View Full Version : PFT Hints Okoye a Bust

The 20-year-old rookie from Louisville received plenty of hype in the run up to the draft. But the opinion of some is that he is undersized and not strong. As one source said, he's the "creation of a good P.R. campaign," and "there's no way he's a first-round pick."
If Okoye falters, he'll be the third first-round pick on the Texans defensive line that has underachieved, including defensive tackle Travis Johnson and defensive end Mario Williams.
Just found it a bit amusing that there's already talks of this going on. I hope you guys found it as funny as I did!

I've been worried about him myself...I wasn't too big on a smallish DT that only had one good year in College...his grade coming out of the draft was mostly on spec. I think its way too early to label anyone anything at this point though.
The Texans have leaned towards workout wonders at the top of the draft.

anyone labeling Okoye a bust at this point in his career is delusional. There's NO way possible to tell if he'll succeed in the NFL with only one training camp and one preseason game under his belt.
Every profile on him says he has great strength. All of a sudden he doesn't? Strength seems to be one thing you're sure of when you draft somebody. I don't expect anything out of him anyway since he is a rook DT and even Tommie Harris took a couple of years to become dominant. Still though that makes zero sense. The reality is though d-line has the biggest bust probability. I guess that is why someone might write something like that so they can say I told you so and ask for a raise. Who else in the top half of the draft would you deem bust probablity besides Okoye or Ginn?

he has been getting pushed around a lot in camp from what I've been told

So what is it in German? :)

Im not worried about Okoye. He isnt that small for a DT, he is 300+ pounds and 6'2". It isnt surprising that he is getting pushed around right now though, dude is 19 years old. This was a long term investment, which is a good decision for a rebuilding year. Okoye will be alright, but maybe we shouldnt line him up next to the undersized Babin. Id like to see what happens when we put him and Mario side by side.

I think he is a bust! Matter in fact, majority of Texans first draft picks are a bust. (Mario, Travis, Carr and Okoye).
So is Andre.
I think he's a bit overwhelmed at the moment, which isn't surprising, and about 10 lbs less than the 302 lbs where he's being listed.
He needs upper body work and it may take a year to see the benefits of an NFL strength and diet program. I think he'll be okay but I think those who are expecting to see the next rookie of the year in 91 may be disappointed.

Now that TJ is in his third year and back in the 4-3, what are the odds that he can win the starting spot, considering that Okoye is very young and still developing? Would Kubiak consider this option if TJs play warrants it, or is Okoye another case of "this guy is the unquestioned starter regardless of performance"?

Is the guy a "bust" because he didn't live up to the hype?
Or is it really more accurate to say that the scouting dept., coaches, and GM all screwed up because the didn't do their homework sufficiently and picked a guy based on hype rather than their own observations?
And is the fan base a bunch of stupid sheep because the buy into all the Mel Kiper types and their so-called expertise?
I guess its easier to blame one guy, the player, than to admit that maybe the larger group, the draft "experts", scouting dept., coaches, GM, and fans too, were all wrong about him in the first place.
He's not "the bust". They are for building him up before he's played a big league down.
This is only a 'story' because of Mario, TJ, Babin, and the money they paid Weaver. But Amobi has played one preseason game so I think it's a little early to whip out the label machine.

I was being sarcastic since the guy I quoted said Okoye(who only has 1 preseason of experience) is a bust. He was going overboard and so was I.

The Texans have the worst college scouting department probably ever..
They screwed up with the Mario pick..
and they screwed up bad with this Okoye pick...
I dont know if Okoye will be a bust...but theres two things for sure...
He didnt deserve the 10th pick..
And he wont be able to contribute for a couple of seasons...
we needed IMMEDIATE impact...
I wanted to draft Revis, Carriker or trade down and draft Nelson...
but as Vinny stated earlier...I think when it comes to 1st round picks, the Texans take combine numbers into consideration...moreso than ACTUAL production...
and yeah it is very telling Okoye...for Petrino...to skip over Amobi and draft an unknown commodity in Anderson..

They have a Pro-Bowl DT (who actually got hurt after the draft) and lost their best DE in the offseason. Petrino took a need.
BTW, all the coaches went to the combine and took a good look at every player. Okoye was ranked #1 on the Texan's defensive board for a reason. Anyone questioning/labeling Okoye as a bust is ridiculous at this point.

Oh yeah...lets blame it on preseason..for sucky performances...is that the standard cliche for suckiness now a days?
I just dont think a 19 year old kid...who wont make an impact for this team for at least the next 4 years is a need...for a team who IMMEDIATELY needs defense..
Hes getting overpowered, and beasted...these 2 preaseason games..while Carriker (who everyone knew) would be an immediate impact...is actually living up to his hype..
I dont KNOW if Okoye will be a bust..
Im all for drafting defense, but I dont think he was a right fit for THIS team

You're smoking crack. Demeco Ryans, Owen Daniels, Charles Spencer, and now what looks to be at least Jacoby Jones. Defensive lineman is probably the hardest job to transition into, and the fact that the entire defense switched to 4-3 last season does not make Mario a bust yet. Okoye does not have a large enough sample size to be labeled a bust. TJ yes I can see your reasoning there, and Babin yes as well.
Still, you are smoking crack.

Demeco Ryans...great find
Owen Daniels...good find
Charles Spencer...what exactly did he accomplish last season?
Mario...wont be a star...probably wind up being solid (write that off as a bad pick)
Okoye..hasnt shown squat...and wont contribute this season
So count that up...Demeco, AJ, Dunta, Demeco...and Owen..
ooooo....5 total servicable players we've found out of 5 drafts (7 rounds)....excellent huh?

David Carr was the #1 rated player on their board too...so go figure. It's too early to label Okoye a bust....way too early, but he sure didn't help himself today either.

First off, if you think Ric Smith and Gary Kubiak has made the picks for the first 3 drafts that you are referring to, then no.
Second off, Okoye won't show squat because he's playing on the defensive line. It's fairly obvious that he has to show something now because you are a mindless espn fanatic who wants to be Mel Kiper Jr's hair dresser. So we take out the first 3 drafts of the 5 you just named because those people aren't here with us anymore and look what we have.
2006
Spencer - Reliable rookie starter who got hurt in a freak accident.
Winston - Reliable back up who will eventually make the starting line
Ryans - DROY
MW - Reliable starter on D-line who may blossom into special player depending on who you ask
Lundy - Serviceable backup RB
In one draft year they got at least 4 Reliable or serviceable players and an outstanding find. This year is shaping up to be the same.
If you think I'm going to listen to you talk about Okoye is a bust and you want a Defensive player who impacts now, then no. Sorry to tell you but chances are you're not going to draft a Demeco Ryans every year, and a lot of times, good players take a few years to really get the game down, oh noes imagine that!
Go back to the falcons or cowboys message boards where you can talk up Tony Romo's placeholding ability or Vicks tips on treating dogs right.
(see i can throw insults around in my post and make myself sound angry too)
EDIT: Sorry for the outburst, I just see red when somebody calls me a loser for making homerish statements on a fanboard. Maybe we should get redkoolaid to tell all this stuff to Mario Williams so he'll play harder.
I saw with a couple of quick moves off the snap and he almost had a sack on one of those but the Cards had a dump play called. Overall yeah it looks like he has a way to go. He was held on the Edge TD but it wasn't called. I feel like I'm reaching for compliments considering the jury is already out it seems but seriously, give him some time. I can't fathom all our d-line being subpar just yet considering our past two #1's average 21 years of age. At this point I will remember his trigger like jumps which down the road combined with some experience could be very disruptive. The times he got doubled weren't pretty though but not too many guys blow through double teams.

Anyone who says that Okoye is a bust already does not know what he's talking about. We just drafted the youngest player in the league, its going to take alittle while for him to develope.

Don't look for Okoye to hit his full stride for a couple of years. On the other hand, calling him a bust so early is like the "experts" on NFLN calling Schaub a bust a week ago.
Hopefully, he will be good enough by mid season that he draws occassional double coverage to free up other defenders.

Redkoolaid needs to stop drinking his own kool aid. maybe an alcoholic beverage or two would calm him down.
Okoye has gotten a few good backfield penetrations, and thats all we can ask for at this point (only 2 preseason games, geez). He'll be fine with time.

I think Amobi will be just fine. He is smart and has a good work ethic and the Texans conditioning program will help him. This is his rookie year. Mario got a "pass" last year (from me anyway) because he was learning the speed of the game. He doesn't seem to be very smart or have the natural instincts for the game so I am not sure what they are going to do with him long term if something doesn't click into place. But this is Amobi's thread, not Mario's. However, if the opponent does not need to double-team Mario that makes Amobi's job more difficult. Oh well - welcome to the NFL rook.
