View Full Version : Criticial thinking - QB position
After today's loss, I want to go over the positives and negitives as I see them. I will start with QB and every day cover a position to let you all hear my side of them, and get your side. Today - QB's, tomorrow is going to be O-line and so on.
QB - Matt Schaub:
Matt is a good QB, but not a great one. He has moments of easy passes sailing above peoples heads, right to just turn around and place the ball perfectly in double coverage. He seems to every once in awhile "set" on who he is going to throw too, even if it is a bad decision. When he reads the field, for the most part, he does see open recievers and can get the ball to them with a decent amount of power. His pro's include decent coverage reading, decent field reading, good arm strength, and willing to take a hit. His bad is he sometimes hangs onto the football way too long, He has no clue how to throw a ball away to avoid the sack, sometimes tries to make very risking throws for no reason, sometimes locks onto recievers, and does suffer injuries. Rating B-

You forgot to say he's not very mobile.

To be honest I think the pass to Dressen today took him by surprise. Kinda like when a receiver sees a lot of open field when hauling in a pass and then drops the pass because he took his eye off the ball anticipating a huge play. I think Schaub today was so suprised that Dressen was that wide open and the emotion of tying the game and scoring 28 points in minutes excited him a little much and he rushed it. Just my thoughts on today

I agree with the assessment that Schaub holds onto the ball too long. Either Shanahan is calling plays with definite receivers in mind or Schaub isn't looking for another receiver. Every time we play a QB like Warner the announcers detail how many different receivers they distribute the ball too.
The Texans spend the first half trying to force the pass to AJ or maybe Daniels. In the second half when the play calling included more receivers we were able to move the ball and score points. Is that the QB or the play calling? The O line does a good job of pass protection overall but at times Schaub seems unable to read any route besides the primary route.

BOTH his feet were OFF the ground when he released that last pass. There was no reason to jump like he did, unless he saw Dressen too late and was afraid to miss the open man. It was inexcusable to miss such an easy pass. He was late delivering the out/interception as well because it was his third read if you look at the replay. NEVER throw an out as the third read. Schaub lost this game and then he didn't state that in the remarks after the game. HE should have taken ownership of this loss. He will lose the respect of his team if he hasnt already.
He had a lousy first half where his timing was poor like it is all the time at the beginning of a game. He screwed up that out pattern and he over threw Dressen.
He lost this game.

Matt is a real good backup IMO, his lack of mobility and his tendency to under throw balls are his biggest concerns. Next on the list would be holding onto it too long, which leads to him getting hit and injured.

Oh really? So I guess the 24 first-half points against Tennessee and 21 first-half points against Jacksonville were figments of the imagination. The first half yesterday was on everybody, not just Schaub. And that includes the special teams for the blocked field goal. Schaub did not lose this game any more than the offensive line lost it for being unable to mount any type of running game or the receivers lost it for struggling to get open in the 1st half, or the defense lost it for being unable to hold Arizona in the first half. Quit being a brat and deal with the loss like a man.

Did no one else see the Cardinal defensive player standing between Schaub and Dressen? Or the ones closing in on Schaub or how about the four gunning it toward Joel?
I will say this, upon looking at the highlights again, Matt probably could have dumped it off to Leech but even he had a man on him before Schaub took the shot. Maybe a pump fake would have worked, but we will never know.
Check out the highlight video 3:02, you see while Joel was open he had a bunch of Cardinals right in front so throwing a low pass would have risked another turnover.

Matt needed to square his shoulders and make a touch pass to Dre, put some air under it and lead him more towards the corner. "Great players make great plays". Yes I saw the defenders but it could have been done, but he was in panic mode and rushed it, plain and simple. If he hadn't thrown the pick 6, things would have been a little different eh?

So he takes no sacks yesterday despite the pressure, but he holds onto it too long. He over throws a few receivers yesterday but he "underthrows" it. Your "underthrowing" argument is from last year, that hasn't been an issue this season. Some people find a QB who sits in the pocket and keeps his eyes down field a good thing.
Some of you are freaking nuts. The man has a 97.9 QB rating, 10 TDs and 4 INTs, has thrown for 283 yards per game, and he is a "backup QB". The Texans have the 3rd worst rushing attack n the NFL, mind you, 2nd worst if you go by yards per carry.

Actually he under throws and throws late... the pick 6 was too late but if you watched the game, you'd see he under throws it. His first pick of the season was under thrown to AJ, I think he needs glasses/contacts.

Yeah, lately he has under thrown a lot of passes. I mean yesterday was the first time he managed to get a successful lateral pass to AJ and we've done that play at least 3 or 5 times.

I've got something on the qb position that I've been pondering....IF Schaub is the answer at qb according to Kubiak....why isn't he trusted to call audibles at the line if he sees a defense that a play isnt going to work agaisnt????

Schaub does alot of things well. No question. But, yesterday, that play on 3rd down at the end was not a difficult pass. He simply didnt set his feet and he panicked and overthrew it. Also, he was late delivering the ball on the interception. Those two plays were critical and have to be made.
I like what Schaub does most of the times but occasionally he makes really bad decisions or throws..all you have to do is read Kubiak's lips on the fourth down where he threw it way too long for Dre and into double coverage. Look at the replay, he had our fullback to the left flat for an easy first down and he had the tight end for an easy first down to his right. We needed a first down there, not necessarily a touchdown. I assure you that when the play was called, someone told Matt that if the TD is not there, then dump it off. If you couldn't see the frustration on Andre's face when he under threw that wide receiver screen play then take off the battle rose colored glasses. That was another horrible pass. He also missed OD on a pylon pattern and then again missed on the timing on a double move to Andre in the endzone. All plays that were there and a pro has to make.
I am a realist. Schaub does alot of things well, but he had the biggest hand in losing that game and he should have told his teammates it was on him and he didnt.
