Peter King insults Texan fans. Demand an apology. Or maybe actual non-superficial writing about the team.

All right, that anticipates my follow up: are there any teams whose fans don’t think you hate them?

The fans of the Houston Texans are not passionate. The fans of the Arizona Cardinals are not passionate. I mean, I came out here this morning, and all you see are people who are just NUTTY about the Redskins. They’re out of their minds. They’re crazy.

So I guess King wants us to hate him to prove our passion.

This is what I wrote about this at the I'm a Texans Club (http://www.imatexan.com/profiles/Texans_Chick/profile_blogs.asp?post_id=175): (more links in the original post)

In The Redskins Blog (http://theredskinsblog.com/2008/07/25/at-the-park-today-talking-to-peter-king/#more-233), Peter King makes this observation about Texans fans:

"The fans of the Houston Texans are not passionate. The fans of the Arizona Cardinals are not passionate. I mean, I came out here this morning, and all you see are people who are just NUTTY about the Redskins. They're out of their minds. They're crazy."

Lemme see. The Texans have sold out all their games since their existence, sell more season tickets than the Cowboys and already have some of the best tailgating in the league despite existing less than a decade. King is ill-served picking a fight with a fanbase who derives part of its passion from having football stolen from then and then restored by a miracle.

He wants to hear crazy from Texans? Not sure that is advisable but... come and take it. You don't mess with Texas, and you shouldn't mess with Texans fans.

Given what I know about the passion of Texan fans, he is speaking from ignorance. Ignorance of the facts, of course, is non-surprising from the typical national NFL columnist who has likely not bother to spend a Starbucks-sipping amount of time finding out anything of substance about our team.

If you read his quote in context, I believe he confuses passion for your team with being ill-mannered. In my opinion, Houston is the friendliest large city in America, but we are a prideful bunch, and we don't take insults lightly.

If he believes that expressing personal attacks vulgarities is important to demonstrate passion when responding to the typical stupid superficial things that national writers say about the Texans, I suppose people could do that. Personally, it is not my style.

But people show their passion for their team in different ways. I ask you please to email Peter King (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/07/27/favre.camp.deadline/index.html)and tell him what you think about his opinion in whatever way you feel comfortable. Show him pictures of your Texans stuff, your tattoos, tell him stories, invite him to your tailgates, give him a piece of your mind--show your passion. Please do it now, before you forget about it.

Here's the link (http://theredskinsblog.com/2008/07/25/at-the-park-today-talking-to-peter-king/#more-233) where he was quoted that you can reference his quote in your email Let me know if you hear back from him.

So, he thinks that hating him = passion for your team. If he actually said something maybe even relevant about our team ever instead of talking about how he likes his coffee, well then, maybe we would tear him a new one.

Please take a moment to email him and let him know about your passion for your team.

Sadly he has drescribed a very large number of Texans fans, those are the ones that miss kickoff, or the 50+ thousand who left early when we came back from a 29 point deficit against the Titans. Don't get me wrong this is slowly changing but to compare us to a Philly or Washington(we are not in that league YET) Thye have 100 year plus waiting lists for tickets. I am a crazy fan, missed 3 home games in their existence, never missed on TV.

I was raised in Phoenix never a Cardinal fan but went to 2 or 3 games a year, simliar actions just no where near a sell out.

Lets not go crazy and read more into what he said, lets channel our energy in the direction of becoming a more passionate group.

You just described yourself as a crazy Texan fan. Peter King generalized the entire fanbase, including you, saying that you aren't passionate about your football team.

I was out at practice on Saturday. There were so many fans I don't know where they could have put any more.

I think Keith Weiland, formerly of HoustonProFootball and now at IntheBullseye.com (a place you need to visit if you don't already) said it perfectly (http://www.inthebullseye.com/archive/2008/20080727.html). (Go to the original link because it has all the funny links in it).

I Think I Think Peter King Hates Us
by Keith Weiland

Really, Peter King? Texans fans are not passionate about their team? Really.

Texans fans hail from the great football state of Texas. No, we don’t care much for girls field hockey and lattes here. We care for Friday Night Lights and the church of pigskin. We worship at the temple of football, and our temple is named Reliant Stadium.

We’ve kept the faith, jamming the pews game after game, even after five years of Mr. Mittens under center. Carolina couldn’t hang with us on that one, Peter King.

Don’t mistake the ineffectiveness of an expansion team with your perceived apathy of a informed, sophisticated fan base. Houston fans haven’t had a playoff team in fifteen years, yet there will be more than 70,000 fanatics in attendance at our home opener thinking this is finally the year.

Out of our minds? Nope. It will be our year.

In fact, Texans fans deserve bonus points for going at this with such passion a second time around. We were once jilted by the NFL, Peter King, and we still get no respect from national media blowhards for standing up to an over-zealous owner wearing a possum on his head. Yet here we are again, at the altar of professional football, praying on Sundays, keeping the faith. Now that’s “NUTTY”. Just ask Los Angeles. And what’s more, that’s better than just passion, that’s resilience fueled by passion.

I’m a Texan, Peter King, and you’re not, so don’t knock what you don’t understand. Texans fans have suffered like no other NFL fan before them, and we’re still here, as indestructible as ever. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, and the great fans of the Houston Texans are as strong as they come.

Absolute genius. That's what I'm talking about.

If we let national writers get away with making stupid generalized statements about our fanbase, they will keep jacking with us. We are Texans and Texans take * from nobody.

Here's the email (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/07/27/favre.camp.deadline/index.html) link to get in touch with him. Probably won't change his mind or get him to apologize, but he might think twice the next time he thinks about messing with Texas.

You don't have to say much. You just need to speak from your heart about your Texans. What it means to you to have your team.

Keith is great.

Email sent. Kept it firm and stern, not name callish or vulgar. Just let him know, like Keith, that I know passionate football fans, and I know Texans, and he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Like I said, I know who Peter King was talking about (not me), I have too much pride to let a writer from New Jersey get to me, but he was and is on-point. Have you ever noticed they only announce paid attendance, not gate attendance, they difference would be staggerring, the 600 Grid IRon Texas where I and many die hards sit is always full, the cheap seats if you will, but look at the 300's at Kickoff. The year we went 2-14 technically we were sold out but I garuntee you there were games that less than 50K attended and that was only for part of the game. Other NFL cities everyone is in their seat before kickoff and nobody leaves til its over, until we get there we are what he called us. Sorry all, I am as dedicated as they come, but I can't say that his story was that much of a hatchet job, and I appreciate those who disagree.

I hate to say it but Peter King is not far off base about our fans. I think the passion will become more noticeable when we start making regular runs in the playoffs. I do think we have some of the best tailgating in the league though.

OK, look around these message boards. Do these people who haven't seen over .500 football with our team lack passion? He generalized to our entire fanbase and probably hasn't spent much time here at all other than for that Super Bowl.

If you want to see real football passion, come to Reliant. Actually, come for the Monday night game vs. the Jaguars. I think you will be surprised.

By the way, I see that you will be visiting the Jaguars training camp this month. Please let me know if they have to use tarps to cover the empty seats there too. Thanks!

You can either put your stones in escrow or you can stand up for the team you believe in.

Here is my e-mail to him:

This is not a question, rather a retort to your ridiculous comment that Texans fans are not passionate. Where do you get your information? The reporters at BSPN? Have you been to a Texan Game or Training Camp? I have, I am a loyal Texans season ticket holder. We went to TC this past Saturday, they give out 2,500 tickets to each public practice. Guess what it was standing room only. These fans down here are the MOST passionate fans you could ever meet. You need to come to a game at Reliant, actually come early and enjoy our hospitality in what is no doubt the greatest TAILGTING in the NFL. Come opening day or if that is already booked Come Dec. 1 for our showdown for the playoffs on Monday night aginst the Jags. Really I think you should retract your statement because you could'nt possibly be any farther from the truth.
