Whats up people, good to be back, aint been on since 04,
anyway, with Okams size, (6"4-345) and quickness and power,
am I the only one that thinks this is our run stopper? our Pat Williams our 2 gapper,or even OUR Haynesworth as far as size and athletic ability, call me crazy
but I think he will en up starting by week 5 if sooner next to okoye.

I think he will be good but Travis wont give up that spot too easily. Travis had a good year last year and hopefully will build on that.

we ranked 19th in the league in rush yards allowed per game 27th in average
yards per rush, 4.4. I belive with a truly big man on the front will tie up blockers and be 15 and 15 on both stats with okam. jmho

He's going to be a good rotational player but I don't see him takeing over TJ spot. Remember he played really well last year too.

yeah, TJ played well, last year, but he has to come up big again this year or
it might be different, WAR Texans D LINE whoever plays!

I have to agree that Frank "the Tank" Okam will eventually become the perfect fit next to Amobi

I really think we are working on a line where there really isn't clear cut starters as much as total 4 man rotations to keep them all fresh and ready. I think Starters and situational alike will see alot of playing time this year.

with all the buzz going around Frank, and Slaton and Brown making names for themselves, this is turning out to be a pretty good draft for one that is rated as an 'F' grade by certain "experts"

NBT
05-12-2008, 11:42 AM
So what. They gave us an 'F' when we took Mario #1. I don't put any emphasis on what those ignorant eastern establishment sports writers say.

By the way, they called Frank the "nightmare" Okam at UT!

After minicamp Kubiak commented: “We’re impressed with him,” Kubiak said. “I mean, he’s a very big man. He’s 345 pounds. You normally don’t find guys that size that are athletic, too, and he’s got a lot of ability. He’s very smart, so he picked up what we’re doing real quick. Local kid, so it’s very exciting for him to be playing in the state of Texas. We’re counting on him. Travis’s wedding was his gain.”

Makes me think Okam will see some playing time.

So I forgot where I read this, but I do remember Mario putting in some great comments on Okam's ability in minicamp so far as well.

I know but he's no longer there and I think what we want him to do here is more closer to being a tank...when you look at it having a tank coming at you is a nightmare!

if he anywhere near albert "fat albert" haynesworth, i am estatic!. haynesworth was a big problem for houston last year. that guy is a monster and if okam is drawing comparison to fat albert, then i am elated. go texans!

They actually had some Texans coverage on the Austin sports last night. Okam was talked about in a good way...I think he and Studdard could help bring Austin around to the Houston Texans like it should be.

I hope for nothing but the best from those two.

Okam is going to rotate out with TJ. Because both are more rotational type guys. That said, imagine if on a 1st down you put Okoye and Williams at the DE spots and TJ and Okam up the middle.........good luck running on that, and if your not running.......throw the ball real, real soon.

If would be nice to have another city backing the Texans. It would even make a ton of sense that Austin is a Texans city as San Antonio is a Cowboys city........and we all know Austin and SA are rival cities already.

It would be cool to see the Governers cup played for at a neutral site like DKR or Kyle field or even the Alamodome. I think it would benefit both the Texans and the Cowboys.

It isn't important that he starts or comes off the bench since we will rely on situational packages in our front-7...he will be in goal line, short yardage and probably limited to a certain amount of snaps per game like most over sized run stopper types. If you play them too much they get winded and lose some of their effectiveness.

i really just think it's great that we finally have a mountain of a man to clog the middle up...maybe it's time to return some of the punishment we've gotten from tennessee and jacksonville with this big beast of a DT

thank you, we ALL learned this year that not DEF wins championships, D LINE, and I think you are with me on this, having a big big dt, it will affect the other teams running, not just a big dt , but athletic as well, so i have the most confidense in him than any other rookie

I like this formation on 3rd downs. Honestly I never thought of it.

One thing I've noticed on just about every Texan fan this year is that we're not counting on Weaver to have a good year. The man played hurt most of last year. He's healthy now and not only that, he's lost some weight to help Mario on pass-rushing the quarterback. I think he's gonna be great this season.

NBT

You have more confidence in Anthony Weaver than i do. His production has steadily declined the last several years. As for T.J. and Okam at DT, and Mario and Amobi at DE on 3rd downs, that might just be the reason the Texans didn't panic and go after the RDE in the Draft.

Coach
05-13-2008, 01:28 PM
the most important thing of defense is to have a deep d-line that can rotate in and out regulary...having okam gives us a great 3-man rotation at DT with him, okoye, and TJ...if maddox can continue to develop it will be a good 4-man rotation...at DE we're a little softer...we have williams and weaver as starters...i'm not real high on weaver...i think he makes for a great run stuffing DE but as a pass rusher he leaves a lot to be desired...cochran is a guy who i am eager to see how his progression and development are going...kalu is a good solid defender but i still would like to have a nice young speed rusher to add to this unit

Your right defense doesn't win championships, offense doesn't win championships...........at the end of the day it is the team with the most OVERALL BALANCED team.

Yeah the Giants D man some huge plays...but they didn't score many points....if the O didn't score they would have still lost. If the O scored but the D didn't stop the Pats they would have lost.

Again the best OVERALL team wins.

I don't think Okam and Weaver (and Chaun Thompson) being in the mix on the DL (even if Okam is only a DT) rules out that the Texans won't still keep an eye open for another guy to play at the RDE in certain situations. If they don't see anyone they like at their preferred price, then they'll go with what we've got. But I think they're stilll looking.

Okam has enough quickness at his size to get after the quarterback in early down situations, so if he brings it like we're all hoping, that's an added dimension.

We have to remember this... Kubiak never sticks with his starters the whole game, he always rotates... Okam is good against the run so by guess, he will be in against the run... By the way... have we signed any of the rookies yet???

It will happen within the the four weeks prior to training camp with Brown probably within the last week.

looks like my prediction is goin good :D (ota day 6) Kub

(on DT Frank Okam) “There’s a chance for this kid to play very early for our team. He’s got a big body. I think he has kind of played the game with his size being an advantage to everything he’s done, but we also think he’s got some athletic tools to work with movement-wise, so we are trying to add to his game from that standpoint. But he’s a guy that could help this team very, very early. I think we all know that, so we are trying to push him along(kub)

(on if he has lost weight practicing in the heat) “Oh, my gosh. You know, Austin’s hot, but this is definitely humid here, and I’ve dropped about five pounds here (in the last couple of weeks).”

(on his current weight) “I’m at 330.”

(on what his desired playing weight) “I may try to get down to 325, but when you want to be a big guy in the middle, the weight doesn’t hurt too much unless you’re just sloppy with it, and I’m going to try to not be sloppy.”

(on if it will be easy to drop five pounds in training camp) “Yeah, that’s what I hear. Everyone keeps telling me that.”

(on his biggest goal as a rookie) “With so many guys out here, I think, as a rookie, the most important thing is to try to make the team. And once you do that, you try to help out. They brought me in here to try to help stop the run, so that’s something I’m definitely focusing on and making sure I can help the team with. And then anything after that would be an added bonus.”(frank)

Okam will definitely see some playing time, and will eventually start over TJ maybe even by mid-season. TJ is fallling behind a bit and is going to have to work pretty hard to get back into the swing of things, and I don't think working extra hard was ever his specialty.

Okam has much better size than TJ, much more raw ability and much more potential, but like they say, potential basically means you're not good enough yet. Okam will be the steal of this draft looking back.

I think some folks get confused by trying to make it a TJ/Okam thing. IMO, the issue with TJ is that he is basically the same player that Amobie is (TJ NOT = Amobie) from what position they need to be playing. Okam is the run stuffer while Amobie and TJ are penitrator types. They all serve their purpose. I look for Amobie and Okam in on downs 1 & 2 depending on distance, with TJ replacing Okam on 3rd, but it will depend on where they are at in the game and who might need a rest.

I wouldn't count out Dominque Barber either. He has the bloodlines. I'm sure he will be a tough cut.

If Barber is half the player his brother is, while he might not start this year, we will definately make the squad and might take the field if there are a couple of injuries or he just goes nuts.

I think Barber is going to be the steal of this draft. He's a very intelligent player with great tackling ability. (around 100 his final collegiate season) I think he'll be starting by mid-season.
