some damage in the middle of the field.

i think indy will use alot more of the two te's and we will see less of the multiple reciever sets with the loss of harrison, but the distribution to the te's will increase and i share your sentiments on Cushing, I'll have to llok it up but the colts have anther talented young te behind clark also, forgot his name though.
