View Full Version : I know it is time to move past the Arizona game...

but I had a couple thoughts yesterday.

1) Why is Andre Johnson not on the field for the last 3 offensive plays of the game. I realize we were in a goal line set but for goodness sakes....go double tight and flank him out....at least it takes another defender out of the box and gives the threat of the jump ball (which I think we should have tried at least one time).

2) Would it be such a horrible idea to put an extra lineman at fullback and put Vonta Leach at tailback in that goal line situation and see what happens....I don't think I have EVER seen Vonta Leach go backwards when he has the ball.

I'll hang up.....let me have it!

1. It is hard to get a pass off in the end zone when you are that close. They could have tried to do something else with him but the safer play technically is to take your bigger RB and pound it in. Although, given our current offensive line woes, I doubt if we have 3-4 downs at the one, we will do what we did in Arizona again and go for it twice with Brown.

2. I don't remember Vonta ever being handed the ball. They usually pass it to him but I am assuming that while Vonta has the power to push a pile, they don't want to risk him being injured or fumbling without a lead blocker which is usually his own role. Also they trust Chris Brown, which so far hasn't gotten us a lot but unless he fails to get one yard in another game, he is probably still going to be our "Power" back.

hindsight is 20/20 and if the game plan works, the coach is a genius, but if it fails he's needs to be fired.

It's not the coach's fault that players don't execute.

The less risky play is the dive play. The more risky play is a pass, maybe a play action then a corner jump ball. The coach took the less risky option. He had to pick something.

Since the players have sort of proven that they couldn't get one yard on 4th down, at least 3 times, the Coach should consider different options from now on. Maybe change the personnel in that situation.

If he wants to slam the ball in the end zone, maybe he could utilize a bigger stronger player... I think Brian Cushing could slam his way into the end zone.. I'd like to see it.

The Bears used to use the Fridge... and people went backwards when he hit the line. It made him a big big star. Literally.

1. While it's hard to get a pass off, many other teams do this with success. Hell, Mike Vrabel (He plays defense guys-none of our guys can do this?) scored yet another TD this past weekend from a goal-line pass. Our guys (better yet...our coach's) seem to just run the same play over and over again with little success. Branch out....try something new. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't. However, when you're running game at the goal-line is SO weak and the other team knows that, it's generally not hard to stop.

Kubiak said he doenst play 'Dre on goal line situations because he doesnt want him blocking 240-260 lb LBs. He didnt say it exactly like this but "it would be a dumb move on his part to put him out there telling him to block".

I really think either Mario or cushing might be the answer to having a big RB on the we need 1 yd situations. maybe even pull two people and have one block for the other. I bet we would get that yard significantly more often than we do now.

Which is why you put him out wide! No opposing coach in his right mind is going to put a D-Lineman or LB'er on AJ and expect to win that battle.

I read these posts and I got to tell ya'll if you summarize them they all same the same thing the play calling has to change. Kubiak doesn't want AJ blocking!?, Well niether do I throw him the ball. Throwing the ball is riskier !? Sanchez and Henne both threw for TD's within the 3yrd line last night, but Schaub can't? Kubiak is drinking from a tainted fountain that makes him Think he's right. We have not been successfull in short yardage for two years and Kubiak STILL thinks it's fixable, and he's right CALL DIFFERENT PLAYS. Our best offense is our passing offense, make the other team keep 5 DB's back to cover AJ,OD,Walter, and then pass run whatever atleast you'll have an advantage over a D that, for once, doesn't know what's coming.

You got that right!

Did any of you guys notice that last night Sanchez, being a rookie, is allowed to call audibles but Kubs doesn't let our starting QB do that?!?

Edit: Oh and watching the Texans come back and play stellar ball in the 2nd half just to lose with the inability to score from the 1 yard line with 3 missed opportunities was like masturbation without the payoff...

I was just about to make that point as far as audibles are concerned. You beat me to it! Is Kubiak that terrified of audibles that he thinks it would ruin his awe-inspiring game plan?

Yeah running those up the middle plays that don't work the first time so let's do it again game plan is working so well for Kubs...:p

But seriously though, they gotta do something different because I told my GF exactly what was coming on that play and the Def and everyone else that was watching knew what was coming. If you're gonna challenge a Defense like that then have an Oline that can open a **** hole!

Ive got a new take on it...

why cant we do a double tight end set with 1 WR and our two backs in the game??

They would have to cover and be aware of the TE's leaking out, a WR out wide takes another out the box and still having two backs in the backfield (vonta leading and casey behind him is what I would prefer)

or we can try some sort of wildcat formation since we do have the personnel to do it...

Haha Cushing as our goalline back would be great, if he could do it. If not, why not just put in the big #86 and let him be our goal-line QB?

He could run the ball in, hand it off on a misdirection, or even toss it for a quick strike to someone like OD or AJ.

Remember, the man would've STARTED AT QUARTERBACK had he returned to Rice this year. Somebody please get this man the ball!

I moved past the loss on Sunday. It's a joke to get so worked up over this team.
