HOUSTON -- Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson ruled out playing against Indianapolis this week as he recovers from a knee sprain.
Asked Wednesday if there was any chance he could play against the Colts, Johnson said: "No. I mean as it looks right now, you look at me right now, no I wouldn't be out there on Sunday."
The news is a major blow to a team that is 2-0 for the first time in franchise history and preparing to face a major AFC South foe. Rookie Jacoby Jones, who has two catches for 33 yards, will probably start in Johnson's place. Second receiver Kevin Walter has just two receptions for 17 yards.
Johnson, who wore a large brace on his injured left knee Wednesday, said he is unsure of when he can return but didn't rule out next week's game.
"I'm taking it day-by-day, week-by-week, and doing everything I can to strengthen my leg so I can be back," he said.
An MRI Monday revealed no damage that would require surgery. Coach Gary Kubiak listed Johnson's official status for Sunday as doubtful.
Johnson sprained his knee during the fourth quarter of the Texans 34-21 win over the Panthers on Sunday. He fell awkwardly on the knee after a 10-yard reception and remained on the turf for several minutes. He walked off the field on his own but was limping on the sideline.
Johnson, who has missed just three games in his five-year career, said being on the sidelines Sunday will be difficult.
"I'll probably be the team's biggest cheerleader," he said. "I'm going to go out and encourage these guys as much as I can."
Johnson had seven catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns Sunday. His 262 yards receiving in the first two games rank fourth in the NFL.

I hate to see a guy injured, but I hope it's a two week injury. :)
hope he recovers 100% right after the Falcons game!

Thats the NFL for ya. People go down and the team has to step up.
If the Texans truely have the fortitude they've shown in the first 2 weeks, i'm not too worried. Game plan will change a little but those guys have to go out to battle together as a team and get through it. Play is if nothing is wrong.

I think that it will be allright, we were able to beat the Colts with Dayne,Carr & Johnson. I think we can get it done with Green,Schaub,Jones & Daniels.

It's going to be a little more difficult to pull off the upset now, but our guys can pull this off! Cheer loudly, whether it messes up Peyton or not!

The most frustrating thing is that if anyone deserves to play in this game, it's AJ, and he's not able to.

Even though its rough, this may be a blessing in disguise. For our team offensively to get to the next level, we need a significant contribution from our WRs other than AJ. I think this will be a good opportunity to see what the others can do, plus it's going to be Jacoby's breaking out party.

What really worries me is that Jones runs bad routes, and can't get open, and has been thrown to more than Walter. You certainly don't want Jones to go accross the middle, you'll be picking up the pieces. You need to have him do what is does best, and that is return the ball. Andre Davis is the man you want to take Johnsons place. (There is nothing like experience, in these cases.
Walter has only been thrown to 2 times in the last 2 games, and granted hasn't moved the ball, however, he does catch what is thrown to him. You also, have to see the position of the ball, when thrown to him. One throw was behind him.

You can't replace an Andre Johnson, but I have faith that we'll be all right. Let us keep in mind that Matt Schaub's presence is as much a factor in the our recently wonderful passing game as A.J.'s. I'm sure that our speedy set of down-roster guys can adequately pick up the slack. If you want to be an optimist, you could say that this oculd be Jacoby's time to shine.

I was actually debating on weather i should pick you guys or the colts in my yahoo pro football pickem, but since andre johnson aint playin that made my choice easy. You guys could still do it, but not having andre is a big blow. Maybe jacoby will step up.

I think there are some cases when young guys are actually the best type to have in a big game situation. Sometimes, certain rookies are confident/naive enough to only take the big game stage as a chance for them to break out. And JJ seems to have that sort of attitude.
Now I'm not saying having that attitude means he is going to break out, but it certainly doesn't hurt. It doesn't hurt to have that brashnees (however misguided it may be) in this situation.

This is good. Not about Andre being injured, but it is good that he will get time to rest and get better. This is by no means a must win game. Its a very good situation for Jacoby to move into Andre's spot and get some substantial time in the offense. I hope our offensive line is ready to dominate, because we could see 40 rushing plays on Sunday. The Colts have a fast defense, so that means for the most part we should run right at them instead of to the outside. All aboard the Dayne train!

Smoke screen, Smoke screen. BSPN reported Eli will be out 4 weeks and he played last week. AJ will be fine, I still believe he will play this week, my fingers crossed though.

Dude every game is a must win. The texans are doing good right now, and every win is important. I know its week 2 but in the nfl every win matters.

every game matters, but there is no way that this is a must win for the Texans. A must win game would be if you were the Saints at 0-2, and you are worried about falling out of contention early. The Texans arent going to go 16-0, nor do they have to. The team is going to lose some games. Losing to the best team in the NFL is perfectly acceptable, its not going to hurt the Texans chemistry or even do much to slow the building momentum. A win would be great, but it is impossible to call this situation a must win game.

Has anyone else noticed that after Sunday people started paying attention and saying how Houston's a contender, and we should be competing with the Colts finally and how well Schaub is playing...
Then Andre's gonna miss this game, and once again we're back to being huge underdogs. As quickly as everybody starting backing us this week, they're backing off. I think Jones has a HUGE load on his shoulders this week, but this is his chance to show us that what we saw during the pre-season wasn't a fluke.
Sure, AJ is our biggest deep threat, but we can still do this without him this week. We're a team, winning and losing as such. Our defense has caused some pressure and huge turnovers. Expect a couple end-arounds and big returns from Jacoby, and lots of dumps to Daniels and a game dominating by us trying to control the ball on the ground.
Huge underdogs... it's familiar territory, at least.
