One of those arguments took place on ESPN Radio this morning, where Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora (No. 42 on the list) was a guest. When asked what about that list surprised him, Umenyiora said, "Mario Williams at No. 6." He then added, "This guy right here at No. 6 is just absolutely ridiculous.

Osi is very good, and I can't disagree that Mario should not be #6, but he does deserve to be in the top 10 defensive players for sure.

It just sounds like someone is hating on Mario. That guy just needs to get over himself and go back to Disney. He has superbowl ring, what is he crying for??
Like the man said, it was written to be a conversation starter, and that's all it's good for. If it got Osi started, it was getting it's job done. nothing more, nothing less.:D

osi is a great defensive end, but there is no way he is better than mario williams. it takes more than just sacks to make a great DE. osi dsnt play the run like mario does. as far as i am concerned, a lot of osi's success came as a result of playing opposite michael strahan. just imagine if mario played opposite strahan last year! he woulda had 30+ sacks. strahan took all the double teams and that left osi one on one most of the time. on the flip side, mario had to fight through double teams to get his sacks and he still topped osi. as a matter of fact, 6 of osi's 13 sacks came in one game, against philly, and against one guy...second year left tackle...cnnt remember his name. nothing taken away from osi, but mario is a better player...period!

If it wasn't for Winston Justice, how many sacks would Osi have had? Exactly, Osi needs to learn that just because they went to the Superbowl doesn't make him the best DE in the league.

How can you think that you are better,He had 1 more sack, better against the run.Was picked #1 first overall because of his abnormal physical tools and was our only pass rush. How many sacks would Mario have if he played Osi's spot on that line,25.Shows the unneccessary cockiness of sports players.Won the Superbowl, went to the pro-bowl,played in London this year but thats not enough though.I have to smash players I don't know on public radio to make me look good in the moment.Please...

He is just mad because Mario is the new age DE. I was looking at his career stats and he is sitting in a good spot on the list. yes he won a SB, but there is much talent around him. Stop Hatin OSI. Oh yea and Mario has played in every game even when injured.

It will be funny if Mario doesn't say a word and just tears up the field this year.
I hope after every sack he holds his finger to his mouth. That could be his trademark. :)

I could care less about someone crying about Mario being number 6......poor baby....maybe he needs some cheese with his whine....
I think the ranking is based on more than sacks....I think it includes pressures and hurries.......
In my own opinion, I think pressures and hurries are just as important as sacks....If you can cause that QB to have to throw a pass that is incomplete, that is just as good as a sack. You are causing a disruption to his timing and you are getting in his head too.
If you thought last year was good for Mario....just wait.....it is going to be getting better......
How Mario can be rated higher than DeMeco draws that list immediately into question but the media loves them sack stats. Mario is a good player and I'm happy that he's getting the pub - in part because he's earned it but also because it's vindication from the onslaught two years ago. I guess some in the media want to repent for all the Sam Bowie comparisons.
But it's almost like the pendulum is swinging too far the other way. He's not the 6th best player in the league. There's a strong case to be made that he's only the 3rd best player on his own team.
Mario's the kind of player that seems to need a rally point so in a way, I'm glad he's in the news in this regard. Maybe the nay-saying from a peer about his position on this list will help his hula vision. Whatever it takes.

this is osi six year in the league and this is gonna be williams 3rd...already tied him for number of sacks in a season, and will pass him undoubtibly on sack totals.
Through tow year osi had 8 williams has 18.5. hmmmm wonder why he is jealous?

Okay with all the factors that involve The Giants and their D-Line..
they have a very aggressive defensive scheme.. then when you combine that with the back that Osi is playing with strahan and justin tuck there is no way he shouldnt have gotten to the qb more times than what he did this year..
you bring a system like that to houston and put a vicious presence other the other side of mario (ie colvin) and you'll see who's talkin crap then..

Osi took 6 years to get where Mario did in two.
He's had two good seasons out of six. The other four...pretty mediocre. Elvis Dumerville is way more of a sack machine than Osi.

I think you're spot on. We will get a feel for how accurate that list is in regards to the Texans players on it as this season progresses. If Mario plays the entire season like he did the second half of last season, IMO he deserves to be listed amongst the leagues elite. But I think it is a little premature to put him that high up based on one season. Don't get me wrong, I think he will play up to that level, but it's just silly journalism to put a guy that high up who simply hasn't spent enough time in the league to prove his consistency.

This subject got some attention on NFL Access on NFL network as well. Jamie Dukes brought it up during his special segment. Although I believe that number 6 best player in the whole league is a bit much, I still got P.O’d at both Osi and Dukes because it seems that when comes to any Houston Texan, they usually get the cold shoulder. Dukes then went on to talk about how some say that Bush and Young are possible busts, but that both of them got their teams to the playoffs while Mario was at home, that comment made me P.O’d even more. It seems clear that for many people the whole Mario, Bush and Young controversy won’t be over until the end of this season when Mario tears it up and leads us to our first super bowl win!!! (Wishful thinking).

That is crazy because I JUST saw that video and immediately came over here to see if anyone saw it as well. While I agree about Williams maybe being a little too high, I wanted to kick Duke's *** for even remotely trying to say that Bush and Young "led" their teams to the playoffs and became huge impact players. Young really did nothing for the Titans from what I have seen and Bush had 2 great plays in the playoffs and everyone is claiming him to be the savior.
Mario if you're reading this, you better be over the top mad at these people and make it a priority to blow up EVERY QB you face this year.

After reading this article I have to say that this whole post is silly. It would be like having Chad Johnson talk about how he is a better player than AJ simply because his ego tells him he is the best player ever.
Our players do their talking on the field and that is what I love about the Texans! AJ and Mario are major forces in the NFL, but they do not run around with "Look at me" attitudes.
THE SEASON NEEDS TO HURRY UP AND GET HERE!

I don't know if you guys remember this or not it was discussed a while back about Osi's comment below saying Mario Being so high was ridiculous but it's not over.
http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10932553
There's a feud brewing, even though they play the same position on two teams in two different divisions who won't meet this season.
Williams plays a mean, nasty game on the field, but off it he's laid back and getting him to say anything inflammatory is almost as hard as blocking him. But when Umenyiora's name was brought up, that all changed. Gone was his mild way, replaced by anger that was genuine.
That's because Umenyiora publicly knocked Williams this summer after my CBS Sports.com rankings of the Top 50 players came out. Williams was sixth on that list, opening a lot of eyes, including those of the 42nd-ranked Umenyiora.
Asked on a national radio show what surprised him about my list, Umenyiora said, "Mario Williams at No. 6." He then added, "This guy right here at No. 6 is just absolutely ridiculous."
What bothered Williams most about the comments, which came this summer, is that he saw Umenyiora a couple of days before he made them, and the Giants defensive end said nothing to him about it.
He only shook his hand.
"He's a coward," Williams said. "If he has anything to say to me, he should have said it to my face. You write that."
Great Article all around!!

I nearly spit out my water when I saw what Williams said. I never would have thought Mario would be the one to say that. You know one thing with that statement though. That for him to do that means he REALLY got tired of people always doubting him. Mario, if I were you, I'd make sure it isn't a penalty to murder a QB on the field. Don't need you being suspended or fined for tearing Manning in half. :D
