View Full Version : Travis Johnson misses Mimi Camp

As I understand, Travis Johnson was the only player not to show up for the non manditory mini camp. His excuse was that he was getting married. How lame to plan your wedding during minicamp so you don't have to work out. He could have planned the wedding anytime.
I thought he was trying to make an effort last year before he got hurt. This deal with his wedding is the last straw.
DUMP TRAVIS JOHNSON NOW!

now I dont have a quote....this was from last year and anyone who reads this site daily then they will remember...Kubs had a talk with him i guess before training camp and told him he has to make progress basically tellin him this is it, well he played better last year but....when stuff like this happens, it makes kub wanna work okam harder, or even every other dt. our rep over here as texans are 100%, we may have losing records but name a guy on our team compaired to other teams that has really not been a true pro, team man, not slander the team, not many. props to the Texans
real be real fake be fake, let the best players stack the STARTING d line.

If thats the case why not get married in the middle of the season?
yes I am married, and if all of my teammates were at work I would be there. I would also plan a wedding that some of my teammates might attend. The timing of this is very telling.
Okam gets reps
With Travis Johnson missing all of minicamp because of his wedding, rookie defensive tackle Frank Okam saw a significant amount of repetitions over the past three days.
Ideally, Okam will move into the team's eight-man rotation on the defensive line, giving the Texans a big body in the middle to shut down the run.
"We're impressed with him," coach Gary Kubiak said. "I mean, he's a very big man. He's 345 pounds. You normally don't find guys that size that are athletic, too, and he's got a lot of ability. He's very smart, so he picked up what we're doing real quick. Local kid (University of Texas), so it's very exciting for him to be playing in the state of Texas. We're counting on him. Travis' wedding was (Okam's) gain. He got a lot of reps."

I don't believe he even missed the whole mini camp. I don't have a problem with this at all. They probably scheduled the Wedding a long time ago, way before the mini camp was even scheduled. If anything you should be happy for the man because getting married takes a lot of maturity. You are overreacting.
Edit: I guess he did miss all of mini camp, but still, no big deal. It's freaking mini camp.

I think the real key here is that they got a much closer look at Okam than they might have otherwise. If they end up having a close battle for the starting job this may tip the scales.
I suspect though, that TJ did check with the coaches at some point to see if it would be a major problem if he did miss camp.

For the cash these guys make, I'd be willing to bet his wife would have made him attend if it were a big deal. Also, the talk I had heard was that this mini camp wasn't even schedueled this early untill right around draft time. I'd bet my money that Travis is 100% in the clear with the front office / coaching staff. Besides, issues like getting married, or other non illeagle personal activities aren't any of our buisness. It basicaly comes down to that you have no buisness calling for a guys head when you have no insite to the details of the situation.

this is what I was saying earlier this week. You some of you people need to make up your minds on how you feel about Travis Johnson. you don;t want to trade him to Miami for Jason Taylor, as one poster suggested and got blasted for it, but you want to cut him for missing a "voluntary" mini camp to get married? oooooookay.....
annnnnnd Travis Johnson being a 4 year Vet has no significants what so ever, huh? Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't this a voluntary 3 day mini camp? Wedding are also planned in a years advance. I am not taking up for Johnson nor condemning him to the FA market but if a 3 day mini camp makes or breaks Travis Johnson as a starter or even a player of the Houston Texans, then the Texans already had their minds made up about him anyway. I am quite sure he talked with Kubaik and the other coaches and explained the situation but the last thing I as a REAL Texans fan am going to do is blast a Texans player for missing a voluntary mini camp to get married. If this was OTA's, which I bet is a lot more important than this mini camp, or training camp, that would be a different story. Mini Camp is mainly for the Rookies to meet the Vets and get their feet wet.
This story is nothing....

Kubes stated several times he moved mini camp up so the new coaches could go to work early. TJ had already planned the wedding. Case closed.

Marrige is a good thing. We should be happy for TJ. Should TJ shows up at TC in shape of last year, I have no problem with it. Marriage usually give a person since of responsibility to take care of his familiy and so on and can effect a person's life to become more mature human being.

Some people will never give TJ the benefit of the doubt. He could give them 100 bucks and they'd complain that he didn't give them 101.
The guy just got married. Be happy for him and lay off the guy for missing 3 days of non-contact drills that he's been through 1000's of times before.

Quite frankly, they both will get premium minutes on the field. More than likely they will have a 4 man rotation with TJ, Okoye, Okam and Maddox in the middle anyway so yes, this thread is bogus and if the 2 cats that started this thread had any clue into what the Texans were all about, they would already know this is a non-issue....
Noobs will never understand the way of the Kubiak's force if they don't open their minds and rid themselves of bitterness.....
NOt to mention TJ can play both DT positions and play LDE. as he did play both in college.

I agree this thread should be killed. This is all rather pathetic. The man got married, the bride picked the date, the 3 day camp was moved up, etc. This is no biggie! I happen to like Johnson and the attitude he brings to the field. And believe it or not, he would not be easily replaced at the level he is playing at.

I 100% agree with you on this lets just dump Travis Johnson, This is the last straw. He gives this team so much bad publicity and has never produced. The guy will probably never be a starter in this league again after all this. and and and and . . .. .. OK I can't do this with a straight face. While TJ may not have some great character he has shown some improvement from last year. As far as a wedding, I spent over $10,000 on mine and it wasn't even a big wedding. I can only imagine what someone with alot more money than me's wedding would cost. Imagine spending $40,000 on a wedding and then being told that "voluntary" practices have been moved up to the date of your wedding and if you try to move your wedding you're out 40K. I would go to the coaches and explain my plight too. Hey Kubes I wasn't aware that the camp was going to be moved up this year and had previous plans to get married on this date and paid alot of money to do so. Kubes probably understood fully and probably jacked with him and will continue to jack with him.

Yall are completely overblowing this... I am sorry but he is our best interior defensive linemen as of now. Last year I saw him play with a whole lot of heart and intensity and constantly make big plays.
Missing minicamp to get married I believe is ok. He wasn't doing a record deal or filming a movie or just felt like he didn't wanna go, he was getting married. An like someone mentioned before, yall obviously aren't married if you think that there was no way to avoid this.

Nope, I have a wife and 2 kids and my money has to go to more important things in life, such as food, clothes and a mortgage. Like I said, it must be nice for mommy and daddy to have enough money to get you those nice tickets. Besides I have a better seat than you do and my beer is F.R.E.E. and I don't have to stand in line to go to the bathroom. Maybe someday, when I pull enough freelance jobs, which won't be hard, I can set some aside for season tickets when my son is old enough. Till then I will enjoy watching the game with him in the confines of my own living room....
Oh and ust because you have never missed a home game does not mean you know crap about the team or what the team is trying to do. I don't own season tickets but I would be wiling to bet yours I have forgotten more football and knowledge of this team than your entire knowledge of since their inception. Your comment and starting this thread about Travis Johnson already proves that...
Hey Honk let's not start stereo typing season ticket holders, I have upperdeck seats, and with food and drinks, tailgaiting, tickets and parking I spend maybe $1800 a year for my wife and I, I realize that is not chicken feed but there is a pretty diverse socio-economic level to whom go to Texans games.
How is your beer FREE, can I come to your house for away games if I say bring chicken wings?
dbruder44
05-16-2008, 01:23 PM
I agree with your points, I don't have HDTV so tell your father in law to bring some extra beers for me. You like spicy wings right?

I agree at home you get replays and slow mo's but nothing beats live sports.

I'll get off my soap box, I am sure folks don't like to read pages of rants. Just kinda erks me when folks always try and see the worst in things when people work their tails off to be good. Like the ol saying goes, there will only be a hand full of people to congratulate you when you succeed in a room full of people who want to see you fail...that is the nature of the beast I guess....
Yeah a two year old has no place at Reliant (noise, too long etc), although you see a ton of little kids, the older ones just run around and hit concession stands all game, my girls will be lucky if they ever get Daddy's tickets. Your not on a soap box, I drilled the same guy for picking on bass fisherman earlier, he edited his post and took it out. He is a classless guy

As for Mr. Johnson;
Off-field troubles occurred prior to the 2003 season, as he was arrested in April and charged with sexual assault of a female student

He must interview well at the NFL Combine, according to Nawrocki, to prove any potential character issues are behind him. Not all scouts are convinced he is worthy of a first-round pick,

1 sack in his career!
Both Travis Johnson and Jason Babin were drafted in the first round and neither have really set this team on fire, just yet. I believe both will get a chance under Kubiak's regime to find their game and style and really make a difference, but it's yet more first round picks that haven't panned-out that has really hurt the Texans and set the team back even further from being truly competitive and making the playoffs.
http://blogs.chron.com/fanblogtexans/2007/05/jason_babintravis_johnson_time.htmlWhy
Better skills than Babin, less class
He has a reputation of being a showoff.
During his pro workout before the 2005 draft, he often screamed like a maniac and did anything he could to draw more attention to himself.
A member of Florida State's shotput team accused him of raping her during his senior season.
After knocking Dolphins quarterback Trent Green unconscious, he celebrated and taunted Green while Green was motionless on the ground.
He was ejected from the game and was chewed out severely by Texans coach Gary Kubiak.
He was named Keith Olbermann's 'Worst Person In the NFL' after he refused to apologize for the incident.
During the post-game press conference, he said, 'God don't like ugly. You know what I mean?' (No, we don't)

and my favorite:
have to say I was mortified/embarrassed by Travis Johnson's on field antics and post game interview. It was completely classless for him to stand over Trent Green's motionless body and taunt him. His comments after the game, "Fu@% Trent Green..." were even worse. I say to Travis Johnson: "FU@% YOU, Travis. You are an embarrassment to your team and city, and do not deserve to wear the Texans' uniform."

I don't have anything against the man and wish him well. I would wish that no harm come to him or his family and I hope he has success with another team. IMO he is an under producer for the money and a rotation of Okeye, Okam, Maddox, and Zgonina or Robinson will be OK. The team would be better off trading for a player who will give it their all ( hopefully a fast DE) or a draft choice.
I'm proud of the fact that this team puts such importance on the quality of someones character. Mr. Johnson chose to miss non mandorty pratice. Please provide me the link that says Kubes "did not care" or that it was "OK" that he was the only player on the team that did not show up. All I heard Kubes say was that "Johnson loss was Okam gain".Please provide a link showing when the final date for pratices was posted.
Q. Would Demeco Ryans have made the pratices if he was in the same situation?
I think he would have scheduled it at a time he was sure it could not conflict with his job. Something tells me Demeco would have taken the financial hit to be with his teammate.
I find it interesting that many of you would not change your wedding date to protect your job that will pay you $700k. I think his attitude is arogant. EVERY PLAYER ACCEPT HIM WAS THERE!
As a fan however, if he does stay I'll be rooting for him at the games to help the TEAM win.
I think you just proved the other guy's point. Babin was traded last year. You really need to get a life!

As for Mr. Johnson;
Off-field troubles occurred prior to the 2003 season, as he was arrested in April and charged with sexual assault of a female student

TJ is another Casserly SBD fart. I personally take offence to him skipping out on mini-camp. What kind of message does that send to his team and the fans? That I'm getting married, who CARES?!?!?! I DONT.
TJ you are becoming another wasted 1st round pick. Luckily for you, we need the depth you provide on the DL. I'm tired of reading stories about you doing something stupid and causing controversy for the fans and this team.
Pull your head out of your ***** and start acting like a *pro*. Think of the experience you could have shared in helping the newbies out.
In my *opinion* you had plenty of time to take care of personal biz in the off-season.

I was qutoing from a piece from 2 years ago. Check link! It did not say Babin was currently on team. Calm down

I can't understand why anyone can fault Travis Johnson for missing a week long mini-camp because he is getting married. Thankfully, the Texan's coaching staff is a bit more understanding than some of the members of this forum.
I wish Travis Johnson and his new wife the very best! :)
Some have said T.J. needs to show more maturity and take his job and life more seriously. Any of the married members of this forum will agree, if you need a cold shot of reality to slap you in the face nothing can do it like a marriage or the birth of a child!:eek::eek:

I like Travis Johnson. The guy has off the field issue, a nasty streak, and a mouth. He also showed a lot of hussle last year and is a rough player. Good.
Every team needs one guy like Travis Johnson. He is the spice. I'm tired of us being the nice guys of the AFC South. Nice guys finish last. I want to see someone who has a little passion out there. He may be a showboat but he is nothing like a TO or Chad Johnson. None of his off the field issues have ever effected his play.
I am tired of having to be gentlemen in a sport that does not value it. If you want to see gentlemen then go watch the PGA.
I was at the Dolphins game last year and was happy to see him jawing at Green. Green took what I consider to be a cheap shot and paid the price. The kicker was Olberman going after him. That guy has no credibility. I hope he and Travis get to have a nice sit down one day.
So Travis missed voluntary mini camp. If the coaches wanted him there they should have said something. Hopefully this new wife will settle him down.
Travis gives our team the intensity that we are sorely lacking. Every team in our division comes at us with the stated intention of hurting our guys. It is time we play a little dirty. Travis is just the guy.
So Travis missed voluntary mini camp. If the coaches wanted him there they should have said something. Hopefully this new wife will settle him down.
This was a mandatory minicamp (the one allowed per the CBA). The upcoming OTAs are voluntary (along with the off-season workout program) but with this team, voluntary means 'you really need to be there.'
Kubiak made it sound as if there was a recent change in schedule to run minicamp prior to OTAs so TJ may have had a legit excuse.
