Which players are you guys going to be keeping an eye on and who else is excited to see some of our fringe players blow up the Buds tonight?
I am looking forward to getting a solid look at Busing and the rest of our secondary players. I would love to check out Cushing and see him get some play time prior to the season opener if that is an option.
On the other side of the ball I cannot wait to see Foster get some carries. Maybe Rex will burst on the scene and look good for a change too!

We have a young secondary that could grow together to become a solid unit WITHOUT Dunta. I am really excited about all the pieces we have brought in and I hope Bush is the glue that brings all those pieces together.

True, but i really hope they aren't forced to do anything without Dunta. I'm going to be very relieved if/when he shows up next week!

Arian Foster and Antoine Caldwell, most definitely!

For me definitely Arian Foster and Molden. Molden has been praised for his ability and size for a year now, and he didn't look half bad last week. I'm hoping he can become a decent starting defensive back.
I saw hustle in Foster last week, so I want to see what he can do with a bulk of carries to see if he can maintain his strengthen when hitting the hole. It's almost 99.9% that Chris Brown will go down, so I'd like to see if Foster can be that hungry deep bench player in case the RB corp gets banged up.

Dunta will be there "in body" on Monday, but his soul seems to be missing.

Fosters MASSIVE block in the backfield against the vikings will help him earn a spot on this team. He looks to have solid vision and a good football IQ.
I am not sure he will pass Moats on depth and I am not sure he will make it to the practice squad either. Of course we also have not seen what kind of talent the other teams have released yet that we might rather pick up.

way to over value one performance. Keep in mind the level of competition he is facing as well. Im not wishing to hire or fire a player over 1 outing.

I just hope Rex has a great outing. I think he is better than Dan O and i think he is better than Sage. I do not think Dan is better than Sage. So i think Rex is a qb back up upgrade. saying Grossman should be #2 is an opinion, not a fact. What are you basing that on? 2 series in a preseason game? Everyone likes to make fun of Dan for running out of the end zone, lets not forget Sexy Rexy's QB rating of a zero in a game up in Chicago. Personally neither one of them gives me a warm fuzzy as the backup.
This actually a good online stream, its just about 5-10 minutes behind.
Yosarian
09-04-2009, 07:45 PM
I agree with the Rex as #2 until i see better decision making by Orlovsky.
But again, just an opinion. I know we paid Dan a lot and therefore he is "supposed" to be our 2
Sportswriter79
09-04-2009, 07:49 PM
Personally I would like Grossman at backup because he seems to get the ball out alot faster then Dan plus he does have alot of experience. Dan can still be here learn and get better. Looks too slow right now and we need all the help we can get. Just a simple faster QB helps alot! Plus with very little practice he looks pretty darn good tonight.
This has been my expectation since we signed him. I think that he's a slam dunk for #2 simply because of the talent level which is at least as good as Dan's plus his regular season and playoff experience. If Matt has an injury that takes him out of a game or two then Rex should be able to fill in as our starter without missing a beat once he has a few more weeks with the offense.

1. I like Grossman because of the decisions he makes. Off one series? Maybe, sorry if thats all I have to go off of. So far I'm not impressed with DanO but I see him flourishing late. I like Rex, and I never brought up the end zone thing. If anything thats old news to me.

Rex does get it out quicker than Dan. The problem I have with Rex is he tries to throw downfield bombs like every other pass. Thats exactly what got him in trouble in Chicago. I'll like him to learn to read the defense more and find the open man and pick them apart. Not just wait a couple seconds and then throw the bomb. If Matt goes down this year Im gonna have a heart attack, cuz neither of these guys makes me comfortable.

three-year, $9.15 million contract with a $2.4 million signing bonus
There is some savings there over the 2nd and 3rd year.
Grossman is on a 1 year contract, if you gave him #2, you'd have to extend him for more money, so there goes the savings.

You dont extend him crap, we took him off the not wanted by anyone list. He maynot even see the field this year as a #2 so why pay him more?
you need to read the post I was replying to in order to understand. If you claim you save money in year 2 and 3 by cutting Dan, then you have to resign Rex as hes only on a 1 year deal. When you resign him and hes a #2, you have to pay him more.

He continues to impress me. The only negative I see is that he's so aggressive trying to get to the QB, he'll sometime leave his outside coverage and allow the QB to scramble that direction for big gains. It happened several times tonight. He just needs a little maturity and controlled agressiveness.

Agreed. Our whole team (including Mario) has containment issues at times.
But Barwin has done more than i thought he could at his size. His speed is really evening the playing field and he has got some sacks against #1's and #2's so itt's not all against scrubs.

The over-aggressiveness of the young players has left us vulnerable to the screen. It happened a few times earlier in the game.
I've also been impressed with Casey. He catches everything thrown his direction and his blocking ain't bad either. It's going to be a tough choice for Kubs whether to let Jacoby or Martinez go. I really like the way Martinez has been playing and I hope they both can stick. But if it comes down to one, I'd take Martinez.

He does have a lot more experience than Dan O. And in a system like ours, he could be pretty good. Weapons like Andre, Steve, Kevin, Owen, etc. Who did he have in Chicago? Hester? A special teams guy turned wide out.
he has more experience, but also alot of very very poor performances that his defense bailed him out of. I'd like to see him read and throw and get away from tossing bombs. He has a strong arm, but hes got a Favre like mentality when hes under pressure, he just tosses it down field.

Yeah, but they never run the QB sneak in preseason. They try different thing just to see how they work.
True.

they dont even try the dive play much either. Just exotic plays to see what fools the D.

How bad has the defense looked this drive? Bucs just marching right down the field at their own leisure.
I'm seeing some similiarities between Bush and Richard Smith that I don't like one bit.
Also, we bite on every kind of play action known to man. That's sad.

And Harrisson has looked like he needs to go since day one.
they play OT in preseason?

They've picked on Harrisson all the way down the field.

Seriously, think about it before tearing up. Its a bunch of 3rd stringers, do you honestly think Frank Bush is calling anything but base setups?

Great pressure by the defense when the chips were down. Thats what i call a PUSH! Both on 3rd and 4th downs.

3rd stringers or not, they should look better than that. Especially against other 3rd teamers.
We got the win and stood up at the end, but I'd like to see some tighter defense throughout. Not complaining though. Good win.

Very encouraged by what I saw out of Frank tonight. Some missed tackles but lots of penetration, and even still he had some key tackles, including the final one.

And they got there. That was fast! They were in the backfield before the qb knew what to do.

Im only talking about the play calling. Bush isnt going to do anything fancy with that group.

The other reason is Grossman is cheap and if he is #2 there is no reason for Dan to be here. Safe alot of money.....
Kubiak has figured out that if he's going to start Matt, he needs 3 quality QBs on the roster, because each of the past two years he's had to start Sage and bring up Craig Nall or Alex Brink for insurance.
The coaches think they have a playoff team this year and they don't want to be one QB short of getting the rest of the team there.

Over all this was a very encouraging game. The Bucs are a good team and they should have looked better for backups. Our guys were playing much better than teh Saints game. They have improved a lot since then. Each game they have looked better.
I just love Busing! That guy is fun to watch. Great smart player/footballer. Gamey guy!
Game balls-Busing and Grossman.

Agree 100%.
Rex Grossman should be the #2 QB, period, end of debate....Not even a debate.....
I second that, sure he's had ups & downs, but who hasn't.
