This poor start to 2009 is on the coaches, players AND the front office. The season is slipping away fast and yesterday’s game is a microcosm of what is wrong with Houston football:
Poor play calling: 3rd and inches and your trying to run off tackle....WRONG!!! You have a QB who is 6'5....Sneak or at least go up the middle with your full back or Casey or someone with some size!! 4th down and 1 you don't throw 30 yards into the end zone. Get the first down or take the 3. STUPID Play calling is not something that should be acceptable from Kubiak. If young Shanahan can’t call a better game, Kubiak better take back the play calling before he loses his job. If we get three at the end of the first half; instead of tied at 21 in the fourth QTR, we're up 24-21 and can control the ball instead of throwing an interception.
Poor play: If you think Chris Brown is the answer as power back you’re fooling yourself. We don't have a power running game and we need one. Send your first round pick to Minnesota (Chester Taylor) or Baltimore (La'Ron McLain) and get a big back. The only thing your drafting is linemen in the first round anyway and you can get that in the second round.
Stop beating yourself: Fumbles and INT's are killing this team. Let’s not forget that the inability to get one yard is embarrassing. (See "Big back" above)
Winning attitude: This team still does not know how to win and right now there's no one on the team who has ever been a winner. It's an attitude that we do not have. All we know about is mediocrity. It's time to find a free agent next year that's been to the "Big Game" or at least on a winner who’s been in the playoffs and can lead this defense. We're facing another 8-8 (at best) season because we don't understand what it takes to win. Time for Richard Smith to pull his head out of the "sand" (you know what I really mean) and go get a leader for this team. Several years ago when Reggie White went to Green Bay he turned that attitude around. He understood what winning was from Philly and brought that to Green Bay. We need to find that either from a free agent next year or inside the alleged "heart" (which I don't see) of a current player. Right now it’s the blind leading the blind out there and there’s no direction for the defense. Mario needs to get a mean streak and stop the nice guy garbage. Every once in a while a “roughness” penalty is valuable. Sends a message that we’re not here for fun.
