I understand that we all want to have the best season and yes it does look really nice, but saying how we'll be unstoppable and in the top 5 on defense? IMHO we will be lucky to get near the top 15 on defense. I actually will go so far as to say we'll get between 15-19 Def. and while Andre, Schaub, Green, Daniels and hopefully Jones will make a nice offense, our line still needs to gel together to form one solid line (i know its been years). I predict us about 18th rank on offense. This would be higher but with all the interceptions Matt will throw, and the sacks he'll get...
Listen, I love the Texans and sat on the edge of my couch every season except last (too much college work), but you all have to understand one thing. While we are getting better, almost all the other teams are getting (more or less) equally better too.
Now like I said before, after the next 2 good draft seasons, we'll have a winning playoff caliber team on our hands.

Wow. For some reason I find this thread offensive. Maybe it's because, with 2 whole posts under your belt, you feel the need to tell others to "stop dreaming". While I'm not one of the folks claiming we'll be in the top five of anything, I don't find anything wrong with people being overly optimistic if they choose to because anything is possible. I'm curious....if you have children do you tell them not to have any goals or ambitions if they seem a little unrealistic to you?
Perhaps you should think of a better title for your threads in the future.

Why do you care if people are optimistic? There are people here who are much more optimistic than I am and that's fine. If you don't think we're going to win more than 7 games this year, that's OK. But don't rain on other people's parades.
And, as bad as our defense was last year, if you remove the first 3 games, which were really, really phenomenally bad, our defense would have been ranked in the top 12. I think we've improved our defense both in terms of players and in terms of coaching and we'll play even better.
I also disagree that other teams are improving as much as we are. I think we've improved more than the Colts, Titans, or Jags.
I also disagree that our line is as bad as you think it is. I think that we'll give up far fewer sacks with Schaub as QB than we did with Carr but that remains to be seen. Then again, I was one of the people who thought that Carr was one of our biggest problems last year.
Finally, what do you think it takes to be a play-off contender? Do you think you have to have a team without weakness? Do you think you have to be a powerhouse to make it to the playoffs? Just look at the teams that made it to the playoffs the past few years and you'll see that's an incorrect assumption. We're on the way up. We may not make the playoffs next year but we'll be a much stronger team and our playoff hopes aren't going to be dashed before the halfway point.

if we win the division we are automattically in the playoffs.
if we can beat the titans twice and the jagaurs twice and the colts at least once then we have it made.
even if we dont win the diviosion we will probobly have a better record than most teams so we can still make it as a wild card.
Baltimore or Cincinatti wins their division, other than that we have the the steelers who are steadily going downhill and the pathetic browns
San Diego will win their division other than that the chiefs are aging and pobobly wont win anymore than 8 games this season, the broncos who are probobly about just as good as we are and the raiders who will not win many games this season either.
then the pats win their division , and the jets will suck and so will miami and the bill are okay but not a playoff-caliber team.
so if we win our division than we are already in and if we dont the only competion is either the Bengals, Broncos, Ravens, bills and mabye the chiefs. so i think that with a 9-7 record we can earn a wildcard spot.
"If we win the division then we are in the playoffs." True, but.... are you crazy? Why should we win the divsion?
I believe that 7-9 is a realistic expectation. If a couple of games fall our way, maybe that record will be reversed to 9-7 and a shot at a Wild Card berth. But you guys that are setting expectations of sweeping the Titans and the Jags and splitting with the Colts are setting up for disappointment.

Well when your a fan of a team you tend to over exadurate everything a little bit, some more then others. Coming from a fan view, I hope and wish our defense will be a top 10 and our offense will be good enough to win games for us. If you come from a common sense view and non-biased, you would say a top 5 defense is out of the question, and a 15-20th ranked defense would be a positive.

Drop the first 3 or 4 games last season, and we had a descent D. That was with Mario having a bad foot and not having Okoye. Take what we have right now and add Reggie Nelson at FS, and I think we would be top 5. As of right now (and in reality), I think we MIGHT be looking at top 10. Wild guess--I'll say we wind up at about 12 or 13 on D.

Is it really that far fetched? After our first 3 games there were only 3 games that we were not in . The Dallas game, the Jet game, and the Patriot game. We did win 3 out of the last 5 including the last 2 of the season. Both games against the Titans should have been wins and the game against the Bills should have been ours. We could have easily been 9-7 last year.

Well I look at it like this.
Look where we are and look where the Browns are.
We are on the cusp of putting it all together. with 2 years of less talent we are further ahead of the Browns. The Browns are on their 3rd Head coach, We are still on coach #2.
Everyone criticizes us for letting go of Glenn and Sharper. But I ask you despite their "Veteran Leadership" were they really that good? Considering I barely saw glenn on the field last year and I did not see sharper at all. Gaffney did an OK job at New England but he looked the same to me nothing spectacular just a 10 yard out pattern.
WE are building something here the right way always have been just things have not gone our way. I think the Capers Casserly problem was when something wasn't going right they tried to quick fix the issue which caused more problems. However they did bring in serviceable players. Now we have taken the next step under Kubiak and really started to upgrade positions instead of just bring in serviceable players. The Browns are in the same mode we are but have been just as snakebitten by injuries as we have. We had something like 13 players on IR last year yet we still tripled our win total. We had a chance to win a game or 2 more. This year we have gotten the best player available at 10 and infused youth at other positions of need. Although I would love to say 9-7 gets us into the playoffs. I sincerely doubt it. I think the jets have 10 wins since they bolstered their running game with the addition of Thomas Jones, Added the best CB in the draft. I think they are wild Card #1.
I think the Broncos take the other wild card spot this year with a decent defense and improved running attack. I think we should look to be 8-8.

If it were easy, the outcome may have been different. Many games come down to a handful of critical plays, in which one team simply executes better than the other.
While our offense has typically been the scapegoat, the defense failed to execute in most of these losses - particularly the "final play" losses against the Bills and Titans.

The problem is that when the Texans come out in the 2007 season and let's say, are1-3 out of the gate. This same "dreamers" come out and start slinging mud at the team and the Head coach cause they think the team should go 11-5. And that's when you see all these messsages, Kubiak is an "*****". Matt shaub sucks!!! Relax people, I think going 8-8. would be pretty awesome in kubiaks second season. And every year that goes by we should improve, in a couple of years, 11-5 looks realistic. EVERYBODY WANTS MICROWAVE RESULTS. WHY DON'T WE BAKE INSTEAD. IT WILL TASTE ALOT BETTER.

Man that whole posts just sucks. I mean HE OMITTED the Broncos, Who will be the number 2 wild card or thats my prediction. They have WR, and an O line to give Cutler oppurtunities to step up. Plus they have a good running game. I think a .500 year is a dream, anything more than that Ill nominate Kubiak for President in '08

That was not a contradiction. You assumed that the rate of improvement would remain the same for all teams and TexansFan03 did not make such a statement. He merely stated that all the other teams improved at the same rate as the Texans, this year. By the way, I do not necessarily agree with that presumption. Some teams in my opinion have improved far more than the Texans have. Back to the point, there is no reason to assume that the Texans, or any other team for that matter, will not increase the rate of their improvement within the next 2 years. So now you can understand how TexansFan03 can have hope that the Texans will catch up, as you say, without defying the logic of his arguement.

WOW!!! So much negativity. I believe that the defense will be a top 10 defense this season. I also believe our offense will be much improved. Giving us a legit shot at the playoffs this yr. Thats right i said Playoffs!!! Comparing our team to N.O. at this time last yr., i feel that we have a better team. We all know what N.O. did last yr. don't we?? Ahhhh. I'm not pessimistic, but disagree with Neocon's assertion that an opinion can’t be expressed unless you’ve achieved some sort of Post Minimum which to me is offensive.
I’ve been backing Houston Football ever since Wilson was blocking for Coleman and Parsley was something other than garnish on your plate. Even followed the team up to Greeley Co. one summer to watch them scrimmage the Broncos for a week.
And let me add my appologies for not noticing the Quote buton, but I was able to overcome that oversight with a simple cut and paste move.(pretty slick, huh?) but as far as typing incorrectly, What?!?......and if we're going to talk about what we teach our kids, having a firm grasp of reality goes hand in hand with any short term goals or ambitions, as what I read into what the original poster was trying to convey, right, wrong or indifferent. His opinion, not to be ridiculed for it due to his lack of Posts.
My thoughts,
Houston picked up a QB that sat on the bench for a team that went 7-9 and 8-8 over the last 2 years, but still he was'nt given an opportunity, a RB that came off a team with a 500 record going to a team with a less than stellar OL, and a #1 pick in the draft that many say is a "project'. I can see why someone may think all thiis talk of playoff is a little premature. And this "name the D" stuff? Seems like we're putting the cart before the horse....just a little bit? The only player that's proven himself is Ryans. And we're going to be the "Billy-Bad-Asses" of the NFL based on THAT?!?
But on the other hand, the QB may prove he was a talent that was'nt given an opportunity in Atlanta, the RB may find holes that others could'nt see and run for 1500+yds and we may be naming the D the 2nd Coming of the Nigerian Nightmare!
I expect something between the two. Just my opinion. (And based on my # of Posts, should'nt carry much weight) WR

Man, talk about old topics...
Yea, I remember this post I made, and I think all the people besides a couple took a shot to the heart w/ it. Yea, just to clear things up, I meant lets not go off JUST YET saying were the greatist team to wear a uniform based off of some off season signings and a less than spectacular year last year. Lets get some Ws and a few less Os and then all sing the playoff song.
As for the thing about teaching my kids, when I read that I just shook my head at how some people can be. I'm not getting into that because if you actually interpreted my post like a person of normal intelligence, you would have known it is quite reasonable to teach someone not to run around shouting "I'm a millionaire, I'm a millionaire to everyone before you watched the lotto drawing." (People like that often appear as dumb*****, and I didn't want any of us appearing as such but hey, cant help everybody apparently)
Now enough of this, were at where we're at. Lets talk about the Colts in another topic.
