what do you think?
i personally think he has. i don't believe there are many backup rb's in the league as good as he has been for this team.
he has had two good years with houston, and i think he still has a few more left.
let me hear from you, even the dayne haters

i think dayne and walker just might be a nice one-two punch
One thing I'm sure that he's earned is unrestricted free agency after this season.
He's probably going to get a fair offer to stay here considering his contributions, but you don't want to go too crazy on a new contract for him. He's a Kubiak favorite so he has that going for him.
A lot of it will depend on what other teams see in his value. It's somewhat like the Vonta Leach situation with the Giants last year although that was a RFA thing, it's similar in some ways and different in others. Leach is a bonafide starting fullback. Dayne is a backup RB.
The Texans will be drafting at least one RB in April. I doubt that Green will return, and they will (again) be looking for a feature back with a breakaway threat. I'd like to see Dayne back in a supporting role -- short yardage, goal line, give someone else a breather/thunder kind of guy.

I think they bring him back on a one year deal. He's a solid player but you don't want him being your number 1.

I'd also like to see him retire here, maybe not as a starter but definitely here with us. I love to see this guy open up like he has been for the past 5 games. God willing AG won't be here next year so we can maybe see some younger blood, up and coming, to not only move the chains but for 20+ yd runs!

RD and DW are great together in the back field. I think we will be seeing that combo more often now. RD bruises the line and DW slides right through. Kubes have the team gel'n through all the injuries and they are believing in the themselves. This is only a preview of what we will see next season, but even better with a healthy squad.

The reality is, if texans want to be a dominate team they need a dominate starter at rb and an almost equal backup especially in this division. IMO Dayne is good for third string. I dont know the stats but just from watching how he runs in the games it doesnt seem like he does that great on short yard situations as I think he should but maybe im wrong. Maybe someone can find some stats on how he does on like 3rd and < 4 yards?

as much as I hate to say it....yeah I think he deserves another year....just not as our starting RB...which means we'll have to find a feature back that compliments Walker or Taylor and riding the Dayne train for those bruising runs in the 2nd half.

Third string short yard situations
see....I have a problem with this....I dont want to label him as our short yardage back because I've seen him dance behind the line and he stops pumping his legs way too much on short yardage situations and then gets dropped for a loss or no gain and we CAN NOT HAVE THAT ON 3RD AND 1-2 YDS. Its called drive killers.

I love ron dayne, specially in the second half when he is running over tired defenses... but from what i have seen, his only flaw is that he gets going in the second half of the season...

Agreed. I think he's definitely earned a right to stay here. I've been hard on the guy in the past because he's never come close to living up to the potential he had coming out of college, but he's proven to be a reliable back late in the season when it counts the most. He gets stronger as the game and season go on.
We will be looking for that home run hitter like you say but I'm not so sure Green will just be dumped, unless it's a money issue. Kubiak is the type of guy to give a veteran another chance to prove himself. As easy as it is for me to speculate that we'll find a replacement for him, it's also easy for me to see him returning for one more year.....as questionable of a decision as that might be.
we'll have to wait and see how things play out.

Running Dayne through the first half, wearing out the defense and then sending in Walker to just run around them in the seond half. I think that would work for us.

There's no reason to believe AG's knee will ever be football good again. We're told there's nothing structurally wrong, yet he rested it most of the season but can't shake the chronic pain and swelling after he runs and cuts. Too much like DD/W for me.
His cap number is up over 5 million next year and they can't keep him around at that price unless he can start and finish the majority of the games. I see them giving him a chance up until July timeframe at which time they can cut him and spread the dead money ($3.75 IIRC) over '08 and '09. His playing days could be over for all we know.

I knew you all would change your tunes (and nicknames ) around midway through the season. I'm just glad you did it. So now 'a yard and a cloud of fat' becomes DAYNE TRAIN - I like it. :)
It seems he's getting really good at blocking when he isn't running, like the TD throw to OD probably would not have gotten there if Dayne hadn't picked up a badass block.
Once again, I think Ron Dayne has earned a spot in our RB corps next year. And you guys are right - D. Walker is like a polar opposite of Dayne; he can find the holes much faster than RD but doesn't have DAYNE TRAIN locomotive momentum that begins after he's gotten a step or two. I'm very anxious to see what these guys can do for the remainder of this season. I really like the mood around here.

Just to reiterate what someone else said, it works best to tire the defense out with your little guy, who can break some tackles and spread the d out, making them chase him ect, THEN put Dayne in to abuse the already weakened defense and suck the rest of their energy out and bowl over them. then you can use both of them according to the situation. If you put the big guy in too early, he gets worn out also, and the fresh defense has no trouble stopping him. they just have to chase him down and trip him up. A fresh big guy on a worn defense is where its at

I haven't I still see those short burst yards out there. He is just doing this just to get a paycheck. We need a running back that can go all year long and all day long.

Okay, I admit I was a Dayne hater since the day he signed with us, but now I have to admit.....he's an important part of our running game now.......there I said it!!!!! He has indelibly earned a spot on this team for now and the foreseeable future. I just wish AG would've panned out as well as the Dayne pick-up, and who knows, 3 years down the road he might.........nah, just kidding, I'd be suprised if AG plays through the 2008 season. Oh welll, trial and error front office. :(

I feel pretty much as everyone else here does & that is the fact we need a break away back capable of out running the D once he gets open.

Top five reasons Dayne will be back:
(5) 90 % of Houston area fast food franchises would collapse if he left
:D
(4) Only guy on roster who took Whataburger coupons in lieu of signing bonus
okay these are serious:
(3) He is a good 2nd half RB; second half of the game and second half of the season - at least in the Shermiak offense
(2) He is willing to play thru pain.
(1) He does not fumble.

The thing about Ronnie is that because he is such a bruiser he needs a lot of carries to do well but a one-two punch with him and DW the D will be too tired from chasing DW that Ron will run through and vise versa.

Dayne can stay for 2 yrs...dont be fooled by what you have seen so far...WE NEED A THREAT at RB, someone who can break 25+yd runs and catch outta the backfield. Green might be done, and I don't know the cap hit but he should not mind taking a pay cut...I commend Dayne on what he has done here but we still need a RB and a (nasty) OL. Right now we play fundamentality sound football on offense but nothing spectacular other than AJ. While I'm impressed with the steps that have unfolded we need another threat on offense.
