Kind of puzzling to be honest.
The youth movement at safety has officially begun, as the Jaguars informed Donovin Darius (http://www.jaguars.com/team/bio/1060.asp) on Thursday morning that the team was releasing him. So ends the Jaguars career of the player who has started more games than any other defensive player in franchise history.

Now I know I haven't really wanted to get any more Jag players but this guy is a whole different story. I say if he can come here and help go for it.

To me it is not that puzzling. I remember Darius was going to hold out a year or so ago with contract talks. Then they lose him to injury for a long time in back to back years. He is getting up there in age, he has beent there for quite some time. I think this is his 9th or 10th year in the NFL. However I really don't think who ever steps into this role will be as good a tackler as Darius was. This is good news for us.

I don't think we can afford his salary to be honest.

Salary sux!!! I would like to have a guy like that in our secondary. Talk about upgrade. I don't care how old he is, he plays very well.

That's an easy decision. The FO would immediately pull the plug on a deal with McCardell because they're confident with the WRs we have, and the secondary is a much bigger need.
I have to think Smith is racking his brains right now trying to work a scenario. Darius is a bad mofo. I like how he plays. If we were to pick him up that would be huge for us. We would immediately have another proven leader in the backfield who would be playing against the team that cut him twice a year for the rest of his career. That's big time right there.
I say we look for a way to free up the cap space. Sam Adams and Keenan McCardell are luxury signings. Darius is a necessity and he's falling right in our lap.
I know the odds are long but I can't help being excited at the possibility.

well i hate to bring this up but we've tried to get him here before and it didn't work...i think you'll see him re-unite with dom capers in miami...not really that big of a move for him and his family and they have more money to give him...plus he's another in the box safety...we already have like four of them...why get another?

because we don't have one as good as him

There are a few Jag players I would love to have on the team, I wouldn't mind Darius, only if he came at a resonable price

he's hurt too much...

Darius was twice named as a franchise player in free agency and that seemed to reflect his value to the Jaguars at the time, and he is a two-time Pro Bowl alternate. But he played in just 12 games the past two seasons, and the recent injury history likely contributed to the decision to release him. In 2005, Darius missed all but two games after an anterior cruciate injury. Then, in 2006, he fractured his right ankle in a late November game.

We need healthy bodies, not 32 year old DBs at the end of their careers who are coming off a torn ACL and a broken leg.

Dom Capers would have signed him.
I agree with aj.....this guy is old and injured. And in addition, he's more of a tackler than a pass defender.
Kubiak and Rick Smith both have said "It's going to get tougher each year to make this team."
With Capers, Darius would be signed and be the starter immediately. His veteran presence, the fact that he was a Jaguar, and because he is "a name" would be all that would qualify him for Capers' team.
Think on that one, guys: Kubiak vs. Capers......

Do you think 6 years 36 million will get him, or should we go higher?
sincerely,
