I certainly hope you are right. I think the overall improvement in our team defense will motivate all of them to step their game up. But the one thing I like about Kubs is that he's not afraid to pull the chain on someone who isn't performing. C.C. had better play well or he won't be starting for long. The same goes for the rest of the secondary. By not taking a S in the early rounds Kubs is putting a lot of faith in the guys we already have....I hope he's right.

What I don't believe Brown has and is also the most important trait for a FS, are ball and coverage skills.
That is why I was advocating for Nelson in the draft because I believe that he had that big time playmaking ability evidenced in his coverage skills. I just don't think Brown will ever be anything more than a backup SS.

That principle would work great IF we had a better selection of secondary. In the past, we haven't felt comfortable except for SS. We can hope that at least 1 or 2 of last year's repeat crew will make great strides, or that one of our new acquisitions steps up to perform to high level. However, just frequently changing starters for change sake has as much chance of working for Kubiak as it did for Capers. When the soup is mostly broth and short on meat, you have to be satisfied with that which is there................and maybe spice it up to make it more palatable.

I like seeing the competition in training camp. Kubiak said something on the Draft Luncheon video that hit the core of the teams problem. It doesn't take much to make the Texans' NFL roster. He wants this team to be a team that is hard to get on that final 53. In the past we have been doing a lot of patching and band-aid remedying. No more. If you aren't heathly, Kubiak isn't going to count on you being there. If you can't compete in training camp, you don't deserve to be on the team. This last reason is why we let P-Burnt go last year. He was ridiculous.
No more fun and games. Time for some serious competition. Let's get this team winning! Man I can't wait for the season to start.

I think he'll continue to get better and better as time goes along. I am, however, excited to see Brandon Mitchell in the preseason. I'm wondering if he can give C.C. a run for his money. He was undrafted out of Ohio State, but Ohio State sure did have a good defense in 2006. I'm interested to see if his Ohio State success carries over to the NFL.
Mitchel could end up being that "diamond in the rough" for FS. Having watched him last year, he has "stone hands." He did manage to "bat" a number of passes away...........some were thrown right at him.............he could have used some glue.

I know CC's played mostly FS since being drafted, but here's something I've always wondered:
He was drafted as a SS (or so I have always believed). Who looks to be the better SS: Glenn Earl or CC?

Earl coming out was the second best safety in the draft behind Taylor before he blew out his knee. He was known as an in the box type safety with good range, and quoted as being the hardest hitting D back in college. I think Earl definately is the harder hitter, and the best suited to be SS, being better at run support but still athletic enough to cover a seam route by the TE. C.C is an adequate starter at FS, but probably better suited as a SS, coming out he ran a high 4.4 to a low 4.5, and was said to be a pretty good player projected to be a mid round pick but because of his commitment to the military was drafted lower, I think both were good finds but only make adequate starters, with that being said they would make excellent back ups, top of the line back ups at that. I guess we'll see, if they both turn out OK we'll have one of the best young safety tandems, under the REDSKINS that is.

IMO CC has to go, period. if it's mitchell or harrison fine but that guy doesn't need to see the field except for special teams.

what about von hutchins moving to safety. he played some FS in college. imo we need someone with range and the ability to cover...i dont think he would be any worse than cc

I think CC can get better. He didn't really show the improvement last year, but from the coaches' comments it seemed like a lot of his issues were ones that could be corrected - biting on fakes, technique. Sadly, they never seemed to BE corrected. True, though, it didn't seem like the staff ever emphasized safety last year or this as a position of need.
The media has reported Hutchins will be tried at FS. At least there will be some competition there.

Brandon Mitchell could very well win the starting job. He's got good range and sticky fingers.
..........with the right type of glue.

I'm not arguing with you................I think Mitchell has great potential for the starting FS spot.................but there is definitely the "hands" issue that have been borne out in several of his draft profiles..............hopefully Kub et al can add the right type of "glue" to the mix.

Any news on CC or our current FS situation?

Gary Kubiak gave C.C. a ringing endorsementshortly after the draft, leading me to believe that C.C. is going to beour starting FS next season.
I am so sick of this! This team is the only team that would try to fita square peg on a triagle hole. CC is linebacker material not safety.Am I wrong? Well except for his great run stopping and dynamic tackles, can ANY OF YOU give me a specific example where CC made a play againsta pass.
Funny cause I see him nowhere near passing plays or atleast 3 yards trailing behind a reciever. CC is not a safety.

I couldn't agree more!
