View Full Version : Is Slaton a Shoe-In?

I may catch some flak over this, but I'm not convinced that Slaton is the answer to our RB needs. He had an impressive rookie outing, but without the gaping holes in the zone blocking scheme, he could be just another average back. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but so far this pre-season, Chris Brown seems to be the more consistent runner. I guess time will tell.

Slaton always starts slow and finishes big. He gets stuffed in the first quarter then breaks the big ones in the third and fourth. Since he is only playing no more than the first half he isnt getting into his groove yet.

Chris Brown has been consistent???????? He is a good back, but the only game he was really good was against KC. Every running back in the league has gaping holes. But thats not what makes Slaton speacial, It/s the way he takes a hit and keeps on going, his feet never stop moving and his shoulders are always squared up.

How many times have you seen Slaton (even this preseason) get hit at the line of scrimmage and then carry the pile another 4 to 5 yards. That is what makes Steve Slaton a shoe in.

I agree totally, Slaton was the NFL leader in rush yards in 4th quarter last year I believe.

On the other hand, I hope its a preseason thing, but Slaton looks like that weight is affecting his quickness a bit. I hope he retains his explosiveness, BUT to his credit our o line havent opened many holes either, so we will see, I think he will be alright though ( i hope)

I was thinking the same thing. He looks too big and I think that it's had an effect.

Its preseason, why would any running back guarenteed to start put his full effort into preseason running, its not like he will forget how to run faster.

If he runs for under 50 yards against the Jets, you have the right to be concerned but Slaton is the starter because more so then any RB at camp he has proven he should be. Having his most runs against a team with one of the best running defenses around and not doing big numbers is not a big deal.

dude....just sit down and be quiet. the only game he didnt perform well in was the vikings game. the vikings are known for shutting down the running game. the only other preseason game that he didnt do anything in was the one we played last night....and thats only because he wasnt even there.

you are counting your chickens before the eggs have even been laid.

More like he is smashing his eggs before they have been laid.

HAHA, anyways, yes, the Vikes have had the number 1 Run D for the last 3 years STRAIGHT. So of course they are gonna shut us down a bit.

Slaton fits the system. The fact that the line does open holes allows him to squirt through with his style of running. I think that's why he does better as the game goes on, the Ds get tired and the O-Line opens bigger holes.

As far as his extra weight, it is all muscle. The idea is to be able to get an extra yard or two more that he did last year after the first hit. Wether it will help or not remains to be seen.

Its going to be a big one two punch in the mouth this year. Don't be surprised to see Brown get a lot of the load this year. Slaton is still the man, though. The #1 spot is HIS to lose.

what............r...........u............smoking.. ........

I guess with that logic, Barwin should start over Mario because Barwin has been getting sacks?!?!?!

If I may... :-D I would like to see a small portion of your sarcastic logic, and let's keep Mario starting on his side and let C.B. loose on the opposite side. You can experiment how you want with Smith, Robinson, and Frankie-O on the inside.

I think we should also start AJ and Walter at WR, OD at TE, and Schaub at QB! It must have been tough to come up with the idea that we should have Mario on one side with Barwin on the other.

Way to think outside the box!

This thread has presented some valid point and opinions. I never meant that Slaton didn't have the attributes of a quality RB, it's just that it's hard to judge the long-term effectiveness of a RB based on his rookie outing. SS was new to the league and to the oppositions' defenses last year. This year's oppostion now has considerable footage to prepare for his running style and the OL's zone blocking scheme.

I do like the 2nd effort he shows after the initial contact and I hope that continues. I only started this thread out of jealousy I guess, because when I look at guys like Adrian Peterson I tend to fantasize about them being in a Texans' uniform.

But all-in-all I believe Slaton will do well. It's just that we need a solid running game to keep the passing game working. I was a little frustrated though watching the pre-season games where the Texans were trying to set up the passing game with the running game. I believe with the talent the Texans have, it sould be the other way around.

Running backs in general are gambles that can succeed or fail in 3-4 years.

Slaton will probably start for another two years and if he hasn't started the natural RB slide at that time, will backup whichever younger stud is around. Longterm, I doubt anyone expects Slaton to be a starting caliber runner for more then 4-5 years if we are lucky. But for right now, he is the best we have.

Besides, the bigger RBs are not always much more then good. It is rare that you will come across a great, powerful RB, like Peterson or MJD with the speed, necessary to blow guys out or run them over.

Slaton is a great back, that with better line play will get even better. Is he elite, not yet...but looks like he will become that. But, if they see a better RB, they may go after them.
