No problem. Let me quit my job so I can work full time running down answers to all your questions and setting up a special tailgate for you. Geez!
Shady side doesn't matter that much any more since the roof is closed with temps over 80 and in Sept. the temps will be well over 80. What is the section # of the seats you're considering? There's a seating diagram of Reliant if you click on the Tickets link at the top of the page.
If you're arriving at the bus station downtown (ignore the street people and anyone pushing shopping carts or asking for money), you will be right next to a light rail terminal which can take you the 6 miles to the Reliant stadium area. Not sure where your hotel is. You can also catch a cab from the bus station to anywhere. The train is much cheaper than a cab but the train only runs between Downtown and the Reliant Stadium area.

As far as tailgating you can just walk around and most tailgaters are glad to feed you. Some may ask for a little contribution if you can.
