Derrick Ward, RFA, New York Giants
Ward filled in admirably for Brandon Jacobs this season. He was able to run for 80 yards or more during five different efforts this year, including a 154-yard effort against the Bears in week thirteen. Disappointingly, Ward was also knocked out for the season near the end of that game. He managed to find the endzone on three occasions during the season, and he was just shy of 800 total offensive yards. It’s hard to see Ward changing teams given his RFA status, but there could be a few teams looking to try and acquire him if the price isn’t too steep, and the Giants have the depth to let him go.
Predicted 2008 Team: Texans – He’ll be able to compete for a split of the carries.

I like this idea. Wonder what the Giants would want for him...?

He's a RFA, so I'm sure we can set a good price on that. But if it's matched, we may not want to give up picks.

I think we would only have to give up a draft pick that is equivalent to the round Ward was picked in if we sign him as a RFA. I believe he was selected in the 7th rd. so I believe it would only cost a 7th if the Giants chose not to match an offer for him.

A 7th(if your right) isn't bad at all. However Gibbs may find a player that will be around in the 7th that we can use. He has a knack for it...hell Terrell Davis was a 6th(right?)...and look what he did.
Take a look at his info from the Giants site:

I don't think he would split carries Green playing he would be a backup, Green hurt he'd start.

It depends how the Giants tender him. Low tender will bring a 7th. Mid a 1st and high a 1st and 3rd. Schaub was high tendered last year and the Texans negotiated the 1st and 3rd into two 2nds.

Since the 2006 CBA extension, there have been 4 levels of RFA tender.
This year it's:
(1) Right of First Refusal: (and in Ward's case 7th round pick compensation) provided the Giants tender at $927,000 or 110% of his '07 salary whichever is greater. -- his base was 850k last year so the minimum tender is right in that ballpark.
(2) Right of First Refusal and a 2nd round draft choice if the Giants tender him at $1,417,000.
(3) Right of First Refusal and a 1st round draft choice if the Giants tender him at $2,017,000.
(5) Right of First Refusal, one 1st round draft choice and one 3rd round draft choice if the Giants tender him at $2,562,000.
Given the Giants cap status, if they wanted to keep him all they need to do is put the second round tender on him since $1.4 mill isn't that much for a one year deal on a RB (they paid him 850k last year) - and they can afford it - plus no other team will give up a second rounder for him. But they have Jacobs, Bradshaw and Droughns so they really aren't hurting at that position. It all depends on where he fits in their plans - and if his broken leg has healed completely.

I hate to sound like a broken record but I see this statement made in a lot of threads. Gibbs doesn't find players for this team, that is the job of Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak (and they do it well). Gibbs's opinion may have significant weight but he is not in charge of personnel decisions.

Giants are paying Jacobs and Droughns good money and they seem to like Ahmad Bradshaw. I think Derrick Ward could be had pretty easily.

In that case, maybe we should just wait and see if he gets cut and pick him up then. We'll probably draft a RB, Chris Taylor will be back, and then there's the usual suspects in Green, Dayne, & Walker. There's not one of those last three guys I wouldn't waive to make room for Ward.

Droughns was cut.
I'm not buying it, and really, unless he wanted to play for cheap, I wouldn't be behind it either. Derrick Ward had a broken leg last season. Healed or not, I'm willing to bet that this draft will have a few great RB's come out of it.
After watching a lot of the combine yesterday, I say this years FA RB crop is poop anyway after Michael Turner, so why not just go with discovering a gem.

I'd rather draft a RB than get a guy who played well until he spent half the season on the injury report with nagging small problems....We've been through that with Domanick Davis. I'm tired of that game.

Yeah dude I wouldn't put much stock in the veteran RB thing right now. Everything I've seen has us targeting a RB in this draft because it's DEEP at the position and they're all studs. All indications are that if one of our first two targeted prospects is still on the board at 18 we'll snag him. The size and speed of these draftees just can't be passed up. Who knows when we'll see another RB draft class like this.

How true...I would love for us to draft Jonathan Stewart.

Mendenhall and McFadden are getting all the combine press, but Stewart has been equally as impressive. Even if we wait until the third for a RB, there's going to be a nice RB who can make that one cut and run like Gibbs loves. I have a feeling I'm really going to like our draft when it's all over.
