AJ has blazing speed, but he's not going to be returning kicks or punts anytime soon.
Jerome Mathis has crazy speed, but he can never stay healthy.
There is talk of using Jacoby Jones in the return game. Okay, but he has mid-4.5 speed...not ideal speed for the return game.
Bottom line...we desperately NEED a one-trick pony on this football team that solely handles kick returns and punt returns and can STAY HEALTHY!!
Dexter Wynn is our safest bet as of right now.
Does anyone else think it'd be a good idea to give CB Terrence Roberson a shot in the return game?

Just adding some info on the subject. Speed and experience.
Dexter Wynn 4.53 - Returned 73 kickoffs for 1,967 yards (26.9 avg.) and two touchdowns and had 91 punt returns for 1,385 yards (15.2 avg.) and a score … Joined Mississippi State's Tony James (1,332 yards on punt returns and 1,862 on kickoffs, 1989-92) as the only players in NCAA Division I-A history to gain over 1,250 yards on both punt and kickoff returns in a career.
AJ 4.30(agree)
Jerome Mathis 4.28(agree) - He also returned 62 kickoffs for 1,648 yards (26.6 average) and six touchdowns. Only Terrance Patrick (1,814, 2000-03) gained more yards on kickoff returns in Hampton annals. He also gained 47 yards on two punt returns. His six returns for touchdowns broke the NCAA career record of five, held by Kerry Hayes of Western Carolina (1991-94), Ryan Zimpleman of Butler (1997-99) and Lamont Brightful of Eastern Washington (1998-01).
Jacoby Jones 4.49 - Jones started all 43 games that he appeared in at Lane. He caught 200 passes for 2,750 yards (13.8 avg.) and 21 touchdowns while rushing 22 times for 147 yards (6.7 avg.) and a score. He returned 49 punts for 548 yards (11.2 avg.) and a touchdown, adding four scores on 91 kickoff returns for 1,937 yards (21.3 avg.). He also completed all three pass attempts for 105 yards and a touchdown, recorded seven tackles (six solos) with an assisted sack for minus-8 yards and blocked three kicks. He finished his career with a school-record 5,380 all-purpose yards
As far of Terrence Roberson I'm afraid I dont know who he is.

The hope is that Jerome Mathis is both healthy and also 100% committed to being a professional football player. I read on the All access thread that Jerome's name had stars all the way across it on his weight room chart. THAT, is a great sign.
I think putting 2 guys deep would possibly cause some confusion for the coverage teams on kick offs, especially if we can have Jacoby and Jerome back there. And yes, Speed is where it is at, just watch some of those returns Mathis had, BOOM, he was gone.

speed and you have to have great instincts and vision. I really hope Mathis will get his head out of his @$$ and grow up. IMO I think Mathis realized Kubes isn't going to put up with his crap anymore, but he also said he wasn't going to just be a return guy, either he would prove to him he could be a receiver or he was going to get let go. Mathis better realize that the talent he has better be put to good use, I think he is now. I was glad to hear that he had the stars on his chart lets just hope he translates it to the field.

Is everyone forgetting Andre Davis?
Holds the school's all-time records with 872 yards and a 15.8-yard average on punt returns (55) … His four punt returns for touchdowns tied a Tech record first set by Frank Loria (1965-67) … Added 218 yards on 10 kickoff returns (21.8 avg) and 121 yards with four scores on 11 carries (11.0 avg).

actually he first hurt it in the pro bowl then he re-injured it in the crash, then the following season.

Watch for Hammond from Detroit. He has the SPEED and is in trouble as they are stacked at receiver(over flowing to the return game) plus Sherman is familiar with him!?

610Am was talking about Mathis yesterday. Said he has gained size, and looks almost like a RB now. Plus, he stole an idea from Mel Gray(remember him?), he now drinks water like crazy. Gray got the idea from another player when he got into the league. After he started drinking a ton of water, he never had hamstring(Mathis big problem) agian.
And yes, Davis has good speed, but I think we will keep 5 WRs.
AJ
JJ
Walter
Mathis(unless someone outshines him)
Meaning, who will be the 5th? Davis maybe. Or will Davis be PS, and if he was to be told PS would he want released?

you usually dont have a single KR/PR guy, and the reason is they are 2 different animals, a kick returner is a speed/vision/angle skillset. a PR is a quickness/agility/lateral movement skill set, and he also needs to be able to bounce off/away from contact. the coverage people on punts are in your face imediately, you have to make quick moves, avoid the initial contact, kinda like a running back. Mathis doesnt take the hits so good, but man can he see the field and make the angles. not alot of lateral moves required for KR. just speed and more importantly vision. we do need a better punt return guy, we blew it a couple times last year from poor returns on punts. the whole question with mathis is will he give 100%, if not, he will prolly be gone. I hope not, I think he is the best KR in the NFL.

This quote from Kubiak doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence Mathis will be here. Hopefully I'm reading it wrong. Hamstring issues are occurring already too.
“He has been out here everyday, he’s practiced everyday, he had some issues with tightness today, but our football team is very competitive right now and the good thing is that our football team is going to be tough to make and I think Jerome sees that going on and it’s important that he’s out here.”
