View Full Version : If we had made that trade with Denver to get back in the second, how would we have changed our draft approach?

Just wondering, as I feel that trade was a missed opportunity.

You speak of "the trade" as if it was actually presented. We don't know what was offered, if anything, behind closed doors. Missed opportunity or not, it's over. Personally, I'm happy with the draft.

Well lets just presume what was in the trade, was what was mentioned in the press on the internet etc:
We gave up our 1st rounder for Denver's 1st and 2nd rounders.

See, I don't think that adds up. If I remember the discussions back during the draft, for everything to add up, we would have had to have gotten more. Like a third this year or a second next year. I think that's what we were asking for but I don't think Denver wanted to give that.
OTOH, I'm not sure they would have pulled the trigger with Amobi on the board. I think it was too much of a surprise to find Amobi there. If we were looking at Levi Brown or Leon Hall, I think we would have pulled the trigger.
I'm happy with our draft, though.

Out of interest what does OTOH mean?
I think with Al Wilson gone they wanted to take Pat Willis and 10th would have been ideal to sneak in just in front of the niners, while we have a need for a Left Tackle and 10 was way too low to take Joe Staley so it would have made more sense to trade down and also get an extra pick.

OTOH = On The Other Hand.
I understand about them needing a LB and wanting Willis and I understand about Staley making more sense at 21 (although personally, I would have preferred Kalil)... but... it doesn't add up.
The 10th pick has a value of 1300 points. The 21st pick has a value of 800 points. Their second round pick was worth 360 points. Their third rounder was worth 150. That would have been about an even trade. Were they willing to make that trade? I don't think they were. I think that's what we asked for to move back and Denver said that it was too rich and then looked around at other options.
And then you've also got to realize that they had Amobi as the best defensive prospect on their board. They think this kid is better than Gaines Adams, Laron Landry, or any of those guys. It's hard to trade out of the 10th spot when you've got a top 5 talent staring you in the face.
