so, the verdict is in, jacksonville was 4,000 tickets short of having their game on television....we, the loyal texans fans, still get to view the game. its sad when you cant even sell out a home game against a division rival...

Jacksonville has had this problem for years. The general consensus points to the Jaguars being in a small market as the main problem. Others say it's because they haven't won a Super Bowl...
I've heard at least 6 or 7 reasons from different sportswriters as to why the Jags have attendance problems, but I believe it's what I just mentioned...that they simply aren't in a big enough market to sell games out.

Did you know that Austin, Texas is the biggest market in the United States to NOT have a pro sports franchise? That might be a nice option in the future. The "Texas Triangle" in basketball AND football would be nice and make for yet another intense in-state rivalry.

You are mostly right. To add to that, the stadium is too big for the market. When it was built, it had to have the capacity to host a few big college games.

Ya know, I read another post to a similar effect on here last night & got to wondering what JVilles actual population IS ... turns out the pop. is only 736 grand & some change. That would mean that in order for them to sell their stadium out, roughly one-tenth of the city's entire population would have to buy a ticket. Imagine if 450,000 showed up for a Texan game ... now THATS fan support if 1/10th of the city shows up. Being such a small market I believe they were set up to fail. Don't get me wrong & maybe Imma missin some of the dynamics of this but it sure seems that the NFLs dog ate their homework when it came time to justify why JVille should get an expansion franchise ... Just my miserable $.02 worth.

Just did a quick check and Austin is 656,500 or so. That's less than Jax. I don't see how they'd be big enough either, unless pro football fans are just an outrageously high percentage of the population there.
PS-I suspect that Austin would be a bad place for pro football, even if they had a larger population, because all the football fans there are so Longhorn crazed (not that that's bad or anything). They'd all watch the games on TV, but they'd only go to the Longhorn games (I suspect).

They would have to build a nascar track inside that stadium to sell out. Oh and make it legal to have relations with a family member and/or pet on Sundays.
I actually thought San Antonio had a bigger market than Austin? Isn't the SA population larger than in Austin?

Don't get too cocky. I grew up an Oiler fan and it was tough selling out any game. We constantly had to have corporate sponsors buy the remaining seats.
I remember one time we had a Monday Night Football game and someone had to step in at the last second to buy the remaining 5,000 tickets unsold, otherwise we would have been the first city to not sell out a MNF game.
Sounds like Jacksonville is going through the same thing.
So when the Jags move to LA do you think they will keep the Jaguar name?

This is where I think your wrong...it wouldnt be a bad place to put a franchise because of longhorn fans and their lack of attendance...its because there already is a 2 team rival and to add a third in the mix....it would be hard to turn the current fans from their current teams.
And another note....if Reliant had more seats, I think Reliant would sell more tickets. If they are having problems filling their seats....then perhaps they should do some research to see what would fill the seats...i.e. cheaper tickets or just field A BETTER TEAM (hahahaha).

The best place outside of Los Angeles to move the Jags would be San Antonio. The city has over 1 million people, a stadium that was constructed for football (The Alamodome) and it is growing by leaps and bounds with people and businesses right now. In fact, Jacksonville narrowly beat out San Antonio for the NFL franchise back in 1993. The city is larger than Jacksonville, Charlotte, New Orleans, Cincinnati, and a few other NFL cities. Plus if you factor in that Austin is just over an hour away, San Antonio would appear to be an attractive location to move the team.
I'm sorry, I had a rough moment there for a second. Jerry Jones would never allow San Antonio to become an NFL city. San Antonio is so in love with the DALLAS Cowboys that they would not properly support a team of their own. S.A. is content with having another city's team in town for training camp two weeks a year. Not to mention that Jerry Jones is smart enough to realize that he has a cash cow five hours away that is full of loyal Cowboys fans. He will vote down any measure that would cut into his profit margin, and S.A. constitues a tremendous amount of cash for him.

Move the Jags down here to the Rio Grande Valley. Call it FUTBOL to confuse the folks from Mexico and they will come across the border in droves (even if they have to blow up that stupid wall they are planning to build) expecting to see Soccer. It would make someone a lot of money for a short while.
And Jerry Jones should worry about Houston tapping into the Cowgirl fan base in SA... Houston is at least an hour closer to SA.
Back to blackouts... I really hope some how they break the monopoly Direct TV has on the NFL to let individual games be available on PPV basis to a much broader market. It makes sense for everyone execpt DirectTV.

I'm with you guys (TexasToro and South Texan) on this one. I moved from Houston (of course a lifetime Houston fan) to San Antonio since 1974 and was born in the Rio Grande Valley. This Cowboys fan San Antonio base is really overly controlled media and old rooted stubborn style. The city wants to grow and join the other major cities. They say that it changes with the times but will not recognize the other growing fast Houston fan base that lives here. The city is only two hours away from Houston and I know an ever growing presence are moving here. San Antonio needs to share the Texan arena fairly among themselves. The Longhorns and also the Aggies (near Houston)get more coverage than the Texans and that goes for their online sports news like MYSA.com. I've bombarded them with emails asking why and not once have they responded. Next I'm preparing to send those same emails to all the local columnists and stations. They should out of fairness and equality have one media be more attentive to the Texans fan base. I know many Cowboy fans that also like the Texans as their default second favorite. As a matter of fact since working at the military bases here ( 5 total) there are alot of out of towner state team fans here also but come on last time I checked Houston just like Dallas is in Texas and I was born a Texan lived in Houston and now San Antonio but I am and will be a prould Texan fan. I'll bet you plenty that if the Texans and not the Cowboys were in the SB those Cowboy fans would be rooting for the Texans and the San Antonio media base would be all over it. IMO yes I think and favor a team coming here but those Boys fans would be hard to depart I believe. Although it would bring both city teams to play here. Actually I was hoping for a MLB baseball team to come because on the contrary I really don't see a real strong Astro/ Ranger dividing fan base like I do with football especially the Cowboys.

I believe SA would embrace a team there. Many were hoping they would get the Saints when all that was going on. Texas is big enough for another team. San Antonio Jaguars? Texans, Jags is already a rivalry, can you imagine if they did move to SA? LA has the Market, but the fan base there is horrible. LA Rams, LA Raiders? There is too much to do to worry about football in LA.
SA would embrace a team there but Jerry wouldn't. That area is a cash cow for him and while most would remain Cowboys fans there would still be some impact on merchandise sales, etc.
The Alamodome is a nice place but it was barely an NFL ready stadium when it opened - when around 1990? (lack of suites/corporate amenities, etc).. It would require a major renovation in order to compete with places like Reliant and Arlington as a money generator.
LA (Cal in general) isn't spending one public dollar on a new stadium so unless some deep pocketed group of individuals are willing to pony up a billion, it's not getting done there any time soon.
since i live near jacksonville, i'm unable to watch the game anywhere... i usually go to a sports bar that has sunday ticket, but since it's in the area, that's blacked out too... i'm so flippin mad right now... does anybody know if 610 is streaming the game?

Right, just what this country needs, MORE Mexican citizens breaking in. I can't WAIT for that "stupid" wall to be erected.

Too close to DC, and not a large enough city.

Texan born, I know just what you mean. I live in S.A. also and I have also tried to contact the news outlets here in town to ask for more Texans coverage. Just like you, no one ever responded. It seems as if KSAT (especially them), KENS, and WOAI are purposely trying to minimize the fact that there are more than one team in Texas now. I have noticed that any time the Texans win, they barely even mention their games, but when they lose, they show highlights of the game. Now, is that a bias or what? This city will never be anything but a Cowboys town, I have come to accept it. Anytime they sell Dallas Cowboys merchandise in the San Antonio airport, that should tell you something. I go to Dallas on business all the time and I have yet to see Spurs merchandise at DFW or Love Field. San Antonio will always be the little brother.
