Ok I was upset when he bobbled it.. but I agree with the call. and Isn't there suposed to be room to catch the ball.. seems like the guy was too close. I think that may have led to the bobble. Does anyone know the rule on this.. certainly you cant be breathing in his face on a fair catch. Any questions about houston being physical surely have been answered!!! GO TEXANS!!

You have to give them a yard and a half is what I remember whether a fair catch or not.

From what I know of the rule when the receiving players calls for a fair catch he must be allowed the opportunity to catch the ball without interference until he either makes the catch or the ball hits the ground.

If is bobbled and it hits the ground it's a live ball but if the defender touches the ball or player before the ball is on the ground it's ruled interference.

I don't think there is a "halo rule" anymore it's just a judgement call on the part of the ref as to what constitutes interference but I might be wrong on that part.

maybe, I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure if that guy wasn't in Jacoby face he would have caught it before it hit the ground, but the 15 yards was a nice bonus, we were tape delayed and paused after that so most of you were just furious at Jacoby for 2-3 minutes I had to wait like 10-15 (thinking we just lost the game on that play) thank god for DVR's but trying to keep little kids amused and watching a game can be tricky

Psychological game. Fisher's no dummy. He knew at some point, even if he had forgotten that part of the rule, that it was the right call. But if you can use it as motivation, you keep mum about it.

Didn't work, in the grand scheme, either way, but still...

We are very luck the rule is what it is. I bet the rule may change next year.

If that were to happen to us, we would all be saying the rule needs to be changed.

It is a DUMB rule!!!!!!!....... We got lucky!

I agree, I thought that was the game right there, I doubt they change it though because then players will be getting in the person face trying to make them drop it, they need to be given their space.

I was so glad that he let the next punt just land on its own.

If you are annoyed by another JJ thread, why don't you just not open the thread...simple isn't it

Since a player can't advance the ball on a fair catch I think the rule is to prevent the receiver from having the ball snatched from his grasp as he tries to fair catch it.

3rd JJ thread

3rd most recent JJ thread, including the original from last year, it would be the fourth. Of course, that is not counting all the many JJ complaint threads that have popped up since he took the field in his first regular season.

HOUSTON (AP)—Houston Texans wide receiver Jacoby Jones(notes) has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated over a 2008 traffic incident.

A judge in Houston on Tuesday ordered Jones to spend one year in a new diversion program for first-time DWI offenders.

Jones must attend alcohol education classes in the yearlong program that includes placing an alcohol detecting device in his vehicle. Completion of the program could lead to dismissal of the case.

Jones was in his car but stopped in a downtown Houston traffic lane when he was arrested on March 16, 2008.

Jones says he made a mistake and learned from it.

The judge should have just suspended his sentence and stated it would be enforced should Jacoby Fumble or Fail to catch another ball.

The rule as stated during the game, is that when a fair catch is signaled that player has the right to catch the ball without interference from another player until the ball hits the ground or he catches the ball. He did not catch the ball, therefore it was not a fumble. He called for a fair catch, therefore he had a right to catch the ball until it hit the ground. He bobbled it, a lot of players bobble it and get it back. The player in front of him interfered by catching it when Jacoby still had a chance at the ball, and therefore it was ruled interference. Now, had he not called for the fair catch the Titans would have full rights to it. Since he did, it was a good call and Texans ball. Thank God...

This is a good rule, otherwise guys would be running up on the catcher trying to scare him into bobbling the ball. It's a natural reflex to brace for impact and that guy was about to run into him.

The rule will not change.

I agree with the rule.

However.. it's a little known rule. Now that it's been publicized a bit do you guys foresee someone using it to their advantage, say like on a bobbled FC? Instead of trying to catch it, just knock it into a defender and get the ball plus 15 yards??

As long as you give a legal FC signal, what's to stop someone from doing a quick catch throw, like in basketball on last second shots? You just have to make sure the ball touches the defender before it touches the ground and fake it good enough for the refs to think it's legit.

This may stop defenders from getting too close and trying to intimidate on FCs.

Comments?

No, I don't think this will happen. It's a good point. However, anyone who tries this is out of their right mind. It's very dangerous. If they make one little mistake, and the ball hits the ground or it ends up being a fumble, the other team will have the ball deep in the receiving team's territory. This is the kind of rule that should be kept the way it is. All it does, is makes the player who is giving the fair catch have more confidence that he will catch the ball. It gives him some breathing room, and allows him the opportunity he deserves. Also, the defender HAS to touch the ball for the rule to come into play. The player can't just bobble it to where it touches the other player, the player would have to actually make a play for the ball. So there just isn't any way I see this playing out.

he could also be bobbling the ball and run into the defender as well...

all that has to happen is the PR or the ball touches a defender before the ball touches the ground.

The defender isn't required to make a play on the ball. He just has to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Even if it was a requirement, isn't it a natural reaction to try and catch something when it's thrown or bobbled into your lap?

I don't think there is a space rule per se, just as long as you don't touch the PR or the ball before the ball touches the ground so guys already get right in the grill of the PR. I can see some desperate teams trying this.
Well, if it is the way you say it is, then the teams will be aware of it and they will try to avoid it. Perhaps they will give the defender some time to catch the ball, rather than running up there and giving them no space at all. I would think that if the rule is how you say, it would be changed after a few times. In my eyes, the defender would have to actually make a play on the ball or slap the ball or do something intentionally. If he was just at the wrong place and the wrong time, then that rule would need to be changed.

You could be very right about this, but if so I think rather than teams trying to do this to desperately gain yards, other teams would just fall back when a FC signal was made. I guess only time will tell, but until then it's a good discussion. :)
