View Full Version : What is Rick Smith's next move?
I think their pretty much done as well. Picked up some vets, took care of depth situations. Coach Kubiak seems to think Walter has a shot at #2 WR going by what I heard on his OTA interview. I think they feel we pretty much have everyone we need in house and I trust them and their decisions.

Kubiak and Smith have both mentioned they are allways looking for ways to improve the competition and skill level. So I wouldnt be surprised if we grabbed a few more before the season starts.
The next crop of players we could pick from is the June 1st cuts, then after that you are mostly looking at subpar people that get released for the final roster cuts. we don't really need any of those.
I think the rest of the available people might be unsigned vetrans/RFA. ofcourse theres allways a possible trade but I dont see us giving up anything, we are short of picks next year as it is. I think the only real area we have a need is WR or secondary. I think they've done a good job though this year and would be happy if we started the season with what we have if needed.

I heard yesterday on the afternoon talk show that we were possibly in talks with McCardell. Mark V. (I think it was him) said that Berman had mentioned something about the Texans being interested in Keenan. I'm not sure how much truth there is to it. Is there somebody else out there that heard that?

I would be surprised if this were true. Kubes is high on Walter and I think he means it when he says he's going to allow him, and the other WRs, the opportunity to battle it out in camp for that second spot. That makes the most sense to me because the competition is the most important factor in player development.
Bringing McCardell in would undermine all of that. Not to mention, although he's been an elite player in the league for most of his career, he's getting old and that means only a few more yrs of production out of him at a very high price......I'm sure his contract wouldn't exactly be cheap.
I agree that the FO is probably done for now unless a player becomes available that is just too good to pass up and would fit right in with our system. Otherwise I'm pretty impressed with our rookie class and FA aquisitions. I think the pieces are in place for us to have a very competitive team with a lot of depth.

Ah, don't get me wrong. I'm loving the way our off-season has gone. It just caught me off guard hearing that on the radio. I wouldn't be upset going into the season with what we have. Having said that, it wouldn't upset me if Keenan were brought in at a reasonably price either.

I can't see us making any drastic moves either. We don't have a lot of money to play with and I don't see anyone getting cut from some other team that is significantly better than our young prospects. Our F/A, picks, and UDFAs seem to be developing a nice chemistry. Most of them are young & eager or have something to prove or both. I don't see anyone coming available that would have more upside than the guys already in house.

I'm not sure I could get all that excited about Keenan even with a cut rate salary structure..........Last year, he caught 3 passes going for >20 yds (longest 28 yds). And how many TD catches starting 11 games (appearing in 14), on a winning team??????????.....................ZERO!!!!!
I see a deal with AZ -
Weaver for Dansby
or, Babin and TJ for B. Johnson
or both.

I was wondering when a chess move was going to pop up. Surprised it took over 15 hours...

What will the Texans do next, as far as their roster is concerned? Do you think they'll scoop up one or a couple of June 1 casualties? Will they get a player or two in the supplemental draft? What do you think?
Honestly, I don't see any BIG moves upcoming. They may bring in a couple of low-priced June 1 casualties to see what they can do, but for the most part I think they're done with player additions. They're doing this the perfect way and building through young players and not counting on high-priced Free Agents to come in and help make us a winner.
I think we'll have to wait until next year to see any big moves. The season will have to play out and that will determine what happens next. If the o-line still shows problems I'm sure they'll make some pick ups through the draft or free agency next year.

I'm for staying put where we stand now. Unless like mentioned earlier a "can't pass up" player comes available. I trust Kubes and Smith. The upside to this team is "The sky is the limit". With CCC gone (Casserly, Capers, Carr) gone this team is headed for greener pastures. How nice would it be to be the AFC represenative in the SB in North Dallas?

His next move will be getting that Tackle Gathier that is supposed to be entering the supplemental draft that everyone is talking about in the College Forum.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Granted, Rice has been a formidable pass rusher in this league for a long time but he's going into his 12th yr and several "experts" speculate that his skills are declining. Weaver may not be an exceptional pass rusher but he should be effective at the LE spot now that Mario is permanently moving over to RE.

What do they know? They're just average guys like you and me who get paid to run their mouths on national TV.
Also about Weaver, he still has some of his $9.2M bonus that we would take a HUGE hit on if we traded him.
True enough. I have respect for the guys like Merrill Hodge and Ron Jaworski (although I don't always agree with him) because they actually break down the game film. The rest are just giving opinions.
So maybe Rice's diminishing skills are just speculation and opinion, I still think the price tag would be too much to bring him in for only a couple of seasons at the most.
