Iowa cornerback Charles Godfrey grew up in Baytown and played at Lee High School. He's 6-0, 207 pounds and expects to run the 40-yard dash in the 4.3s on Tuesday. He hopes to play for his favorite team.
Godfrey is such a big Texans fan that he has their logo tattooed on his right hand.
"That's my team," he said. "I'm from Texas. That's our NFL team.
"I would love to go home and play for the Texans. They have a team that's really on the rise. They've got a great scheme, and I would love to play for them."
Godfrey spent 15 minutes being interviewed by the Texans.
"They talked to me, got some information from me, told me they were interested and said they were looking forward to seeing me perform (Tuesday)," he said.
The Texans indeed are interested in Godfrey.
"I like him," general manager Rick Smith said. "He's fast and physical, and it's a position of need."
Godfrey's older brother, El Roberson, played quarterback at Kansas State.

I read this too. I seriously think (IMO of course) that he has no shot because of other players that will likely be there when we pick. Mendenhall(doubtful), Stewart, DRC, and Phillips come to mind...but hell...who knows really?
I second that...

Thanks for the info. This changes things a lot. If this is Smith's targeted RB then that frees us up to be extremely flexible with our 1st pick. If Godfrey has a strong showing tomorrow then Smith and Kubiak will likely try to snag him with our 3rd round pick. Of course his stock could rise enough if he runs a 4.3 to move him higher, but there are so many studs that have already put up 4.3's and better that Godfrey could definitely be available for us. Smith could also shop our 1st round pick to someone who's more desperate to move up and snag one of the top 4 or 5 backs.
I really hope Godfrey comes out on fire Tuesday because I really like his attitude. He REALLY wants to come here, and I for one would love to see that kind of enthusiasm from our players.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll be watching for his stats tomorrow. :)

1st: Mendenhall/Stewart
3rd: Charles Godfrey?
Let's see his combine, I'm sure we'll have a much more clear look at it then.

If we're going to take a RB early, we've gotta trade down. There are just way too many good RBs available to sit at 18 and take one. If we could get a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (shouldn't be a problem) for #18, I would love to do that!

I just took a look. It looks like a 50/50 chance he will still be sitting there when we come around in the 3rd. It depends if other teams needs.

I would think that they'd want some more experience in the CB position, but since all the top notch CBs are franchised, having good rookie out there might be better than what we currently have.
Charles Godrey sounds like a good pick, a local kid with a lot of love for the organization already, if he has the skills he would be a really good pick.
If he is that gung-ho, which I love by the way, then he just needs to rejct what ever contract he recieves from his drafted team and walk on.
Yes?
1st: Mendenhall/Stewart
3rd: Charles Godfrey?

I could definitely go for that!

he's more of a free safety that can play CB. ive had my eye on him before his stock went soaring. he's a little rough around the edges technique wise, but he is a playmaker. he's probably a mid 2nd rounder. as a CB, he might be the 8th ranked overall. as a safety, maybe 5th after phillips, morgan, smith, and decoud.

Well if he is at our pick in the 3rd round then I say we go for it. I still want Mendenhall at 18.

No he will be long gone by the 3rd, and he may end up being 1st round material after his workouts. Right now, he's an early to mid 2nd rounder.

Yes?
Can't do that. What he could do is get drafted and if he doesn't like it he could sit out this year, never signing a contract and then re-enter the draft next year or sign as a free agent next year but in the meantime the drafting team owns his rights.
God, can you imagine the madness it was like you said. There wouldn't be a draft it would be free agency right out of college for every prospect.

Ok I have recovered from my speculation fatigue and I feel obligated to say something smart on this thread now. ;
I'm obviously not that familiar with this kid so I did some quick reading on him. His most productive season with the Hawkeyes was his junior year when he racked up his hightest tackle #s with 83 total and 61 solos. His production dipped in that category his senior season when he posted only 65 total with 42 solos. Admittedly I didn't watch any Iowa football so I'm not sure why his numbers went down, but he did have his best year for INTS with 5. A plus for Godfrey is that he had some of his better games against some pretty good competition including Michigan St and Ohio St.
Overall that doesn't tell me a whole lot about how his abilities will transition to the pros so I'll be looking for his results tomorrow at the combine. Can you guys that have NFLN keep us informed tomorrow please? I'll have to wait for the vids to be posted to the web site.
I like the sound of this. Godfrey is a local kid. I didn't know it at first but I saw that he went to school at Robert E. Lee, which is very close to here. He loves the Texans and wants to play for us so if Smith likes him then count me in.
......is that better? :o

If we could trade our picks at 18 and 79 to the 49ers for the 29 and 39 then we may be able to land him at 39 and a good Felix Jones and 29. If his stock shoots up a bit then snag him at 29 and Forte at 39. I doubt he makes a push all the way up to 18 though.

In the Q&A section one of the questions was
"What is one thing your team mates dont know about you?"
his answer: " I own 2 pit bulls."
What the heck is it with football players and pit bulls?! i mean i am a dog lover too and i dont see anything inherently wrong with pit bulls, but it seems there is a disproportionately high number of players who own pit bulls. Remember the report of Jerome Mathis' pit bull that got loose in his neighborhood? people were started speculating that he was into dogfighting just b/c of that (however stupid that is). And i know i heard a peporter say not long after the whole Vick thing came out that there were a large number of players that also owned pit bulls but was careful not to imply that there was not any reason to believe that they were all into dog fighting.

Its an image thing, like all celebrities owning annoying football size toy brands that sometimes drive you to want to Matt Turk it and punt thier irritating yipping canine selves.
