View Full Version : My few observations

The game against the Broncos was a very nice win and it revealed some things about our team.

The first obvious thing was that Mario and our defense have been very young and are beginning to form again. The injuries to the secondary has proven a couple of things, such as Demarcus Faggins is gone this offseason and Von Hutchins is not a FS and is a better nickle than Demarcus. Fred Bennett has definetly made his case for the #2 CB next year and Will Demps has been a solid upgrade to our secondary.

Offensively this is a young team still and another year together will only allow us to get better. Without Johnson we weren't that great. With him we are pretty hard to stop. KW and AD have been so valuable to us and the competition at the WR spot paid off for us. Hopefully the future comp at QB will make our team better.

Front office wise, this team has done a great job finding the players needed. Will Demps is a keeper IMO and Schaub worked out for the most part of this season. Amobi Okoye has helped Williams succeed and he produced some good numbers. I also like the mind games Rick Smith plays. In yesterday's Chronicle he was quoted about several players. The ones that weren't playing he didn't mind saying if they would be back or not but the guys in the secondary that are still playing he was saying pretty much that the jury is out on those guys. I believe this so those guys will finish the season strong.

I think Kubiak has pretty much won his team over at this point. Ever since he made that speech to Demeco, Andre Johnson, and Mario Williams - they have simply honored the request to raise their great game to a higher level of greatness. Mario has been sick.
I also like Kubiak basically calling the same play the Broncos ran to score a TD with AJ for our own TD. To me that showed our coach new what he was doing and perhaps got his team fired up when we scored.

I think this team can and will go 9-7 for the year. With all the injuries involved, this team is pretty darn good. I think the difference has been what we noticed in the offseason. We now have some depth. This has been obvious in our WR corp, our RBs, our DBs and of course our QB position. Last year The Texans are only winning 4 games with these injuries. This year they are showing some heart. Either way this team has improved over last season.

Andre Davis FIlled in nicely But Mathis is a true threat at KR please keep this guy maybe help him with punt return duties as well.

Schaub needs to read quicker the ball needs to be out of his hands and in decisive fashion he double clutched or held it too long a few times this year. Our offense looks very crisp as long as the rhythmn is there.

Bennett is playing better and better every game. Fletcher looked good as well.

Our run defense has really come out of nowhere the past 2 weeks to put the clamps to take that away I was really impressed with the way we handled the opposing run game.

We seemed to learn the less turnovers we have the more chance we have of winning. :D

The only problem is he will return one kick and then be out the rest of the season. I have to disagree on keeping him. Obviously football is a physical game, and if year after year you go down because of injury, you got to go. I don't care who you are, or what position you play, if you can't prove you are durable, you do not need to be playing in this league.

They already said there bringing him back and it shouldn't have any affect on their chances of resigning davis.

definently keep davis, no matter what happens with the rest of the recievers.

mathis- i say he is expendible, trade bait for a 2nd round pick.

jones- teach him how to return kick offs, and make him our home run threat in 4 reciever sets.

Hmmm...I'm thinking a Sage & Jerome trade for a switching of first round picks along with a 2nd round pick this year and next. Think anybody with a top 5 pick will go for it?

No. Sage isn't worth a day one pick and Mathis is worth a 5th at best. That's not enough to move up from the 15-20 range to the top 5 AND expect a 2nd also.

I think this statement is more apt to belong to Sage than Schaub.

I thought Schaub was excellent in his getting rid of the ball fast with quick decisions giving our reciever a chance to get loose and get YAC. My gripe about him would be that a few times he cost us dearly when he did not see the coverage and threw really bad passes which got intercepted and one which was in the red zone. Cost us points and Manning then found Wayne on the next play and they scored so that was a 10-14 point turnaround. So i want him to improve in his reading defenses and being smarter with the football ..ESPECIALLY when we are within field goal range.

Sage was good but i thought he DID hold onto the ball a little too long at times.
Also he appears to be a slow starter. Needs a few series of plays before he gets his groove on.
The last thing i would like Sage to improve on would be to not make up his mind where he is going before the ball is snapped. One play this week, (denver game) he wanted to throw the short post or slant to Davis on the outside and it was obvious that the corner had jumped the route or maybe it was the olb but davis had no chance to get to the ball and Sage looked right at them and STILL threw the ball. We were very very lucky that , that pass was not intercepted. It was around our 40 yard line.
----------------------------

But i pretty much agree with your other observations.

EDIT: One more thing. Schaub needs to really beef up during the off season. He needs to toughen up. Put him on a good schedule of weight training and also a good diet. I thought that he should have been more durable since he isn't great at scrambling.

How about a 5th round pick, a dirty rag, a rusty nail, two sticks of gum, and a coupon for a free coke at participating McD's for Jameel Cook?

Drop the 5th round pick and you have a deal.
