This IMO is firmly a development year. This year is the year Matt Schaub gets comfortable with whats around him gets used to the play-books and the demands of being an NFL starter. People are also worried about Spencer not being ready. I say let him sit out another year. Whats the point bringing him back into the fold when hes clearly not 100%? I'd rather wait another year to be sure he is healthy enough to be playing football. Also with him rested it can give someone else the chance to prove they are worth a permanent starting place on this team.
As they say Rome wasn't built in a day and this football team is firmly a work in progress. Yes I can gather many of us may be impatient due to the lack of success this franchise has achieved since opening its doors in 2002, but good things come to those who wait and I firmly believe a year down the line this will be a definite play-off contender, with Spencer healthy, Schaub settled in and hopefully a stud WR drafted to complement AJ. Not to mention the young team we have a year maturer.

The NFL is goofy these days how fast a team can turn things around in a big way from year to year. Look at the Bears and Saints from last yr. Throw in injuries and blown calls and anything can happen. In this league there is a fine line between 10-6 and 6-10. This is the one time I can be lollypop eyed from drinking battle red cool-aid. Don't spoil my buzz.

Try telling that to Cardinals, Lions, and Saints fans. The Saints just actually accomplished something to be proud of, and the Cards and Lions are still waiting for anything good to come their way.

Apples and oranges. The Bears had been on the rise since they hired Lovie Smith in 2004 and even then they were just 3 yrs from a 13-3 season in 2001. And the Saints have been a decent team every since they fired Ditka and hired Jim Haslett in 2000 - they went 10-6 that year. Every year since they've been 7-9 or better - and they could have been better not for the drama which divided the clubhouse. The 2005 Katrina year was an abberation.
But I agree with one thing you pointed out. We were probably 3-4 plays away from being 8-8 last year. So anything can happen. ....if you're prepared to take advantage of the goofyness.

I'm with you. We're starting Year Two of our recovery period from the three C's. The good news is we now have a smart, solid front office and a produce-or-be-gone coaching staff which has resulted in the best squad, top to bottom, we've probably ever had. The not-so-good news is, this is probably the toughest schedule we've ever had. We have five games against 2006 playoff teams. Six more against teams that were "in the hunt" until late in the year.
We may well improve as a team but the record might not show it. With a bit of luck I'm thinking we can make 9-7 or 10-6, maybe better. But 7-9 or 8-8 may be more realistic. And if that happens, I'm afraid some of the fans who were overly intoxicated by the effects of the kool-ade may join with the disgruntled ones who still are pissed that VY or RB aren't here (trust me, they're still around) and call for the heads of all involved.

So I agree, this year we turn a few heads, maybe make our first winning season. But next year we take control of the division. For sure.

I gotta funny feeling we will be in a yr or 2 where they wish they were. Those teams were wishing they were where the Oilers were yrs. ago and are still @ the bottom. But this quote being from Zagen its probably sarcastic anyway and I just got dooped so nevermind.lol

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I think we'll get farther than most of those teams within 2 years as well. I was just commenting on the somewhat blind hope that UK_Texans_Fan was proffessing, as good things don't always come to those who wait. I guess I was somewhat sarcastic.

If you're an AFC team with a losing record, you are going to have a difficult schedule. The AFC is tough and we can't play ourselves (6-10)... Having said that, I agree with most reasonable people on this board- we'll win at least 7 games and I agree with most reasonable optimists- if things go right we could get to 10 or 11 wins. It's July 1st and there is no way to know.
Here's what I'm confident in: Regarding our division, I think we have the second best offense in the division going into the season and we also have the second best defense heading into the season. That belief gives me quite a bit of hope for this year and the future, especially since we are also the youngest team in the NFL.

The texans will not win 10 or 11 games, get your head out of the clouds. That being said were a young and improving football team that is in year 2 of the Kubiak & smith era. I think the texans will go 8-8 with a possibility of a one game swing in either direction.

Either way you slice we must improve this year to land a big FA next year. Free Agents don't want to join a losing team or a developing team. Its either Big money or a championship. So we better atleast make .500 otherwise those big name free agents will pass us by next year.

Don't we have a lot of cap space available next year?

You need to edit your statement with "probably"... You're comical. The Texans "will go 8-8" or they could win 9 games in your estimation... But someone that says it's possible for them to win 10 has their head in the clouds?
We have a second year coaching staff, a promising unknown situation at QB, a lot of 2nd year starters, and have turned over 85% of the roster in less than two years. Last season we improved by 4 games despite starting 5 rookies. We've had a very productive offseason and it's July 1st.
Given all that, it is possible that this team could win 10 games- nobody is suggesting taking that bet with even odds but if someone wants to give me 4 - 1 (and if I was in Nevada), I'd lay some decent money down on it!

Let's see.....6-10 last yr with at least 2 more games we should have won, better QB, better RB, better defense......and 4-1 that we could win 10 games this season? Yeah I'd lay a couple of bills down on that bet.

I'd say probably but then that would suggest to you that we could win 10-11 games this year and I'm telling you we won't do it. And the difference from 9-7 to 10-11 is alot. I'm realistic, and by your logic its possible for the texans to win the superbowl.

Who says we have to sign a big free agent to be successful?
What big money free agent did the Colts bring in to win the Super Bowl?
What we need to do is make good draft picks, retain our good players, and sign inexpensive free agents to fill whatever voids there are.

Since football has such a short life span players go for the money. And thank god the texans will have the money

Well I think that keeping players around for another year and not getting any production out of them is following the path of the old regime. Yeah Spencer showed some quality and effectiveness but that quality and effectiveness are not doing nothing for us right now. If you are saying keep him on the squad even after it is proven his knee isn't getting better, then I have to disagree. His potential should be something that saves him but only if he can prove to atleast contribute on the second team, if you are worried about his injury but he still has to show some contribution to make this team this year.

ah no he doesn't! He makes very little and his upside is tremendous. There is no way that their cutting him anytime soon.
