View Full Version : NFL Live on Carr

Just now the guys on NFL Live were talking about Carolina's acquisition of Carr. They seemed to think that he was a good pickup. But the thing that got me was John Clayton, who I thought was smarter than he appeared, rhetorically asking "Why didn't any other team go after him?" Uh, maybe because everyone else wasn't that desperate for a bad QB...
I loved how they mentioned that Carr was a starter. So was Daunte Culpepper, but I don't think many teams would be thrilled to have him right now. Just because someone was a starter doesn't mean they're good. Bruec Gradkowski started several games for the Bucs last season, but I don't think he's heavily coveted because of that.
I know it's ESPN, and Salisbury did openly admit that he's a Carr lover, but still...I thought John Clayton was better.

I love Carr as a QB. He just had no help on the O-Line so he spent his entire career on his back. Now you bring in Matt Schaub who is less mobile without bringing in an O-Line. This will be a disaster. When Carr does get his chance in Carolina when Hasselbeck gets injured as he does every season, David will show what he can do behind a good O-Line. Maybe I am partial as I am from Fresno, and got to see David all the time at Fresno State

Hasslbeck plays for the Seahawks not the Panthers.I too watched David while at Fresno State and the Panthers want him to sit for a year to heal his mind and body.As for the Texans o-line they made some small improvements but I believe not enough.Schaubs mobility I am not so sure he is not mobile. He does have the fire in him to lead this team were as David after being clobbered for five years lost the desire to lead the Texans and so they both had to part their ways. The jury is out on Schaub right now until the season starts and people shouldn't expect to much of him until then but they can hope he is what Kubiak thinks he is.

I don't know why I said Seattle. I always confuse them and Carolina on where Carr went. Jake is injured a lot as well.

The Oline was not responsible for all the sacks. Carr was responsible for his fair share. And DC will probably not ever amount to anything more than a backup.

your not only partial, you are also pretty dumb. hasselbeck plays for Seattle (where he has gone to Pro Bowls and gone to Super Bowl). Delhomme plays for Carolina (where he has gone to Pro Bowls and gone to Super Bowl). Carr has done jack squat in 5 years, yet you think he is better.
your just another dumb carr homer who blamed the rest of the team for carr's multitude of problems. now that carr is gone, maybe you should find another team to root for.

Its understandable to want one's homeboy to succeed. But I have serious doubts about Carr's willingness to learn the position. Carr had a chance to go out to Seattle and learn from Mike Holmgren, you know, the guy who put Brett Favre on the map? OBTW, Holmgren also groomed Steve Young and some dude named Montana. Did I mention that Holmgren took a "whodat" named Hasselbeck and turned him into a SuperBowl QB?
So if I'm a young & talented (note that I never said the boy didn't have good wheels and a strong arm) NFL QB, that's the guy I want coaching me!
But nooooooooooooooooo! Carr choses to go to Carolina.
Carolina?!?
Last time I looked, they had a defensive minded head coach, John Fox - he was the NYG defensive coordinator before getting the Carolina top job.
Now let me think.... isn't that what everyone said hindered Carr's development here in Houston. ...he didn't get proper teaching because he was under a defensive minded head coach that knew nothing about how to groom QBs??
Lesseeeeee... do I go out west and learn from the guy who taught TWO Hall of Fame QBs and one future HoF QB?? Or do I go east and be under a defensive minded coach like I had in Houston?? What to do? what to do?
Like that YouTube piece says, you have to wonder about Carr's ability to make good decisions.

First, ALL QBs get sacked and pressured. Brady, Manning, Favre, McNabb, all of them. Minimizing the number of sacks is up to the blocking and the QB's ability to be smart and realize when its time to either run or throw the ball away.
Second, because Carr didn't know how/when to step up into the pocket, he made the line look worse than it was. Carr was tough, I'll give him that, but he was not cool under pressure. On several occasions Carr could have avoided a sack by stepping up into the pocket. Then there were the times he ran out of bounds behind the line. Or the times he threw the ball after passing the line of scrimmage.
Yeah, Carr did look good in spots. I'll give you that. But if he had put in the time & work to actually learn the position, he could have been soooo much better. Its sad really.

Maybe if you took out the time to learn the game than you could see that many of the problems Carr had during his 5 years with the Texans were not his fault. No, Carr didnt have the best pocket presence, but you say that he should have stepped up into the pocket, tell me how many pro-bowl interior lineman Carr had. Tell me how many lineman the Texans have ever sent to the pro-bowl. Them answer is none. Tell me how many WRs worth a d&^n Carr had. Tell me how many quality TEs he had. Oh and last but certainly not least, who was his coach for the first 4 years of his carrer, yeah thats right Dom Capers. You act like this guy was given all the right tools to make a great transition from the college level to the NFL. You dont believe me, how about listening to a Pro-Bowl WR and his teammate for 4 years .

Andre Johnson:
"From my first year here, I think it was the way he was coached," Johnson said.
"My first couple of years here he was pretty much just told where to throw the ball at, and a lot of people didn't know that. He was never really taught to go through reads and things like that. Once coach (Gary) Kubiak came in, that was his big thing, teaching him how to go through reads. So it was like he was starting all over again."
People expected him to come in and within 1 offseason forget all the bad coaching and retain all that Kubiak had to say. If Schaub does succedd, which I hope he does, it wont be because he is just that much of a better player or because the o-line is protects sooo much better for him. It will be because he was able to sit and learn for the first few years of his carreer with at least decent coaching.

Then why did Carr appear to regress as the season went on? He put up some decent number in the first quarter or so, and then fell off the face of the earth. I know that by the end of the season Kubiak barely let him pass at all, but I think that's because Kubes saw that he was not ever going to be a decent quarterback. I agree that with the right coaching at the beginning of his career he might have been, but he was ruined by Capers' staff (and Casserly's avoiding O-line like the plague), and no amount of Kubiak's coaching was going to undo the damage.

They said he was a good pickup because in the past he was a starter, they didn't say that he was a starter with the Panthers now. Still not great logic in any case. Ryan Leaf started some games, you think teams were clamoring to get him when the Chargers let him go?

IMO, Carr did a decent job in his first 3 seasons, but when Casserly and Capers got rid of the veteran leadership and replaced it with expensive, non-productive loud-mouths the team as a whole started to stink. Carr, himself, didn't crumble during the 2 and 14 season, and his first few games last season weren't bad (a young defense with no chemistry was the problem there). I think there were probably personal issues between him and Kubiak. The coach wanted to start out fresh, so he did waht he needed to do to get McNair's approval to ditch Carr and aquaire a QB that was more open to Kubiak's coaching techniques.
I'm not saying Carr was agreat QB for the Texans, he had plenty of problems. I'm just saying I don't think he was released solely based on his lack of performance or ability.
What he can do with the Panthers is anybody's guess, but then what Shaub will do for the Texans also remains to be seen. Hopefully, both will do well with their new teams, the Texans will have a winning season and we can stop talking about DC and start talking Texans in the playoffs.

The reason that he seemed to regress in the second half of games is because he did. In the second half of games and the second half of the season for that matter he was forced to return to old habits which he had not had proper time to rid himself of. When he got into the second half of games the Texans would usually be down and not always because of him, sometimes because we had no running game and sometimes because our RBs fumbled or because our defense couldnt stop our opponent. At this time teams would begin to pin their ears back and blitz because off his reputation of being an easy sack. Carr for all his toughness is still human and he doesnt like to be hit, he has become shell shocked over his first couple of years and when he saw blitzes he would become flustered and return to old ways. But what do you expect after 4 years of the same stuff.

I agree, the old coaching staff ruined Carr. I just don't think that Kubiak saw any way to reverse his habits while actually trying to build a winning team. Maybe Carr can turn it around elsewhere, but I don't think so; I think that no matter where he goes, he'll be expecting to be hit, and will be nervous and won't be able to make reads.

I had a lot of faith in Carr when the Texans choose him in 2002. As time went on, I saw the light inside him fade. You could see the relief on his face every time we scored a touchdown. It wasn't joy from doing your job right and that to me seemed sad. After 2005, I think he gave up. He had a little bit of hope left when Kubiak came on board, but David had too much catching up to do. David can improvise when he's allowed. But "street ball" the NFL is not. Kubiak wanted a guy in there that was able to understand and stick to the game plan. Carr just couldn't do it for us. It's ok to admit you made a mistake and try to correct it. I have every bit of faith in Schaub as the new QB. And I have every hope that David isn't a completely broken QB. Let's all just move along and stop rubber-necking on the Carr-Wreck that has been cleaned up and towed away.

You probably have a point there. For Kubiak, football was Job One. For Carr, his family came before football. And that difference in philosophy probably led to them parting ways.
