Disregarding Chris Brown's injury, which running back is the best fit for the Texans?

Ahman. When healthy he's got the experience to get it done.

They are all good but I will throw my hat in with Walker because he impressed me last season. Wasn't a speed freak but he seemed like he had a couple a smart runs.

This is what I noticed to! He made smart cuts and moved the chains. There were a few plays last year where he seemed to really hit his stride. I guess we will have to see how TC pans out, but I am glad to see that people are verbally supporting Walker now.
I think I am still leaning toward Ahman if he stays healthy, but I am interested in seeing what Bell brings to camp.

I'm not gonna lie, I really like Steve Slaton. I'm just waiting for him to get some experience in the NFL and I think he'll be a great RB.
Voted Green strictly for the veteran experince he brings to the table.Everyone including Green still has to earn the spot and convince the coaches they are the right man for the job.

I'm going with Walker, because he his young and has more long term potential than Green. It seems like when Kubes finally suited him up for a game last year, the light game on in Walker's head. He has made the most of his opportunities. THe kid makes smart reads and hits the hole with authority. I'm loving what I've seen out of him so far.

I'm going with Walker. He really showed me something last year. And this is a really good problem to have guys, I mean, we have 6 capable nfl backs. Thats **** good

I like the pickup and will go with Bell. Don't trust Green or Browns ability to stay healthy. Slaton and Taylor are unproven but full of potential. I am looking forward to seeing more of Walker but Bell has great size, experience in the system, he's young, and has illustrated that he is capable of success.
It's nice to have so many to choose from but it's frustrating to have this question mark. Hopefully, at some point there will be no question as to who our best is. It would be great to see a Texan RB be one of the best in the NFL.

I've been out to 3 camp sessions. From those limited observations, Walker and Green looked the best between the tackles. I know Green will be kept if healthy so I voted for Walker.
Walker seemed to get the most out of following his blocking and sensing the right time to make his cut. But once he gets clear of the pack, there's no take-it-to-the-house gear he can shift into.
Slaton has the most breakaway speed but any halfway decent lick takes him off his feet. He'll be best on tosses or swing passes that get him into space.
Green can both run between the tackles and has enough burst to getaway from LBs once he gets thru the pile.
Even before Brown's back started acting up, he looked slow. Not Ron Dayne slow but slower than the other guys. On the plus side, he is bigger and ran stronger than the other guys too. I see why he gets hurt, he never makes anyone miss. He's strong enough to run thru some tackles but not durable enough to make it thru a full season (looks like not even a full TC).
Taylor is a slightly smaller, but slightly faster, version of Chris Taylor. Given that he's playing tailback, learning fullback, and was working out on S/Ts (both as KR and on kickoff teams) its a wonder the guy can walk back to the showers after practice. It would be a shame if he got cut because he's done everything they've asked.
Bell..??? I'll see Saturday morning.

AHMAN GREEN....gota lot to prove to texans this year. i wanted CHRIS BROWN to be the man. things just never seem to go right with injuries. Bell is gona help alot.... he already knows the system.....and we got WALKER bitin at the bit, ready for anything. we will do fine....way better than last year :D

I picked Brown although his balky back doesn't really make me confident in his abilities. I'd prefer our RB crew to be Walker, Slaton and Mike Bell honestly...they're the ones that have some sort of future in the league. Ahman has a nice past in the NFL.

I agree, Walker has been getting great reviews from Kubes. If that keeps up, he will make the roster.
I voted for Ahman with my fingers crossed. Brown better get his butt on the field so we can tell if he is the right one or not. Right now NOT! Darius is a little fireplug but don't think he could take the pounding of being #1. Taylor, I liked before he got hurt, but I have not seen enough of him this TC to make any kind of an opinion. Slaton is the new kid on the block, so it will take him a little time. If I had to cut somebody right now, it would be Brown simply because he can't stay off the training table. Mr. "Glassman" living up to his billing.

Just curious, why would you name the thread Bell vs. Brown when you have a poll with all of our RBs in it? Neither Bell nor Brown is even winning.

I'm suprised noone has brought this up before now, but to clear that up, I originally wanted to start a poll: Brown vs. Bell ONLY. In the middle of creating this poll, I decided to throw in all the backs. IMO it makes for better discussion.

I have to say that what I saw of Green in three practices did not look impressive he seemed a little sluggish not as sluggish as the great Ron Dayne but sluggish none the less. Also I would say that Slayton looks really quick but he seems to be a little small for what I think Kubiak wants from a feature back. So from what I saw I would say the Slayton, Taylor and Walker are our best backs right now. As for Bell I really didnt see him much but from what Kubiak is saying it seems he is out of shape and Kubes doesn't like that very much.

I really don't see anything wrong with Slaton's "size". He could bulk up if he wanted to...He was listed a little over 5'9". Keep in mind though, LT is 5'10". So Slaton is maybe 1/4" - 3/4" shorter than LT. Does that really make that big of a difference? If Slaton gets experience, I'm sure he can be a featured back.

GreenBay was trying to implement zone blocking, when Green was let go. He followed his head coach to Houston, who was trying to implement something other than the ZBS.
I don't know too much about how Ahman Green fits into the system. I think he is the best amoung our bunch of inexperienced, when healthy backfield.
Chris Brown has been running the ZBS, since college, & what they ran in Tennessee isn't that far from a zone running game. He's probably got the most experience in the system, and he's pretty productive when healthy. I voted for Bell, but after thinking about it, Chris Brown may be the best fit.
I was very impressed with Mike Bell, his rookie season. But Denver is so screwed up, I don't really know what to believe. I could see us dropping Ahman Green, and going with Brown, Bell, Taylor, Slaton. Or even signing Bell as a fullback, to back up Vonta.
I like Chris Taylor. If any of our RBs look like Terrell Davis, it's Chris Taylor. I'd like to see him get a real chance to show us what he can do.
Steve Slaton.... I think he's our future. I can't wait to see him on the field.

Size in the NFL, is a ratio of height & weight. Is he short and stout, or is he just tiny. Warrick Dunn & Dante Hall tiny... lucky to be alive after that hit Tiny.
Steve Slaton is in the NFL, because of his speed, and his ability in the open field. Add a little weight, and you have to wonder if he'll be the same guy.
5'9 187lbs.... That's Steve Slaton
5'10" 220lbs..... LT
5'11" 220lbs....... Clinton Portis
5'11" 213lbs.....Tatum Bell
5'10" 208lbs........... Julius Jones
5'9" 187lbs......... Warrick Dunn
At 5'7" 208lbs..... Maurice Jones-Drew is huge compared to Steve Slaton.

Big difference. Thanks for the post.

Errrr...UHHHH! I think I know what you meant but you didn't say it very well. Slaton is 5'9", 197, not all that much difference between he and Maurice Jones-Drew. I think what you meant to say is Jones-Drew has about the same size and speed, BUT his legs are so much thicker he can absorb the NFL punishment better. Now that is a huge difference. What Slaton needs to do in the offseason is bulk up his legs as much as possible so he doesn't fall down with the first hit.

No, not what I meant at all.
#1, Jones Drew is a power runner, so those big legs are his strength. If your plans were to turn Slaton into a power runner, you never should have picked him.
#2, Jones Drew is 2" shorter, 20 pounds heavier. If Slaton is actually 197... then he's smallish, and it's not really as big a concern. But 5'9" 187lbs.... that's a kid on the field with some big men, and he's probably going to get hurt.
Here's the scenario, you're confronted by two guys. They'll agree to let you go your way, if you can beat up one of the two. One guy is 6'3" 165lbs. The other guy is 5'9" 220lbs..... that's all you know about the two, which one looks like the easier fight??
Which one looks more frail??

IIRC, when Slaton weighed in for camp he was at 207 lbs. According to the Chronical he worked hard in the offseason and put on some weight. I had actually heard he was 210, but the camp weight was recorded as 207.

This was a tough one. Out of all of the RBs on our current roster, Walker is the only one we've seen produce on the field in our current scheme. Well, some of our scheme. Once Kubiak decided to dump the power running effort last season and shifted back to a zone mentality we started seeing more production, and Walker had his fair share of good runs. The talk in camp is that he looks pretty good and is improving his overall game.
Still, I had to go with Green simply because of the experience. He's always had the quickness, speed, and vision to play in any system so there's no reason to believe he won't have success under Gibbs if he stays healthy. Watch his highlight film and you'll see that Ahman has always been a one-cut back that hits the hole full speed and hits another gear once he's got daylight.
Coach K says he looks healthy and he's ready to go so my vote goes for Green.
