Texans get....
18 - RB Jonathan Stewart Oregon Jr. 5-11 233
We could see the Texans taking Miami safety Kenny Phillips as well, but Stewart is a big, powerful runner who gives Houston its long-term starter in the backfield once the stop-gap Ahman Green era is over.

I would not be mad with that pick. I've liked the kid for a while and I think he has all the intangibles to be a very solid RB in the NFL.

I think at this point I'll be happy with any pick that improves our team. We have so many needs that any pick that contributes to winning more games is welcome in my book.

I would absolutely love that pick...
JStew or KP both would automatically upgrade their respective positions..

I would not mind the TEXANS drafting Jonathan Stewart but would rather have MENDENHALL!!!! I DON'T want to see us take Kenny Phillips though. I feel he is very over rated.

I agree I dont think this years safetys are as stacked as last years. With that being said I dont want to spend a first on a so so safety when we can get one in the third that is still a soso safety. I would not mind stewart.

AGREED! I just really don't think he will fall to us.

Id rather sign Michael Turner and us the pick on DB.

Sports Illustrated what some of us have been saying all offseason. I definitely wouldn't mind the pick as I wouldn't mind Mendenhall. Both would get us 1 step away from having a dominant offense (an OL here or there compliments of Gibbs is the other).

I don't want to break the bank on offense with FA. I'd rather spend our FA money on more than one defensive player. To me we have our corp on defense that we've gotten in the draft - Mario, Demeco, and Dunta. It is now necessary to get them some veteran help. On offense we have alot of decent players but only one that you can surround your team around - Andre Johnson. I would like to see us draft a RB and OL that can complete the core of our offense.

I noticed that most national media syndicates have us taking either JStew or Mendenhall (Probably 90% either of those guys and then 10% a CB, LT, and one site had us taking a WR, what the christ?).
So does this mean that we'll have a really crappy draft grade from the media, if we don't take one of those two RB's in the first?

You don't believe we need another WR?

Stewart is good, but I would prefer to take Mendenhall (more power) and I would prefer not to take Phillips and take Morgan in the 3rd.

We'll get raked over the coals regardless of who we take. The national media loves to hate Houston. There is zero love for our city and it's pro sports teams. I also don't give a rats *** what the media says.
I like the J Stew pick at #1.

I find this attitude among our own fans far more tiring than any negative article coming out of a 'national media' outlet.
I seriously doubt there is a "how can we disrespect Houston again?" agenda item at the Pro Football Writers of America conference every year.
The fact is that the Texans have been terrible for most of their existence and that's what people write about. Many national media members have fessed up over the past six months that maybe the Mario pick wasn't so bad after all.
Act like a stepchild and that's how you will be treated. If you (not you in particular but anyone) really don't care what the national media thinks then why all the whining about what they write?
Someone writes an article critical of the Texans -- reaction: "the guy is an *****," and "I don't care about what they write"
Someone writes an article complimentary of the Texans -- and it's "this guy obviously gets it."
As far as the draft, I think the Texans draft focus will become a little clearer after the first few weeks of free agency.
