according to houstonprofootball:
the cap guru has the estimated team salaries for 08 to be $82,638,161. If the cap increases as it has, estimated cap at 116mil, then we're lookin' at 33-34 mil in free money. We do have a few UFA's and RFA's
UFA's RFA's
Adams, Charlie CC BrownAlexander, Roc Samkon GadoAnderson, Charlie Drew HodgdonBruener, Mark Thomas JohnsonClark, Danny Anthony MaddoxDayne, Ron Jerome MathisEarl, GlennHutchins, VonKalu, N.D.Killings, CedricMcCleon, DexterOrr, ShanteeSimmons, Jason Stanley, ChadWeary, Fred Wynn, Dexter

thats a lot of money... are there any big time players up for free agency after this year?
With about $15 million in dead money coming off the cap at the end of this year and no premium FAs to resign (maybe Dayne), it will be the right time for us to make some serious moves. Housekeeping wise, we'll probably give Dunta an extension, but he's our only big name up for UFA at the end of 2008, so that cap space is almost totally usable.
If we can make some noise this year, we'll be in prime position to land a few of those top-tier FAs.
Cap room is good.
Paying guys like Nate Clements $80 million, of which $22 million is guaranteed, has no real upside unless the player goes to the Pro Bowl for at least three years, or is 'the' guy who puts you over the top.
Stupid free agent spending can ruin your team for years. That's part of what we're just emerging from ...

I wouldn't mind seeing Vasher, Polamalu, and Diggs here, would immediately improve our secondary and outside linebackers, oh and can't forget Wilson

Isn't Wilson always injured along with Harrison?
And while Polamalu would be super shweet, I imagine the Steelers will be offering him a lot of money, unless he does poorly and the new coaching staff doesn't think he's a good fit for their system (like that would ever happen).
Vasher's good, but isn't he more of a Cover 2 CB? I thought that we didn't run that system (I don't know what exactly we run, but I didn't think it was the Cover 2).
Terrell Suggs, though, would be nice. Did very well as a 3-4 OLB, and not too shabby as a weakside 4-3 DE - 40 sacks in his career so far. Unfortunately, I imagine Baltimore will scoop him back up (although considering they couldn't keep Adalius Thomas, they might not be able to match an offer for Suggs).

I'd love to see Suggs brought in also, but with as much money as we have tied up in the D-line now I doubt that is likely to happen. But you never know. How awesome would our front 4 be then?

That can't be right because how can we even hope to sign our picks with 2.6 mill?
Let me clarify my statement for those who may have misunderstood:
Having cap room is a good thing.
Meanwhile, consider this the best Texans cap page in the land: http://www.houstonprofootball.com/cap.html

David Akers...that's what we need.
I think we need a punter more than a kicker. Stanley must have pictures of McNair or something.

Hey, that's how the old staff did things. Give big contracts to mediocre free agents who were never good at any time (I'm also looking at you, Todd Wade!)
And could you try to not use 1 or 2 pt. font in the future? The standard 3 pt is much easier to read.

Off this list I would like to see the Texans pursue, Faneca, Josh Brown, Terrell Suggs, and Troy Polamalu
Faneca will be 31 this year so his best years are behind him. Sure, he may have a couple good years left but Eric Steinbach just signed a deal worth $49.5 million including $17 million in guaranteed money and $23 million over his first three seasons. Faneca wants something similar, plus it's his sunset deal so he's at the point where he's as much or more concerned about his financial security (and equity with other highly paid free agent guards) than playing football. The age timing of your free agency and the team you play for can sometimes wreak havoc on good players' finacial futures. Smart teams and tight budget teams like the Steelers and Bills are typically reluctant to pay 10 year vets that kind of money.

Well, with about $33 million in cap space, I can imagine some of the things the Texans can do...
Approximet Salaries I would give
Polomalu - $5.5 million
Vasher - $4.0 million
Diggs - $3.5 million
Suggs - $5.0 million
Fancea - $6.0 million
Kerry Colbert - $4.0 million
That amounts to $28 million, would immediately improve OL, secondary, give us another great DE, and a good receiver, plus leave us with about $5 million to sign our draft picks, but I could only wish

But is Troy Palomalu a good enough cover safety for our system?
He is a beast playing the run, but I can't seem to think taht he would struggle a bit in the 4-3?
Maybe I'm wrong?

Polamalu is going to be heavily pursued, I doubt he'd come here; if he did, we'd have given him way too much money. But I would like him here.
Isn't Vasher more of a Cover 2 CB? Don't know how well he'd work in our system.
If you are talking about Na'il Diggs, I don't really know much about him. If he'd be an upgrade at SOLB, then sure.
Suggs would be nice, he's a very good pass rusher (his numbers dipped a bit after he changed to DE from OLB, but they were still pretty good).
Faneca's too old for what this team is trying to do. I think we need to get younger on the OL, not older, plus I don't know how well he'd work in our system. That and the fact that Kubiak seems to want to build our OL through the draft.
Colbert had an okay rookie season and has since disappeared. No thank you. Same with Michael Clayton, even though he wasn't listed.

Suggs and Troy will be franchised. Fancea is to old and kerry Colbert isn't worth 4.0 million dollars.

Anyone know how Wong's retirement will affect the Cap room?
Samer
05-20-2007, 10:05 AM
Fancea maybe a little older but still got some mileage in him, yeah I know, age wise, he isnt what the Texans are going towards but he still could provide valuable time and experience and leadership to the younger lineman, which I dont think anything is wrong with
Anyone know how Wong's retirement will affect the Cap room?
Probably won't affect it at all, unless they are able to spread his ~ $3.6 over two years.
Kailee's '07 cap figure and his dead money are basically the same so if they take the entire hit in '07, it will be as if he's still on the team capwise.
btw, it's Faneca ... pronounced FAN ick uh
