According to Yahoo!, Mark Cuban wants to create a rival football league that well attract more players who are picked lower than Round 2. What's your opinion on this?

I think it will be great if its not like the XFL was. This league needs to be almost if not the same as the NFL. I just want football yearround anyway so it would be great if they played in the offseason somehow.

It won't work because the demand for NFL is so high thats what makes it so profitable.
Plus I think when the NFL discovers the kind of longterm physical damage that occurs from playing football like concussions and stuff. It will be hard to lengthen the season and keep it compettitive like it is now. Plus its talking about 2nd tier talent, Which means it will be like NFL Europa really sloppy play and a no real excitement like the NFL.

I love the idea! More football the better. I hope they keep it very similar to the NFL. This league could have all the guys who were great college players but maybe not great NFL like Jason White from OU, Troy Smith Ohio St, and Eric Crouch. Hopefully, they target the big cities that dont have teams already like Vegas, San Antonio, and LA. I just hope they have the season during the gap between NBA and the NFL.
I am not a huge fan of the AFL because it is so much different from the NFL. I hope the league mirrors the NFL. I can only hope!

I just got off the phone with Donald Trump & Vince McMahon. They think it's a GREAT idea! Hahaha
(btw...that was a joke for the few of you that didn't know Trump was to USFL what McMahon was/is to XFL and WWE)
Kidding aside....I would LOVE to have 2 leagues pushing each other. The consumer ultimately wins.
However...it's just hard for me to imagine that the NFL Machine (and players association) wouldn't somehow thwart this league. Reason being....if there were to be a true "other" league like the USFL threatened to become...that would weaken the NFL players association leverage. Because if they tried to hold another strike down the road....the "other league" players would serve as a suitable set of players.

Just look at MLB....two giant leagues can not mutually co-exist...even with complementary "off seasons".
Need further proof??? Where do you think the terms AFC & NFC came from? Bye-bye AFL...Hello seperate conferences.

Side note....I have to admit that I kinda dig the Arena Football League. Granted...their career-ending-injury rate is freaking NUTS. Players just aren't used to running into the walls AT the sidelines. Hand/Arm injuries are killing careers faster than Dancing With The Stars. Hahha...wait...those careers were already dead. Scratch that.

That would be incredibly hilarious. But he'd still have all sorts of excuses made for his continued bad play, because I guarantee that his line would not be nearly as good as ours was.

I suppose if it augmented the NFL instead of opposed it, like the Continental Basketball League does for the NBA, it might work. Up-and-coming guys could sharpen their skills and see they had what it takes to play with the "big boys". But then isn't that what NFL-Europe is for?
I dunno. Opposing leagues historically have always gotten into bidding wars for the big name guys. I know Cuban says he won't but it always ends up that way. And that tends to water down both leagues, IMO.

And another thing; what network will carry them?? ESPN, Fox, NBC are all tied up. Since the Go network owns both ESPN & ABC do you think they would let ABC carry the competition?
I think Mark's still in deep depression because of what happened to his Mavs.
If you want to throw your money away, Mark, let me give you my account number. Drop a few mil in there, it'll sure make ME feel better.

I'd rather they just expand the teams and add more games.

What a waste of time and money. We already have the AFL, CFL and NFLEurope. You want to see the second tier NFL players, watch the Preseason games.

You aren't very informative. The formation of the league has already been announced.
Its called the United Football League (UFL) and it will began play in August 2008. The league is run by wall street investor, Mark Brembecht and Google Senior V.P. Tim Armstrong. There will be supposedly 8 teams the first year. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Mexico City are the three that have been announced. San Antonio and Orlando are probably getting franchises as well.
Mark Cuban is the first owner of a franchise purchasing the Las Vegas team for 30 million (the required fee for everyone looking to get a franchise)
The games will be played on Friday Nights and will compete against High School and some NCAA Conference USA games. There currentyl trying to get a tv deal with usa, tnt or versus.

They mentioned playing on Fridays. That is one way to get it all to go down the drain. I would say a Wednesday or Thursday would be better.

Thursday night belongs to NFL network starting thanksgiving day.... I just don't see this being a feasible deal nor do I see NFL adding more regular season games.

It may work. Who knows with a ton of cash it could be decent.

And 2nd tier talent was brought up...well the NFL is talking about a smaller round draft, and Tom Brady was a 6th rd pick. So, you could find afew gems in this league...then agian a Brady like player shows up, an NFL team will grab him.

I think it could attract top talent....the salary differences between the first round and the third round are huge. If a player was choosing between third round money and no guarantee of making the team or a potentially higher payday, what's to say they wouldn't go for the bigger check and the chance to show that they can play?

If they really want to get some players, they should get rid of the age limit and get those stud athletes who can't pass college...example? The top RB in Texas isn't even recruited by UT because he wouldn't be able to pass his classes. He can go JuCo or he could go UFL and use it as a ladder to the NFL when he meets their age requirements.

Its not just players, they'll raid coaching staffs too. Some good assistants and trainers could be lost to this UFL thing. And what TV will carry the games? Did they say?

I personnally would love a new league in the "off-season".
I was a major fan of the XFL at the beginning. I was a major Las Vegas Fan. My reason for why it busted was because it became all wrestling. I really like the scramble to start the game, who ever wants the ball first most gets it.
They really shouldn't have done the lame cameraman in the cheerleaders locker room stunt. With all of the build up they gave it, they should have actually made it interesting.
I really hope this new league works out.
