Adam Caplan from Scout.com / BattleRedNation.com reports:

The Carolina Panthers claimed former Houston Texans OL Charles Spencer off of waivers today. Spencer was noted on the transaction wire failing Houston's team physical on Tuesday. However, it's believed he'll be able to participate in Carolina's training camp which begins on Friday.

Good for Charles, I wish him the best, it appears he and our scheme were not a match and he would never ever play like we need. Going to the NFC, means we only see him every 4 years. Won't come back to bite us. hey maybe he help the Panthers beat some AFC teams for us.

Good for him. Probably could have played in this offense pre-injury, but now he is likely only going to be able to play in a power scheme. It will be interesting to see if in the next year or two if he wins a starting gig. Hope he does, he is a good guy that got a horribly bad break with the injury.

One more thing to chew on: Spencer has two years left on his deal but he can void the final year with 35% playing time.

Really hope this guy makes a comeback and tears it up for the Panthers over the next few years.

Panthers claim OT Spencer, release OL Riley
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers claimed tackle Charles Spencer off waivers from Houston and released offensive lineman Rueben Riley.

Spencer hasn't played in the NFL since breaking his leg during his rookie season in 2006. The former third-round pick provides more beef up front for Carolina. Spencer is 6-foot-4 and 337 pounds.

That didn't take long! Swap out a practice squad guy for a hurt starter... and Spencer if well will fit right in! Good for him... bad for New Orleans!

I love how in the other thread it was brought up that in order to get to the playoffs we need to have enough talent that when we let players go the end up starting for other teams. I think Spencer has the ability to start in the league, we just could not afford to keep paying him with a wait and see mentality when we need to start moving forward.

Also, just like the other spencer thread, many people seemed to think he will make it back... with another team.

Hate to see him go, but it is a part of the business and I hope he succeeds with the Panthers even though our fetal position mitten QB did not work out.

I hated hearing about him getting released but I am glad another team picked him up so quickly.

Good for Charles, I hope 'Big Nasty' comes back with an avengence that makes us all wonder if letting him go was the correct thing.

Im glad to see B.N. get picked up,too. He should have an impact w/ carolina due to their power-run game. He fits better in that role than he would in the zone-blocking scheme we are using. Just to play a "What if" scenario. What if Spencer was healthy & a starter for us the last 2yrs & we still brought in Gibbs to install zone-blocking, do yall think Spencer could have flourished in it. I personally think he would've struggled due to his massive size & weight. I dont remember how mobile/agile he was but knowing Gibbs like athletic lineman, Spencer would have been in a bad situation.

Stewart is going to go down for a few weeks during the season and the Panthers will sign Dayne to 1 year...End of story.

I think if he was at 100% health over the off-season, then there would have at least been a chance that he could have gotten his weight down to make himself a better fit. The way he was, he couldn't even practice effectively, much less put the hard work in to get his weight way down.

I liked Spencer and am glad to see that he got picked up by another team. I am hoping that he can come back from his injury and have a good NFL career as long as our o-line flourishes as well...I am a little puzzled though why Carolina picked him up. I thought Carolina was going to a more true zone-blocking scheme as well, or at least I think I remember reading that prior to the draft. With them picking up Spencer and drafting Otah that they are going to a more physical running style. Who knows. Best of luck to Spencer, and best of luck to the new look Texans o-line!!!

I wish Charles Spencer all the best. I also think he just wasn't a good fit in coach Gibbs ZBS.

I really wish Spencer all the best with his future NFL career. As several have stated and as for myself I always felt he would be an early cut since he does not fit the typical ZBS scheme.
