18. Houston Texans - CB Aqib Talib, Kansas

Talib is a playmaker and the Texans can use him at either corner or safety.

I don't like this pick. IMO, Go after Mendenhall and get a corner in the 3rd or who knows, pick up Dyson since he got cut, but do not pick a corner or safety in the first.

It's a nice pick, however I like this one much better (http://www.nfldraftdog.com/Mock_Drafts/2008_nfl_mock_draft.htm).

Same here, Mendenhall as well if he slips

Don't we all?

The question would have to be can he come in and contribute right away, IMO. Our defense cannot afford to have a guy starting at CB that has to adjust to the defense but also adjust to the NFL. I don't dislike the pick because it addresses a need but I don't think he is the best player on the board still and I think the pressure for him to perform would be huge.

On the other hand a RB in our system means a young guy that doesn't have to produce right away but can contribute alot.

I would imagine Talib wouldn't start right away. We'd see some Faggins/Hutchins or whatever alongside Bennett, much the same way Bennett was eased into the role..but hopefully without the little injuries that kept him from practicing early.

As far as Mendenhall goes, I really don't think he'll be there when we pick...the guy is crazy-good and likely will be rising up draft boards. Stewart might be there and I wouldn't be opposed to that pick either.

talib cannot play safety. watch the tape on him. he's an average tackler at best and he isnt physical at all. he's limited to a zone scheme as a CB because he lacks the quickness, technique, and footwork to play man. his ballskills are unrivaled, but as a man to man CB, he's not even in the top 10. he said himself he played nearly 70% zone coverage at kansas. while in man-man, he was blown up by jordy nelson and maurice purify, 2 guys who timed in the 4.5's.

Texans need a top corner over a top RB.
There's not going to be anything good at corner in the 3rd round where there will be at running back. Plus we have Ahman Green, Ron Dayne, Darius Walker-three guys who were very productive when healthy this season and Chris Taylor is returning. Take a third rounder who needs a year or two to develop and let him take over when the ahman green stop gap is over.

CB may be a bigger need, but RB is the better value in the 1st round. the depth at both positions is pretty similar, but I'd have to say that depth at RB is weaker because there is a lack of feature backs outside of the 1st round. forte and smith are probably the only guys but they are likely to go in the 2nd.

guys like tyvon branch, orlando scandrick, terrence wheatley, and zach bowman will be there in the 3rd. theyre not top CB's, but they should be able to give us an answer until dunta is healthy and they all have upside.

i think terrell thomas may be a target in the 3rd. he's charles godfrey with less upside, but he can play free safety and a little CB.

anyways, i think there are better options at CB outside of the 1st than there are feature running backs.

I agree completely. With guys like Patrick Lee, Brandon Flowers, Charles Godfrey, Tracy Porter, Terrell Thomas, and DeJuan Tribble, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick the best back in the first (Mendenhall or Stewart) and pick the best CB who falls to our pick in the 3rd. Just like Bennett, only the depth in this draft offers us the hope for an even better prospect.

If he played free safety then he would not need to be as physical as if he was at SS. Free safety plays in zone more often than probably any other DB and is rarely matched up one on one with the #1 WR. With his ball skills as good as you were saying it sounds like he would be very well suited to play free and let the SS support the run with him in the back to watch from center field.

With a 40 time of about 4.48 he doesnt have elite speed but he can get across the field fast enough to make a play and at 6'1'' and with a 38'' vertical jump he can get up to break up nearly any pass. I think he would be fine at FS.
