A compliment? From ESPN?? Are they insaine?
HOUSTON -- A few observations on the Houston Texans, gleaned from the team's Aug. 15 practice:
1. Putting Carr in rearview mirror
It took the Texans at least one afternoon to get over David Carr. He may have been the face of the franchise, but in the locker room, he was a nonfactor. Players didn't dislike Carr, but they never felt close to him. When Matt Schaub came over in a trade, he immediately started calling his new teammates. Coach Gary Kubiak has talked about how encouraged he was when he left the office one evening and saw Schaub and several players hanging out in the Reliant Stadium parking lot. On the field, he looks sharp. And the main thing the coaches -- and the beleaguered offensive line -- love is the fact that he gets rid of the ball quickly. Schaub carries himself with a bit of a swagger, and his teammates seem to feed off that confidence. Will it be enough to make fans forget about not drafting Vince Young? Probably not, but I think it's a major upgrade.

yeah ive been noticing ESPN and other sports writers giving houston some props latley, but they still love to throw in the "is it enough to make up for passing on reggie bush or vince young probally not"
p.s.
enough to make houston fans forget we passed on VY or to make ESPN forget they were horribly wrong on who we were gonna pick

It's amazing the influence that Mel Kiper Jr. has on that organization isn't it?
The Texans made him look bad in 2006 and he's making sure everyone remembers who the Texans passed on.

Not if the media keeps bringing it up over and over and over.
Winning more games than we lose in a season will make fans forgive and forget the past five seasons. Well...maybe not completely forget, but how about we just file it away as a distant memory...

i dont see it as we made kiper or any other media outlet look bad with our selection we made ourselves look bad with that pick and will continue to hear about it.. all we have to do is look at marios performance on the field and be reminded of the mistake on draft day

HOUSTON -- Observations from Texans camp:
1. Quarterback Matt Schaub sure seems comfortable in his role as a starter after backing up Mike Vick the past three years. He threw the ball well the days I watched and he appears to have a good rapport with both coach Gary Kubiak and his teammates. This is a guy who called his teammates the day he arrived in Houston after being traded to the Texans. "I did that because I'm a leader of the football team," Schaub said. "I wanted to reach out to the guys and let them know I'm here and we're going to lean on each other." One big difference between Schaub and predecessor David Carr is that Schaub stays around the facility and hangs with his teammates, something Carr did not.
2. When he was with the Texans, Carr took a beating. But the team feels better about the offensive line than it has in the past. Right tackle Eric Winston looks much more comfortable in his second season playing on that side after playing the left side in college. The other tackle would be a concern to me. Ephraim Salaam played well for the Texans last year, but he's been a spinning top at other times in his career with other teams. The Texans need to get Charles Spencer back to play left tackle, but he suffered a serious knee injury last year and isn't close to being back. Salaam nearly got Byron Leftwich killed in a game when he was with the Jaguars. The interior of the line is solid, if not spectacular. But it's certainly a unit that is upgraded over recent Texans lines. "We do things better and they will get better," Kubiak said. Translated: Schaub needs to get rid of the football quicker than Carr did.
3. The heat on defensive end Mario Williams still hasn't subsided. The entire city, it seems, rags on him because the Texans passed on both Reggie Bush and Vince Young last year to take Williams with the first overall pick. That wasn't Williams' decision, yet you'd think it was. He was ripped on local radio this week for his no-sack performance in the preseason opener. Please. This kid will be a 14-sack player this year. He has all the tools to be a force on the outside. Give him a break, please. He certainly looked more comfortable in the practices I watched.
4. The Texans lost starting safety Glenn Earl for the year in their preseason opener. He was an OK player, but he's replaceable. For now, Jason Simmons, a converted corner, will take over at strong safety next to Eric Brown. Simmons, a 10-year veteran, is a feisty player who goes to camp every year with a bulls-eye on his back, yet always seems to stick around. Now he's a starter. There is a chance he could be pushed by Von Hutchins for the job.
5. Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans is a star in the making. He had a sensational rookie year and looks even better heading into this season. Ryans has the speed and range you want in a modern-day middle linebacker. He attacks the football. It would be a shock if he doesn't get to the Pro Bowl this season.

As long as he looked comfortable in practices....
Hey, can we arrange to play all of our games in the practice bubble this year?

Hmmmmm.
what fairy tale land do these idiots live in?
The entire city rags on Mario? BS. The entire sports media rags on Mario.. the fans seem to be the only ones that have have the ability to put 2 and 2 together and realize that Vince Young and Reggie Bush havent been setting the league on fire (despite what the talking heads claim).. and you cannot judge a player on just one..or even two.. seasons.
All that being said.. I am not seeing the "14 sacks this year" thing.. he has looked like a non-factor to me in the two preseason games. He will need more time imo.

14 sacks eh? I like that...
You can thank Vick's dog fighting ordeal, especially the looming guilty plea he's entering, for the pro-Schaub press from the media outlets.
They realize that Houston pulled off a major deal by getting Schaub just before the story on Vick had gone public.
Houston doesn't look stupid anymore, but Atlanta DOES. Expect a lot of "What was Atlanta thinking by allowing Schaub to go for 2 2nd round picks?" from the media outlets. Atlanta will become the new punching bag for the media.

I can't believe no one else has noticed this yet. At least he's aware that Marlon McCree is no longer on the team, although he would be a big help at free safety.

The funny thing about that is, ESPN used to brown nose the dude all the time. I'm not sure if any of you remember but that website that makes the football cartoons (something skins) actually made one of ESPN reporting Michael Vick taking the best dump ever.
Now he is the worse thing that happened to football. Mario and team, just take a look. They can turn on you in a second. Praise will come with better play and staying clean.

I have... You might get him even more fired up if you can't spell his name right... (Dunta Robinson) He is just another product of the new DB U, USC (the real one in SC)

I think he was refering to Dante's Inferno. That is why he also mentions the fired up part. :p
