View Full Version : Is Andre Davis signing critical?

My thoughts are initially yes. But what if he really comes in asking for huge $$$. I think if that is the case, we can save some money for perhaps a bigger free agent pick up(Suggs perhaps?).
Reasoning for not paying Andre Davis an enormous amount... Jacoby Jones.
They basically fit the same role on the team. Yes, I love having depth at WR with AJ, Walter, Jacoby and Andre Davis. I hope we can keep him, and I would like to see both he and Jacoby back deep on punts and kick off returns, just another thought in the coverage teams mind.
OK, so I've talked my self into paying Andre Davis...KEEP HIM!
I really hope he sees his role here and we can sign him to a nice 5 year deal. Wouldn't that be sweet, we would be SET at wide out.

I think Andre Davis showed some special skill, especially in the Tennessee game to put us ahead. Looked like an all pro. Let's make every effort to keep someone that we know can do the job. Jones has a lot of potential but is still a work in progress.

Charlie Pallilo interviewed Kubiak this afternoon on the radio. Last night Kubiak said he and Rick Smith we at Andre's house for a recruiting call.....trying to convince he and his wife that he was welcome back on the squad this coming season. So that makes me think that what ever talks Davis and the Texans get in to before he goes FA will be for more than one more year.
Time will tell..................

Rick Smith said that we are not going to let good players leave. I think Andre Davis is a really good player. Therefore we should not let him leave but who knows how much he wants.

I think he deserves to get payed.....not break the bank, but he is a dynamic talent that is a real plus for our team.

If I had to guess 5 yrs/18 mil.Terrell Owens signed something like a 4 yr 24 million dollar deal, and Andre Davis isn't TO.One thing is for sure,if we do sign him,he will be our #2 not Walter.Walter is still on the hook for 3 yrs at like 1.5 mil a year

Davis had a good year but I don't think anything he did warrants "huge" cash. The main thing that would be of concern is that he'll likely be looking for a team that is willing to give him more playing time. I don't see anyone desperate enough to offer him a #1 WR spot but maybe a #2. That's the only thing that I can see that will persuade him to leave.
I could see us paying Andre a fair dollar for his skills. As for the let Davis go because of the potential Jacoby may bring is an uncertain.I would rather put my money on someone who has proven they are capable of breaking the big play versus the Jacoby preseason wonder.
I like Jacoby and believe he definitely has the potential to become a good player but after his injury he had a serious meltdown.Personally sign Davis, keep JJ and let him develop but dump Mathis.
Give Davis Mathis's money and retain him he will be worth it.;)

Davis does deserve to get paid but only the amount of money for a solid #3 receiver. He's not a #2 and in a few years will probably be our 4th WR. Remember JJ is a very promising player and will be hard to keep out of the starting lineup.

I will politely disagree, only because if he was going to be our #2, he would've been so from the time they figured out he can make catches and score TD's.
Walter is a "do it all" kind of player. He'll run block, he can catch the ball over the middle in traffic, and he can make moves when he has to. Andre` Davis will make some drops that seem like routine catches, and probably doesn't run block as well or as hard as Walter does. Andre` Davis will make a great slot receiver on our offense, no question about that. The reason he will get paid more than KW is because that guy can return a freakin kick holy crap.

WE BETTER RE-SIGN HIM! If not, he will end up a titan!
JJ is not ready yet, and if we keep Andre Davis, then we can let mathis go.
KEEP ANDRE DAVIS OFF THE TITANS ROSTER!

You took me out of context,I said if we gave him a huge contract,I don't see him being our #3.If he's our #3 we won't resign him.I do see what your saying about Walter being a better all around reciever though.

I completely agree. Davis is a great talent, not worth breaking the bank but worth cutting Mathis. And the idea of him on the Titans roster is horrible, that along with VY having a good season could cost us a playoff spot.

Considering how important the special teams game is to our team, how many points and positive field position he put us in, and how frail Mathis is, and how dynamic Andre Davis is in the return game and as a deep threat, to me he warrants a 5 year 14 million dollar contract.

It sux that Mathis can't stay on the field. When he was healthy our Return team was looking real strong.
I don't think Davis did anything to get an elite, break the bank type contract. He is a great special teams player, and he really stepped up when we needed it the most. He will get a nice contract and stay in Houston, I am confident of that. In all likelyhood, we cut Mathis and kick his butt out the door so we can comfortably afford Davis.C'mon dude lets spend some money, after all its more fun to spend someone elses money! :D
Hell yeah! Let's get one big explosive veteran, game breaking, elite FA.....just one!:DLook I'm talking real hard to Kubes about Taylor but I'm not promising you anything.:D

I hope they sign him I bought his battle red jersey.
I think Davis will get inked. We really dont have any dependable KR/PR on the squad. Mathis is a bout a reliable as a one of those Daewoo cars.:)You're kinda rating Mathis a little high THERE.

I wouldn't call him a bust and he still has tons of potential. Kubiak said he was turning the corner and then got a freak hot spot on his leg.

No, at the time he was a really good pick but in football you never know when a good player can go sour due to injury or lack of performance. Right now, Davis has proven more than Mathis has done for us and with his talent and experience he could help this team a lot.

If the Texans resign Davis they won't have to worry about a receiver in the off season for a while, that would be nice. No other team is as deep at receiver than the Texans.

Maybe the patriots and the colts
Do you guys think Mathis was a bad pick?As of this moment and time Davis is the more valuable of the two.Put your money on Davis instead of one who has had injury problems. If you can not retain both who would your choice be?
Mine would be Davis. ;)

True that,if the Texans stay healthy & strong over the off season, we will be a reckoning force in our division.
Hope we can keep the team intact.

We really do need to keep what we have intact, you are right on there!!
Another thing that needs to happen is that the Texans become more than a "one dimensional" offensive team which is currently what we are.
With Dre Johnson in the line up we are always a threat to break a big play and the other teams defend us for that very possiblity. Walters and Davis really help to shore-up our receiving corps threat but we can't take the next step until we have a consistant solid running game. This is vital to the Texans success.

That's why Alex Gibbs was brought in. If it's a consistent running game you desire you'll get your wish soon enough. :D

I'm going to go against the grain here. I really like Davis, but I don't think it's critical. We have JJ, and yes, I know he hasn't proven himself, but I look at it like this.
AJ, KW, JJ - FA (FS, or OLB)
or
AJ, KW, A Davis, JJ
I would take the first line up. But if we don't have a chance at another FA worth picking up, or Davis is settling for WR3 money, than ABSOLUTELY sign him. He will want SOLID WR2 money though. He's proven he can handle it, AND he can return kicks on top of it. His manager is pathetic if he doesn't get great money. Not to mention a lack of better WR FA's out there. I think the only thing that keeps him here is loyalty. Let's hope we get him!

The OL is only part of the equation. I don't have confidence in the current core of RBs to provide a consistent running attack. Part of the rhythm of a running game is a RB and OL working in harmony.
Green has the injury bug, Dayne is too slow and lacks good cutting ability, Walker would be welcomed in a 3rd down back role or backup role... he is not starter quality in my opinion. Taylor is coming off a big injury.
As much as I would hate to take a RB in the 1st round when OL and Dbs are needed, I wouldn't be opposed to it.
